you all know about the snow golem, right? two snow blocks and a pumpkin make a snowman. It can't be controlled, won't follow you, has a tendancy to screw with the landscape (especially at night) but damn does it look neat.
my idea is to expand upon this.
to simplify, my idea will be separated into "tiers."
tier 1: snow golem.
exactly what it says on the tin.
tier 2: golem
golem is crafted, in the same manner as the snow golem, but with a sapling in the place of a pumpkin, and clay instead of snow. it appears to be a monster made from clay (for modeling purposes, a lopsided, melty zombie) with a tree growing out of its head, roots poking out of odd places. It follows you around, and attacks mobs at melee, doing 2 damage and moving as fast as zombies. It has 4 hearts of health. it drops a stick and 4-12 clay.
tier three: gargoyle
the gargoyle is crafted with one stone and brick placed diagonally from each other, with redstone dust on the brick. it will attack mobs around it, dealing 4 hearts of damage, and can fly. right clicking it turns it into a block that obeys gravity and can be collected to place somewhere else. it has eight hearts of health. it drops a cobblestone, and 2-6 bricks.
tier four: (last one) fiend.
placing five enderstone to create a "bowl" and throwing an ender pearl into it summons the last utility mob. In a fiery explosion, it appears, destroying the "bowl" and most things around it. it is a floating eyeball, with a halo of smoke around it. When right clicked, it turns into an item that places itself into your inventory (destroying something if there is no room) and right clicking with it in your hand summons it again (minus the explosion). it attacks mobs in the same manner as the blaze, except instead of setting enemies on fire, it randomly teleports them within five blocks laterally and 20 blocks up. (if there is no free space above the mob, in all of the 2000 possible placement locations, then it dies, dropping nothing.) it attacking endermen causes them (the endermen) to de-spawn. it has 16 hearts of health, and it drops an "ender-portal frame" block or an eye of ender on death. If you attack it, it will explode, with 4 times the power and damage of tnt. to prevent you from accidentally attacking it in a combat situation, it floats outside the range of your sword (aim your arrows carefully :wink.gif:)
that is all. thoughts?
aditional things: infighting partial credit to XBXGXWX, for insiration:
when your minions kill something, they get the XP, and can level up (max lvl 2). The weaker ones challenge the stronger ones, and inevitably die. (note: XP does not affect their overall effectiveness, only their effectiveness against monsters of the same kind(side note: does not affect snow golems, because their attacks do no damage.))
i think its a little too much, though. its just like having wolf pets, except more dramatic.
the golem is too easy to make and over powered. you could make a few hundred and never worry about mobs any more. yes, its easy to make hundreds of them.
the same is true for the gargoyle.
im not tuu sure about the fiend though,
i think having your own 'minions' in minecraft would ruin the game. wolves are okay, though, as they can be found naturally and they dont always work for you, and they are harder to get.

Optifine is awesome!
Now, when can Notch start using 3D instead of linear chunks for minecraft? It would massively improve performance, and increase height limits by hundreds of times. There are mods out there that do that already.

those are valid points, and I have a solution: minion infighting.

I don't think it would happen with the fiends, but instead, if you get to many of them, they turn hostile to everything, (you included) except for each other.
...except more dramatic.
yeah, i'm a drama queen. :wink.gif:
also, I have never had wolves spawn at a time when I happened to have bones on me.
The clay golem is nice.
But the gargoyle is too easy to build and the fiend is too overpowered even though it's hard to get, so I'd exclude those.
Instead why not have different kind of clay golems depending on the sapling you use. A golem made with normal sapling would follow you and attack enemies on sight, a golem made with redwood sapling would attack only if you attacked and a golem made with the grey sapling would attack only when you're attacked.
This way you can choose which AI you prefer.
But mobs killed by golems shouldn't give you any XP and neither the golem when it dies.
Maybe something could be done in the new release is have golems that you spend XP on into order to enchant to life. If you put a drawback on them, then golems could actually be good.
I'm thinking that the "utility mobs" need to be fair to get...
1. more difficult to get materials are used to make it
2. Should only be 1-3 at a time(depending on tier) and they despawn first made if too many.
3.Should need to give it something like how you give a wolf bones but if you don't it will kill you(has to be hard to get material) and it should only stay alive a short time based on the materials
I like the idea of utility mobs, But why stop at ones to aid in combat?
I would like to see a mob that follows you around and has an inventory you can use, acting like a chest that follows you.
And i suppose you could get mobs that gather resources for you like wood and stone.
Good idea man
yes but the resource gathering mobs would need to be made of something that's not impossible to get but sortof hard to get otherwise i could just sit in my house while they get stuff for me...
i get the feeling that these things would get very overpowered very fast. The snowman was put in mostly as a joke, i don't think there is any plan to add other utility mods. There could be some cool applications, but i feel that they shouldn't be very good, mostly there for laughs or to fulfill a specific purpose
I take issue with Fiend, fiends are not constructs. Also Golems and Gargoyals are two very separate constructs fantasy wise. Gargoyles are usually imbued with holy power or magic and existed first as statures while Golems are constructed from natural elements such as stone, iron, ice, clay, etc.
I'm just thrilled that they even added Iron Golems, I fear asking for more.
I'd support more elemental Golems and delegating each one with a behavior, such as stone Golems mining, clay Golems viciously attacking (they are nasty bastards in most D&D games), and perhaps nether Golems guarding nether fortresses despite they are no longer occupied (more parallels to Laputa castle in the sky)
