I definitely agree that biome transitions totally suck now. And I agree that the loss of beaches along shorelines visibly degrades the game.

However, I am a builder. In previous versions, clay was not a viable building material. That meant that you had only a couple of options for building materials - wood, stone and sandstone. I don't work with cloth or other materials. Those aren't intended as building materials and they are very easily destroyed.

I like red bricks, and clay is the way to get them. But you might not be aware that having two or three chests full of clay won't get you very far on a large building. Clay compresses down into a quarter of what you are holding when you turn it into single bricks, which you must do before creating BLOCKS of red bricks. By the time you are done, your three chests full of clay amounts to a few stacks of clay brick blocks.

It takes a LOT of clay to make a nice large brick building. And in my towns, I would like to have roughly a third of my structures made from red brick. Even in the 1.0 version I find it difficult to come up with enough clay. Of course, I haven't found an actual swamp yet. That's another reason I don't like the new biome generation. Some biomes aren't there on some maps and some biomes are just too huge and go on forever. My current map in 1.0 has mostly desert, and one of those deserts runs more than 3000 blocks in every direction. It makes for a pretty boring world.

So a big "yes" to bringing back beaches, but a big "no" to reducing the amount of clay in the current generation scheme.

I want old beaches back, but I don't want to lose the now much more abundant clay :sad.gif:

I'll only support bringing back beaches if it's a nude beach.

I didn't notice that beaches are gone. Man, that sucks! And I would like if the underwater bedding is more uniform. It should be either uniformly sand or dirt, with patches of clay here and there. Not this kind of garbage!

Beaches were cool, but the bedding is completely okay to me.

I realize the problem which arises for many like you who do like using brick blocks as a building material. Clay, even with the 1.7 patch to the old x=z bug, was somewhat hard to procure in large amounts with the previous terrain generation. Now, of course, it is relatively easy to find reasonable amounts of clay in a given area, especially in swamp biomes. However I did suggest a solution for the relative lack of clay in my topic, which would be to return the old clay generation but simply increase the frequency of the clay deposits or perhaps increase the amount one can find.

And I do also believe your other point on the size of biomes. It is more realistic to have much larger biomes, but having them smaller as they were before made it more accessible for one to explore and reach a variety of biomes and environment. Nowadays, it seems rather impractical to spend time searching for all of the biomes, as they are often very, very far off.

Every single thing (not even joking -- EVERY single thing) you posted about beaches, underwater circles, and clay were all things I wanted to mention in a beaches topic. You've made probably a much better-looking thread than I could and you explain all the problems thoroughly with images.

Furthermore, to add to the clay suggestion (where clay should spawn on beaches, but more commonly than it was a long time ago when we had beaches), I will add that, yes, clay should spawn only on the sand beaches, however, it should make sure it only spawns at the exact surface level of the water or higher. Mining anything below the surface of the water is buggy in this game and I have a feeling it won't be fixed. So, if you want to test, go in Minecraft now and mine out one of those random circles of clay underwater, and maybe mine out 1 more layer of dirt down underneath that. Now swim up and down in the newly-mined hole. It will try to pull you down underwater, as if it is a waterfall, when it clearly is not a waterfall. (How can a waterfall be underwater?) For this reason I say that clay should only spawn at water level and above.

I agree with everything OP suggested.

Thanks for your feedback, I simply tried to map out all of the problems concerning coastal geology in a clear manner.

As for your idea that clay should spawn on sandy beaches at water level seems like a good and natural idea. Of course, I think in that case, it should have to be fairly common to counter the fact that it would be unable to generate anywhere else. Also, the waterfall thing you have mentioned is something I find rather annoying as well. Unfortunately, that is the result of the current water behavior and physics.

The water behavior can't really be helped because I do believe that they fixed in Beta 1.9 Pre-release 5, then reverting it back to its previous behavior due to complications that arose with source blocks forming when water streamed downward.

I kind of like the ugly blotches in swamps. I think they fit there. I definitely like the increased amount of clay (I'm a sucker for brick houses), but I can see why people want them out of the nice biomes and oceans. The blotches don't fit there. Also I agree that the beaches should return.

I'd like clay to be formed in large areas like gravel, in dirt. I live on clay ground. They used to make bricks before they added a layer of dirt and build houses, but if you dig down half a meter it is clay all the way down.

I don't really like it how there are circular patches of clay and dirt in the water... It's a bit weird to have the terrain generator generate circles in the land. I think it would be better if there were streaks of clay.
