It'd be cool to have the ability to like create a referee NPC guy that you could tell to set up a game like a shooter. For instance, you could cobble together a solid shooter map, make the referee, tell him you want a free-for-all shooter game, drop some spawn points and guns, tell people the game's starting, and start the game. People who want to join the game just talk to the referee.
This is what it'd look like...
A few of my friends on a server. Instead of making another sky castle or griefing another house we decide we want to put together a capture the flag shooter arena. We find a big enough mountain, hollow a lot of it out, and set up two bases with stuff in between. I make a referee NPC. I tell him I want to set up a two team capture the flag shooter game. He says OK and drops a bunch of red and blue team flags and spawn points. We also ask him for a few pistols, two shotguns, and a rocket launcher. We pick the stuff up and set them up on the map.
We're ready to play. I shout in world chat that we're starting a CTF game near the huge red flag. We're going to go ahead and start, though. I tell the ref to start. I pick red team, the two other guys go blue, I get teleported to a red team spawn point. I'm wearing all red and can pick up weapons that hurt blue team guys.
Other people in the world see us running around shooting at each so they go up to the ref and ask him about the game that's going on. They pick teams and jump in the game. In a little bit the whole server is playing the game.
After the game's up we talk about what parts of the map sucked and how we hate where the rocket launcher was. We take a minute to clean up the map and make it bigger. We add a few more weapons and put the rocket launcher closer to the center of the map. We tell the ref we're ready to start. It's now an 8 on 8 game.
Minecraft is an incredible community sandbox. It's crazy seeing that amount of user created content happen in real time. I'm a big fan of the collaboration that goes on too. When exploring the worlds Minecraft can feel a lot like an ambient platformer like Knytt Stories. It can be very exploratory. Sometimes the platforming can be challenging too. The fact that world is rapidly being created by a ton of people makes the world feel real.
While the pure sandbox attracts a lot of people Minecraft could become way more popular if you could inject some actual game to it. It shouldn't be game the server is just set up with though. Imposing a ton of rules to servers would go against the spirit of Minecraft. It'd be much more interesting to give players the ability to set up their own games around the terrain they created.
Here's a cool feature: Players can carry achievements that they pick up when they win other player's games.
Some more possible game types and player made games:
* Collect the star at the top of my tower without building blocks
* Find the 4 relics I put in my mob infested maze
* Find and kill the boss in the lava cavern. A team of 4 recommended.
OK. That's not a feature. Kind of a project direction haha. If you ever make the project open source or anything I do write Java professionally ;-)
This will be possible with Lua, assuming Notch adds guns, and/or the ability to shoot.
It'd be possible with the API if it were robust but I think the idea with the Lua API is that the first pass will just let you programatically make blocks and move them and stuff like that. Achievements and a referee NPC would prolly have to be baked in the game
Does anyone else think it'd be awesome if you could play a shooter in a Minecraft map??
Though I'd prefer it to have some kind of more interesting twist to it than simply being 'in a Minecraft map'.
I mean, you have this whole robust editing system... it would be easy, I imagine, to make a mod that allows a simple 'shooter in a Minecraft map' kind of thing going on, everyone being able to edit blocks fairly freely as well as shoot at other people. Setting up barricades would be awesome! Maybe need a cooldown after a few blocks so you can't just bury yourself or tear the terrain TOTALLY apart.
Er. What I'm getting at here is that though the referee sounds like it might be interesting, it also sounds kind of superfluous.

sence it seems(to me) notch wants this at least under Teen instead of real guns...*drumroll*..............................................WATER GUNZ!!!
I really hope this is implanted. And different guns should do different damage to the different types of terrain.
EG] A pistol destroys planks after a few shots, but does almost nothing to stone, but rocket launchers blow apart a certain area of stone. If they implant fire, then a flame thrower that burns all wood types and cloth, but nothing to stone. If you really want to get into detail then maybe different time periods of weapons and a nuke that devastates the battlefield. Maybe you could ride a horse... and so on, but I don't think it's possible the after the flame thrower, and even that is stretching it. But it would be awesome if that happens.

It's never gonna be under teen for online play anyways, cause of griefers creating swastikas/ huge "**** yous" on the maps...
Exactly what I thought. you can't stop neo-nazi's from spamming "**** JEWS JEWS SUCK" (not my opinion) in the chat, no matter how many filters you put in. ("FU<k J3ws, j3ws suck")
And yes, I do want FPS capability. (but that will probably have to come with a remodel of the player skins (with elbow joints), I can't see one of those holding a gun properly.
This idea bears a striking resemblance to Zoid battles, where the referee would drop into any landscape imaginable from a satellite, set the boundaries, gametype, and rules, then begin the Zoid battle.

Just edit the bow to not have the arrows go down, add some new models and you're done.
Doable with Lua. <-- Standard awnser. :biggrin.gif:
And also, I don't think you could do it.

Quality of output = Skill * Effort
I already have over 9000 "shooter" maps.
