Ok, well, my one wish right now. But it's one that I couldn't let just slide without posting about.
First, though, an introduction (this being my first post here): I've been playing Minecraft for a little while now....ever since it was posted at Jay Is Games and I was made aware of it. Imagine my surprise! A simple but deceptively complex open-ended game? It immediately pulled me in. I've been lurking here ever since then.
No, I haven't purchased the full game yet. I have a pretty good reason, although it's only going to hold up so far: I mostly play at work. I know it's unethical, but I run GIS mapping programs and when you run a script that takes several hours to run, there is only so much other work you can do. I get very bored and Minecraft (among other online games) keeps me awake. But I'm not only running on outdated Java (which causes crashes) that I'm not allowed to upgrade, but our Information Services department regularly blocks sites that eat too much bandwidth so I'm worried that at any moment they'll cut Minecraft and I'd be out $15. But as I said, that argument won't hold forever. I'm already tempted to just do it on the basis of supporting Notch, but I'm of the mindset that money I spend needs to provide me with something, and the Survival Mode isn't my cup of tea; I'm a Creative player and I'm not even going to try Multiplayer at work.
Ugh, sorry. I do feel the need to explain a little too much on new sites. On to my suggestion:
Edited Maps in Single Player
That's all.
OMEN seems to be a great tool, but to require a server to use the maps made by it is a big letdown. Not only can I not host servers at work, but playing a multiplayer game surely will push bandwidth beyond what they'd like.
Aside from my own selfish problems, I'm sure it'd be a welcome inclusion.
- A number of threads I've seen have inquired as to whether this option is possible, but all have been turned away disappointed or helped with hacked maps (which I know the powers-that-be around here don't aprove of).
- Some of the videos I've watched around here seem to have those flat maps with players almost competing for space (I won't even get in to griefing), and I'm one of those players that derives more fun from the casual fun of just creating something by myself and sharing it when complete. I'm sure I'm not the only one who enjoys this way of playing.
- [EDIT] - Sorry, I forgot about this one: It's the Creative Mode, right? It seems silly that a segment of players can't be as creative in single player as they can in multiplayer. Not that it's anyone's fault, it just seems like the perfect reason to allow edited maps.[/EDIT]
As alternatives to the above (which I would asume would require Java to have to read the file that the editors create without the sever software), I have two options which would also serve the basic same result:
1) Allow multiplayer maps to be saved as single player maps to be played later. This would be very useful for backing up a great creation that you made in multiplayer and want to keep for singleplayer, but more directly it would allow people to make the edited map they want (flat land, all water, higher heights, custom landforms, etc.) and then bring it into the single player without much fuss.
2) Have options in the single player to adjust the "random" generation of new maps.
- Map Size
- Map Height
- % Water (surface)
- % Trees
- Variable settings
---Average land height
---Likelyhood for cliffs
---Likelyhood for caves
---Tunnels vs. large caverns
-Preset settings
---Flat Grass
---All water (to adminium bottom)
---All land/cave (to max height)
-etc.
Any of the above (the main wish or either alternative) would probably tip me over and get me to purchase the full version....but that's not saying much since I'll probably buy it the next time Creative Mode is updated anyways.:smile.gif:
Anyways, that's all. Feel free to comment and discuss. And please, if I've missed anything which makes this post incredibly stupid, let me know. Thanks.
This is what I get for not refreshing my search today. Thanks, Danneh! That tool would certainly do the trick.
Although, as great as clients are, it'd still be nice the function as part of Minecraft itself. Maybe I'm just being silly. It's not like OMEN or any other editor is part of Minecraft. Thanks again!
