Endermen used to be something to be feared, hated, and in awe of.
They used to be our equals.
They used to take our blocks, then backhand us for even thinking of taking them back.
They used to be the bully of the sandbox.
What happened to them?
I want Endermen to be back to the way they were in the 1.8 pre-releases. Difficulty be damned, if I don't crap my pants every time I accidentally glance at them, they aren't doing their job right.
They're one of the two key ingredients for entering the End, and yet getting to the Nether and fighting off waves of Blazes is more of a challenge than fighting one or even two Endermen.
Perhaps spawn them in groups of two, and use the idea of them whispering.
Look at them, and they both stop their whispering and stare at you, then look away and they're on the hunt.
Perhaps remove grass, dirt, sand, and stone from the list of blocks they can pick up, so that they're more of a threat to our creations (As a side note, make them drop the block they're carrying too.)
Perhaps make them run away with their ill-gotten goods once you notice they have a block, or have their attack animation incorporate them smashing you over the head with it.
Well, would you rather have a balanced, yet still difficult mob that is startling, somewhat scary mob? Or would you rather have an overpowered, heart-attack-inducing, almost impossible mob?
And there's your answer.
I agree completely. The Endermen were based off something that was supposed to instantly instill fear in event he bravest of souls, yet I only find them to be a slight annoyance. What happened to the fear-inducing creatures of darkness that Notch promised?

I DEMAND HEART ATTACK INDUCING! I never play survival anymore because the fear aspect is gone, and because of that it has gotten quite boring for me. I want that I-just-crapped-my-pants feeling when I first played the game, when I first entered a cave, and when I was first ambushed by mobs.

You're forgetting that little kids also play this. I doubt Mojang wants to be sued because some obese kid accidentally looks at an Endermen. Hell, I don't even want to look at an Endermen as described like this; I'd die before I even got one hit in. It'd also ruin my landscape, which unlike you weird people, I enjoy to look at. If mobs pose too much of a threat to creations by the player, it screws up the creativity aspect of the game. That's why Endermen's blocks were reduced*.
Just add cobble to the list of blocks they can take, and make them teleport if damaged no matter if you've looked at them or not (they don't teleport if you hit them while wearing a pumpkin or if you hit them on the legs, which I think is rather silly and makes them an easy opponent), and voila, they're fixed.

Make them something to be feared, and respected.
Go and read this http://notch.tumblr.com/post/8208212863/the-psychology-of-the-reticle-and-the-feeling-of and then tell me if the Endermen currently fit what Notch had in mind.

*Speculation on my part. Most logical conclusion.
