A problem I see is the idea of bosses you are discussing.
1. I believe that bosses should reside in dungeons and guard loot like in the aether mod. 2. If you have a dragon you will have to kill to get to another dimension I think 3. it will focus too much on the fighting side, not on the mining side which is the point of the portal system.
If you want to make dimension access hard just make the required blocks hard too get.
I am not saying no to bosses, I am just saying having them in dungeons guarding a reward is better. Or of course you could summon them in a way. Say you get 20 nether eyes following you and a Lava dragon will come up from the depths to attack you.
4. Just don't make bosses necessary.
Also, maybe a dungeon where a boss fires blocks at you to knock you into lava and you have to mine them would be fun
1. no, those are mini bosses, main bosses are like the enderdragon, in that they have a health bar and are required to defeat to obtain an important item. (in this case the dragon egg)
2. the only dragon boss there will be is the ender dragon, having all the bosses be dragons would be boring and redundent.
3. we are only talking about the 5 MAIN dimensions, there will most likely be other, "side dimensions" that do not have a boss in them, and reqiure special items to access via portal or some other way.
4. technically they aren't, in survival, you probably won't have to fight the bosses, it would be optional. In the upcoming adventure mode however...
I was wondering whether I could start doing some ideas and idea collection for improving the nether.
I could post edited posts and they could be put up on the top page while others can do the same for other dimensions.
As a result we can at least get a good idea pack for the nether.
Maybe in the ruins, the rooms with the 1 square lava pit, there will be a portal and it teleports you to the top of the map(on top of the bedrock) and you fight a boss there and after you're done you exit through a portal just like how the end works.
I think that a good idea is that 1. in each dimension you get a rare ruin with a portal that leads to a boss area of that dimension.
The Over-world has the end.
The nether can have a huge enclosed cavern.
The Aether a platform surrounded by cloud banks.
So-on.
2. All portals to these dimensions will be floor based (like end portal) while the ones people create to larger dimensions will be like the nether portal.
In each 3. side dimension there will be the boss that you have to defeat to get a ton of experience and a trophy item (aka. the dragon egg) and the portals into these will be in a large dungeon. Aka: stronghold, sky castle, Atlantis structure etc.
The reason: I think adding the end for just a boss fight was good as it meant that no huge areas of world had to be carved up with the risks of random world generation fail. It also means when you get there there is no sidetracking.
I think this allows people to play into dimensions and choose when they want to face a boss.
In simple it fits everyone, mainly as people probably don't want to battle a boss to get t the Aether like they don't 4. for the nether.
1. This is what I had in mind for a while. I mean, it's not like you would just sort of find the boss randomly in the dimension, that would be wierd. Gonna add this to the OP as soon as I get home
2. Boss portals = static, dimension protals Non-static? Would make things simpler, and you could still tier dimensions by having the dimension portals be made from something from the previous dimension. You could also be able to have multiple portals to each dimension in the overworld.
3. These should be optional mini bosses instead.
Also, in case you didn't understand what I meant by "side dimensions", "side demensions" are not boss dimensions, they are dimensions that are seperate from the "Main Dimensions" and are entirely optional. The Main dimensions are the dimensions that have the boss portals within them. For example, the overworld and the nether are main dimensions.
4. The nether will most likely be the first dimension (other than the overworld) that you go to.
You will have to defeat a boss to get to the aether. Bosses could be optional in survival, but in adventure mode they shouldn't be

Unfortunately, what you describe is the void, there will be no boss fights in the void(it would be a pain to code).
If we can go up there in creative mode couldn't we just use the same process of sorts to get the boss up there?
trust me, it's a lot more complicated than that. You can't place blocks in the void for a reason, it's a pysical hieght barrier in the nether, and should remain as so.
And besides, it wouldn't make a good boss arena anyways

The boss would be an entity and the portal would destroy some bedrock to put it there and since bedrock is a thick layer you still wouldn't be able to enter throught the bottom.
I think it would be a great place, any place with tons of space.

Meh, I still think it's a bad idea to put ANYTHING in the void, it was designed to provide limits on how high/low we can go in the game. Using it for anything else is a bad idea IMO
We did have a nether boss sugestion a page or two back, I liked it a lot and actually thought of an arena for it too.
Maybe we could work on creating a concept arena for it instead?

