Reviving this thread again: Lily Roots (lily pad seeds)
Since Jeb's been updating farming for the 1.4 update with carrots and potatoes, it's not inconceivable that he could add more growth patterns.
I think that when you destroy a fully grown lily pad, it drops 1 Lily Pad, and 0-3 Lily Roots. You can plant Lily Roots by right clicking on water source block with air (or a transparent block, as with every other air check in the game) above it and a solid block below it. Doing this causes a very small lily pad to appear above the block. Over time, this grows to full size, when you can harvest again.
Of course, bonemeal can be used to grow to full size instantly, for consistency with other plants.
I am going to dig this post up again as a result of my search I just did for this topic. Is there any updates for this yet? Is lily pad farming still not implemented? I guess I should say "do the devs. still have no plans to make this a feature"?
I'm aware they don't seem to be super useful, but I find myself wanting to farm them so I can use them for all of my other plant farms... However, it might be nice if lily pads could have their own usefulness, thus making it worthwhile to farm them... Like obscure potions? maybe have farm animals able to eat them? (or even people I guess)... super light armor? idk.. just some ideas
Wouldn't it be simpler to just duplicate the mechanics for mushroom growth?
Keeping the lily pads from growing in full light would make it impossible for them to grow beyond the shade of the trees and would make farming them easier since it could be done in any biome. If you want to go the whole nine yards, giant lily pads would be pretty darn cool.
so they don't overpower swamps ... it doesn't allow them to take over the world.
I looked up lilies on Google, and apparently it is a real life problem that lilies take over bodies of water. I'd be fine with lilies spreading everywhere, because it feels more realistic. If I want a lily-free body of water, I should have to clear every last lily.
That said, I'm always looking for a different mechanic. We already have grass and mushroom spread, so I would like to see something different for lilies.
For one thing, they seem to require soil at the bottom of the pond, so it might be that lilies can only spread on top of 1- or 2-meter-deep water.
As for what bonemeal can do for you, I don't think it should create extra pads, but one thing I think would be cool is if lily pads could only grow lily flowers by being bonemealed.

I find lily pads especially useful in making industrial sugar cane farms, i think they should be able to grow but not to easily. Maybe only on top of a one deep body of water, or in swamp biomes they should duplicate on their own. It would be extremely useful for lily pads to naturally grow.
I honestly think (own experience having a purdy pond in my backyard) they should grow like they do in reality, like, i get MC isn't really and all BUT maybe with a flower pot you could place them in the bottom of a pool/pond and they could grow from a stem (maybe even lilies :P) and they could be harvested? Jut a thought, but I think it should be like that. It could also add a new flower!
I agree with bonemeal growing a lily pad on adjacent water blocks to the original pad. However, pads shouldn't spread by themseves because they would be invasive. Also, making the pads die under a certain light level wouldn't be necessary if they didn't spread naturally, and this would prevent loss of pads placed to create walkways, etc.
But i would like to see the ability to grow lily pads implimented into the game.
There deffinetly needs to be a way to get more lillys. I only have a small i chunk sized surgar farm, but it gets anoying falling into the water holes.

Subscribiddyyyyyy.

however growing them does not seem like a bad idea
also Lilles don't really have any grand uses so yeah.
Side thought: I would like to see the stems of the lilles
BA
You can get them as a "junk" item from fishing.
