Whenever a player creates a new block of any type, it gives that player ownership of the created block. To check ownership of any block, simply mouse over it in deletion mode and it will display the player's name and maybe even the creation date.
If the block was generated by the server, it will simply not display any ownership whatsoever OR it will give the host of the server ownership over the block.
If there is something I missed (something already like this, a post already like this, etc.) please tell me.
Along with what I have said; make it so players can only place blocks on other players' blocks, not destroy them. Players can only destroy thier own blocks and the server's generated blocks.
If a player decides to spam another player's structure by putting random blocks all over it, the Block Ownership kicks in and the spammer can be caught. Admins are the only ones that can destroy other players' blocks.
I like this idea would help cut down the griefing population by alot, they dont want to go to the trouble of laying blocks to much effort rather than just destroying.
This will double the map file size, it's not a good idea IMO. Minecraft is a sandbox, we're supposed to be able to build what we like where we like, if you limit blocks to specific users that'll just reduce the functionality of the game.
There should be a kind of ownership, but have it so the/an admin(s) can toggle it on and off to certain people, making it so their blocks can only be removed by them (until they leave the server ofc) and admins (maybe OPs too?)
This game needs block protection, with the perfect solution being server owners adding people they trust to protection lists, so griefers don't go boxing **** up. A server can't go one night without being destroyed to hell, with people either complaining about over-protective bans or whining about being jailed.
The game doesn't need block protection. If you're that worried about people stomping your sandcastles then build them on a private server and only give the link out to people you trust not to be a douche. It's all you can do until Notch adds in password protection for servers.
I really don't think protection is needed at all. The whole idea just sounds ridiculous to me. If block protection was around, people wouldn't be able to expand on buildings or anything like that. It's basically just op blocks that everyone can use, except they're not as easy to delete. If a person built something massive and then left the server and never came back, it'd be just sitting there for ages until the server reset, and nobody would be able to do anything about it.
And there's people complaining about op blocks, saying that it's selfish to have them build stuff out of them to keep their buildings uneditable by the public.
Hello dead horse, I have a brand new baseball bat.
Nobody has actually discussed a viable way to even do this in the first place. That's a bit more important than how effective it could be. Client side would obviously not work at all. That's like a kid bringing his identical Legos to school, and leaving them there without letting anyone know which ones are his. Server side would have to reside in the map itself, which would be a terrible bloat on the map size (each block needing information on who placed it), which would lead to higher bandwidth, which would lead to lag, which would lead to OMG NOTCH THIS GAME LAGS SO BAD WE CAN'T PLAY.
This is just a bad idea at the moment. Let it go. Until there's a standalone client, and a lot more complexity in the game, don't even bother with this idea. Not only that, this would be a waste of Notch's time. There are far more important things to work on (survival, beta, anyone?), than everyone crying over griefers.
Oh, and speaking of beta... THIS IS AN ALPHA. Go ahead and throw out suggestions, but don't tell the guy changing your tires to hurry up and renovate the whole car.

Much better reply than just saying that there isn't a chance of anything like it being implemented now or in the future. In my opinion it would work very well to prevent greifing but as others have said the map size issue prevents it from being the best idea.

It would also create more griefing, though.
Griefers would run around, building random blocks everywhere and on everything.
I play alot of those text based games where each day your earn ACTION POINTS or (AP) what about every minute you can add or delete 10 blocks, I mean greifers wouldnt want to spend time wasting it like that but us real players wouldnt mind since we're making something so cool anyway. Its the perfect solution.

It's sad because a lot of good players are coming up griefers lately. Seems nearly everybody is bored to tears, sorry to say. The folks I know anyway.
I think that idea came out correctly.
have the block ownership stored clientside? (encrypted)
How will other players client know whether or not the block is locked?