The question is, would you teleport to the arena or just find it in the nether? What I mean is, portal in the nether vs. boss room just being in nether.

It would be as Savannaman stated, it would be a portal, in the nether, to the boss arena. The same way the overworld has a built in "static" portal to The End
This of course, would classify The End, as a boss dimension, and not a main dimension. So I think we should have The End as a dimension, then give the Enderdragon it's own boss dimension within The End.
and then the over world would have it's own boss and boss dimension
By side dimensions I meant boss dimensions. I also think that you should be able to get to the Aether like in the mod, a glow-stone portal activated by water. I also think that to get to the nether boss you would have to get an ingredient from the Aether to get to the nether boss like you have to get an ingredient to the Nether to get to the end. In my view it is just another form of travelling through dimensions.
As for the Boss's I think that a s**t load of XP and a trophy is good thanks to the eternal bragging rights you can receive. I mean on a legit world someone who keeps the dragon egg in his house is sure to be respected.
However I think that for all who defeat a boss like this on legit should get a reward cape and those who did it on hardcore should get a super reward.
I just think you shouldn't have to defeat a boss to get to the next dimension. Simple as.
Also, is it OK if I am the main Nether person, I sent you a message but got no reply.
Sorry for not replying, I was kinda busy.
Anyways, I don't think I'm ready to set up any "leaders of dimensions" yet. Once I get the OP nice and pretty, and have some more support behind me, then maybe.
speaking of which, I'm prepping for a massive OP update in a bit.
In my opinion, the bosses should just be in thir own, easily identifiable arena which you can choose to enter, like in the Aether mod. No need for the excessive scripting and animation design required for portal bocks. More time to be spent on the boss themself.
But oh well.
good point, but then the bosses might be kind of hard to find, not to mention they might even be wandering around the dimension if they fly or something. It would be easier to just have a different dimension to house each boss to prevent any complications (that's why the enderdragon is in the end after all)
also, having a specific dimension for the boss would allow more customized battle grounds to better suite the boss, give it some personality, without the fear of conflicting with the main dimension.
Personally, I thinking tiering dimensions is a bad idea. It makes it so every play through of the game follows the same order, which if you ask me, is an awful idea for a sandbox game. I also think that with new dimensions should come unique portal designs. Now that we have the End portal, reusing the Nether portal shape makes it seem out of place and unoriginal. Some portal designs could be naturally generated collections of blocks, a specific shape out of redstone (or anything you can put on the ground, maybe a special material) with a trigger block in the middle, etc etc. Of course, the suggested method of having End portal shapes being used for boss dimensions and Nether portal shapes being used for main dimensions is a good one, just not my personal preference. An underwater dimension is questionable because with dynamic height and tweaked generation code your as good as set on ocean size.
Also, a little while ago I saw an awesome suggestion for the Nether that was illustrated and included something like hives, hellfire mobs, and nether thorns. Anyone know what I'm talking about and/or have a link?

please check the OP before reading this post, as I just updated it and reference it's content in this post. Please refer to the new "Portals" and "Dimension types" sections in the OP.
1. The tiering is only for the main dimensions, there will be other optional side dimensions that you can access, some early in the game, some require items from the main dimensions.
2. Indeed, this I will make note of, I was thinking that it might get redundant using the same portal design for all of the Non-static portals as well
3. What you describe are "Static" portals and "Semi-static: type 1" portals, as they are naturally generated.
4. There should be many ways to activate portals, this could be one of them!
Cool, thanks I've been looking everywhere for that. Also, by a collection of blocks I meant sort of like the "Time Anomaly" detailed in the JurassiCraft suggestion, just for your information.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Minecraft makes me feel like I'm three. Playing with blocks and afraid of the dark.

1. Your welcome
2. If you can move it then it classifies as a Semi-static portal, if you can't, it's a Static portal
It would be cool to have a portal to the sky dimension with a castle in the air.
Oh, ok
But yes, you did give me an idea!
We should build a rough model of the sky castle, nothing too complex, but to serve the purpose of housing a skylands portal.
