It should do more damage than a fully drawn bow, but take a longer time to reload and not shoot as far (hence only needing two string). It would also shoot as soon as you click, and take a couple seconds to reload, making you immobile for a couple seconds after shooting. Visually it could look like a bow with a handle on it. It would use arrows as ammo. You could think of the crossbow as a sort of short range "shotgun" (lots of damage, poor range). You could even have it shoot multiple arrows at a time, if Notch wants to make it a true medieval shotgun!
Crossbows are only a little bit more complicated to make than bows, because damage is directly traded for range. This enables players to choose between a bow or crossbow, while both weapons are balanced.
Here's a nether blaze rod version. It has the same range as the bow and shoots flaming bolts! (the gold ingots are blaze rods)
I believe instead of sticks it should be blaze rods, if it does more damage and goes farther then it will be too OP if you can get it your first to second night!
There's not exactly a point to that... I'm sure that will come out as a mod versus an actual part of the game. So, look around in the mods section or use the search bar and check out if someones taken that idea already.

How 'bout if it's crafted with sticks, it has half the range as the bow. But if it's crafted with blaze rods, it has the same range as the bow and shoots flaming bolts! (the gold ingots are blaze rods)
IF there was a crossbow it should have diffrent game mechanics. I imagine a long reloading time, but you can fire it instantly while walking when it's loaded ( I stole that idea from age of chivalry)

Realistically, crossbows would have to shoot farther, you're using the power of a mechanism instead of your arm and you would be able to shoot it whenever you want instead of holding it back with mouse button. You would have to make it majorly slow with reloading. Some have a cranking thingamabob and that's the way it would be possible I guess. I guess you could say the crossbow would be like comparing the crystal sword to the iron one, but it would need a component that would be difficult to obtain.

It's hard to say, you could blame the smaller "bow" size to a shorter range, but more damage as it is more springy. I like the idea however that it is only a bit more complicated to make than a bow (bow-stick+(2)wood=crossbow), but it trades the range for damage. That way the player can pick between a bow or crossbow, depending on what they feel like. You could think of the crossbow as a sort of short range "shotgun" (lots of damage, poor range).
Here we go...
link:bow+crossbow comparison
this basically says crossbows shoot farther but the drawback is accuracy and they are both surprisingly about the same power except up close. For game implementation I agree we should make the crossbow shoot less farther and do more damage with long reload and instant fire.

I wasn't saying crossbows don't shoot farther in real life, I was just thinking as a gameplay element, just like you said.

Saying "there's a mod for that" or even "go look for mods" without contributing is against the rules.

How about the crossbow in the game have similar advantages and disadvantages to bows as real life?
IRL crossbows are useful (in comparison to bows) because:
1. once you draw the string, it can lock in place, allowing you to prepare to fire before engagement with whatever target (think about how annoying it is in the game to charge up your bow while being chased by a creeper when you want to shoot it then and now!) This makes crossbows really easy to use and rather accurate even in the hands of an amateur.
2. they can have winches and stuff to make them have ridiculously high pulls (and from this great speed, range, and power)
IRL bows are useful (in comparison to crossbows) because:
1. you can vary how much energy you put into the projectile (can draw half way if you want... a crossbow requires you to lock it all the way back at full power in conventional designs) which can help with firing rate and also gauging distance
2. you can achieve relatively fast firing rates (depending on crossbow design we are comparing bows to... let's forget those crazy chinese repeating crossbows)
3. you don't have the added resource requirements of adding mechanisms (which should be factored into the crafting recipe if crossbows were in minecraft)
4. bows are generally less bulky (but this wouldn't matter in minecraft...)
So, if crossbows were in minecraft, I'd go ahead and just make bows and crossbows have the same killing power (same range and speed of projectile, as well as same damage), or maybe make crossbows have even greater power (greater range and speed of projectile, as well as greater damage), similar to how they tended to be in real life (if we are talking about medieval common infantry crossbows). Both weapons would be balanced from some of the reasons stated above, namely resource requirements (more stuff needed for the crossbow) and mechanisms of loosing the projectile (which affects firing rate and how much energy you can choose to put in the projectile). Each weapon would maintain their pros and cons while maintaining verisimilitude.
Basically, if crossbows are in, make them have similar advantages and disadvantages over bows as they did in real life and you won't have to worry about balance. Also, you will have a weapon in the game that actually brings something new to the table as opposed to just being a version of the bow that has contrived quirks and arbitrary differences in damage and range that make no damned sense.

1. That's what I was planning, the drawback of having the luxury of firing immediately would be a couple second long reload time.
2.This is a very simple crossbow that the user pulls on the string himself to get it ready to fire. This, combined with the "bow" being smaller, is why the crossbow would shoot half as far as a bow.
Like I've said in previous posts, I really think the crossbow should be made to be an alternate weapon to the bow:
Distance is half that of the bow, but damage is double. Instead of waiting to "charge" a shot before hand, you reload after a shot which takes the same amount of time. Even though the two ranged weapons are "balanced" in a sense, they both have different uses. You can shoot a mob at a distance with the bow, then keep shooting it as it runs toward you. With the crossbow you must get closer and aim your shots well, as the mobs will get to you sooner than if you had a bow.
So in the end each weapon is personal preference, and are both good for certain situations. But that's my idea of the cross bow. Your idea could work, but the crossbow would need to include more expensive materials, as you've stated.

I totally agree with everything you are saying except the range and damage thing. If damage is greater, it only makes sense that the range should also be greater if the same projectile is used. The crossbow would be stronger, but the disadvantages of reloading, having to draw all the way back every time, and using more raw materials would balance it with the bow. No need to cut range. Actually, having the increased range would make the crossbow a bit tricky to use in some circumstances since you wouldn't have as much control over arcing arrows... but those would be rare instances where that would be a problem.

Javelin Idea: more damage than crossbow, but even less range.

unless its hard-ish to make( as in iron+ in order to make) then make it same range/more nd stronger
Lol :laugh.gif:, that's what gave me this idea! I even posted a javelin idea here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/708739-javelin/ You also shouldn't be able to move while reloading. :tongue.gif:
