well, i was playing minecraft thinking of survival and weapons, when i thought of entrenched, it could be a game where there are 'destructible' bricks, that form a trench of a sort, that teams try to destroy, like WW1 trenches, and there would be a 'no mans land' made of dirt. the basis of the idea is WW1 though, so yeah, just an idea....

Hello there. I made a mod that adds a block that breaks into other stuff.
I kind of like the idea of two teams going at each other on a mostly-flat plane, trenches snaking vaguely toward each other, with the occasional head popping up to fire an arrow. Maybe mortars...
Bonus points if you manage to route lava into the enemy's trench. >:^)

And suddenly, the first thing that comes to my mind is ye olde days of Infiniminer. Digging through rock to get somewhere, all of a sudden, HEY LOOK, LAVA. Then a desperate run back through the tunnel you made as the lava chases you down.
Anyways. Something like this could actually be rather interesting for a Deathmatch sort of mode. Though the trenches would have to be, for the most part, premade in the map, as otherwise, people would probably just spend their time shooting each other with arrows, and would likely not even think of digging trenches.
Hm, this has gotten me thinking. Maybe scrap the arrows, and make it more of a 2D affair.
Say you have a map that 256x256x2. That is, two blocks high (or maybe four), and the ceiling and floor beyond that are admin blocks. That's about the extent of my idea.
I guess one goal might be to navigate your way to the rear of the the opposing team's tunnels (or preferably to an unoccupied area of them), plant a 'magma bomb' (basically a block that spawns magma). Then run like Hell, and close off your own tunnel.
Or maybe the sides of the map would be all-magma, and your team would spawn at a random location?
So far, I see lot of conceptual problems, these would have to be banged out by the modders that chose to create this gametype.
For instance, using the current Minecraft setup/hud both teams would just be digging around blindly, as there's no map system.
