You have to ignore the outliers. Pistons in Minecraft are not really like anything in real life, and jukeboxes are just for fun, not a real part of the game like guns would be.
The fact that those "outliers" exist is enough to prove that it is not medieval. The whole "ignore the outliers" argument is an excuse. As I mentioned above, I don't want a gun because it would be obsolete to the bow; I merely am saying that the whole "setting of Minecraft" thing is completely unproven.
And, even if you wish to view it as medieval despite the obvious advanced technologies that disprove it, the first firearms were created by the Chinese in 700 AD. The middle ages lasted until about 1400 (someone correct me here).

Seriously, this game is like, No technology, no advanced stuff (excluding stuff like juke boces and stuff) and nothing that new. This game is like surviving in the wild. Would you know how to make a gun in the wild?
I probably would have a hard time figuring out juke boxes in the wild as well. And enchanting tables. And how to shape diamond tools/armor with my bare hands. All a basic gun is is just a long, hollow tube with some gunpowder in 1 end, load a projectile, then light the powder and it fires.

Little range? How? So it just despawns in mid air? I guess to make it less overpowered you could lower fire rate and make the part where you reload it take some time then you wouldn't move but this still doesn't belong in minecraft.

well its easier to make a gun rather than making a portal to hell or magical potions that make you immune to lava. a musket is a very simple item.

Gun is too much power for minecraft, we already can soot longer distances with the bow.
Let's be a little bit more creative in this aspect.
The OP never said how much damage he intended his gun to have, so you can't claim it's too powerful until he specifies that variable. And a gun IS slightly more creative than something like a crossbow, which is just a bow with some wood stuck on it and a trigger. A musket/whatever low-tech firearm you prefer actually looks a little different than the bow.

ill give a bit more detail to the gun. i would want the gun to have around 2-3 hearts damage with no armor and the range could be 40-60 block range. this gun should also be hard to craft becuase... well its a gun. it should also have some knockback, maybe 1-2 block back. and the reload time should be 2-3 seconds. to shoot it needs something steel and gun powder. this is also a good idea because gunpowder doesn't have enough ways to use it in minecraft.

40-60 block might be pushing it. And 2-3 seconds is roughly the firing rate of the bow. So at this point it's like a more expensive bow with more range? If a new weapon of any type should be added, it ought to have a unique mechanic to it as opposed to simple +/- stat changes.
MAYBE new ranged/melee weapons could be aesthetic reskins, but then again the bow and sword do all we need.
Well, I didn't mean terrible as in outright garbage. A bit of hyperbole. I mean he hardly explained his suggeston.
Ah, in which case you are very correct.

well it has a bit more to it than stat changes. A musket requires 2 things (gunpowder and a steel bullet). a bow only needs arrows. and its different because with the bow it takes time to pull the string back but with the gun it just instantly shoots at the click of your mouse. and the speed of the bullet should be more then the speed of the arrow when shooting a bow and arrow.

So, here is the current list of stats we have for the musket:
1. Ammo is more expensive (and of course the weapon itself).
2. Doesn't have "warmup" delay before first shot, but after that it handles about the same (as the reload time is about the same as the bow's charge up time).
3. Longer range.
4. Faster projectile.
5. Slightly less damage than the bow (fully charged bow is 4.5, you proposed 2-3 for the musket).
It doesn't seem overpowered, and it would probably be kinda useful as a sort of "sniper" weapon or to fire a softening-up shot at close range and move in to finish it off with melee. Even then, however, it's not that great. It's okay, but only the greatest and most revolutionary things should be added to the game, like pistons. The bow is overall just simpler to use, really.

well i didn't state that ammo is more expensive then the gun. maybe one gunpowder could supply the gun for about 5 shots. and when making the pattern for a steel ball in the crafting table it would give you maybe 6 rounds. The gun would also have 50 or 75 uses until it breaks.

I should have worded my response a little differently; I wasn't trying to say that the ammo of the gun would cost more than the gun itself, I was saying that it would cost more to make the bullets for a gun than arrows for a bow, and also that crafting the musket itself would cost more than crafting a simple bow. And you could probably up the amount of uses a little. Bows have 385, for reference.

yeah the requirements for the gun and the gun itself is more expensive then the bow and arrows. Well, yeah your right, id maybe set it at about 125 or 150 because after all with every advantage comes a disadvantage. and the guns flaw would be the amount of uses and the expense of using it.
If its magic, it isn;t hard. And the portal is just a lighter and obsidian stacked together. And whats a musket?
It isn't about "physical" difficulty so much as "mental" difficulty. In other words, how would Steve figure out that arranging volcanic glass in a giant hollow rectangle and then lighting it on fire would teleport him to a hell-like dimension? He must be a very creative thinker.
As for the musket, he could maybe have been messing around with a metal tube of some kind and a Creeper came along. It blew itself up and let's say Steve had a rock or something in the tube at the time. Steve watched in amazement as the rock flew out of the tube and sought to replicate the phenomena using gunpowder.
Or if that seems too random and rigged, he could just find it in a dungeon chest and mess around with it until he figures out how the heck it works.

If I tried to build a makeshift record player and messed up it probably wouldn't blow up when I tried to use it.
Also, where in actual record players are diamonds used?

It could theoretically be used as part of the laser-lens required to read the disc you put into it. But that's assuming a present-day disc drive, and this is probably much more old-fashioned and thus the diamond would be useless.
