Gives the player a larger reward, but requires them to put in a little more effort to get it...
Here is the main idea:
I think that mining gold ore should drop 6-12 gold nuggets, the same thing zombie pigmen drop. Then instead of crafting a gold ingot with 9 gold nuggets at a crafting table, 8 gold nuggets should be placed into a furnace and smelted to produce 1 gold ingot (:GoldBar:). 8 ingots will still be smeltable by one coal however, as nuggets should take 8 times faster to smelt than other blocks. The same mechanic should apply to iron, and other future ores. When mining iron ore, instead of getting an iron ore block, you get 6-12 iron nuggets.
This is how smelting multiple nuggets at once will work:
Smelting would work like this: You put 7 nuggets into a furnace. It won't start smelting, because you need 8 nuggets to smelt into an ingot. You put one more nugget in. It starts smelting the nuggets, just like any other block. By the time the progress bar completes, 8 nuggets are removed from the smelting slot and one ingot is placed into the product slot. If you remove nuggets so that there is less than 8 before the smelting finishes, the progress bar stops and treats the nuggets like they were just placed in the smelting slot. The smelting will start again once 8 nuggets are present in the smelting slot. This will be very easy to program, as I have explained the full procedure in detail!
Here is the reasoning behind getting 6-12 nuggets per ore block:
The reason I think 6-12 nuggets should be dropped is that it would take up more room than just an un-smelted ore block (:goldore:). This adds more strategy to inventory management, and creates a reason to build storage mine carts and mine tracks in your mines! It also feels more rewarding, breaking an ore block and getting a whole bunch of nuggets :biggrin.gif:. It just doesn't feel right getting a single stone block with ore in it (:goldore:), even after hacking away at it with a pickaxe... :huh.gif:
Why bothering with nuggets will benefit you:
From one ore block, you get a minimum of 2 less than one ingots worth, or 4 more than an ingots worth. That gives you an average of 9 nuggets per ore block, which is one more nugget than what is needed for 1 ingot. So on average, eight ore blocks will yield you 9 ingots. This is proven true by this law.
Why you can't lose in the long run:
The chances of getting less than one ingots worth of nuggets is 50% less than getting more than one ingots worth. How often do you find a single ore block by itself? Because you often find more than one ore block in an ore vein. The more ore blocks you have, the higher the probability of getting more than one ingots worth per block. As mentioned in the section above this, this law states that you will get 9 nuggets for every ore block mined, which is 1.125 ingots, in the long run.
Why nuggets make mining less "monotonous":
From a gameplay perspective, using nuggets instead of blocks makes the game more dynamic, and adds more strategy to the game. Yes, the mining is monotonous. That's why getting 6-12 nuggets makes it more exciting and dynamic. Sometimes you will get 6 nuggets. Bummer. Sometimes you will hit the mother load of 12 nuggets. That is a celebration in itself! What sounds better to you (read spoiler):
Mine 1st ore block.
Pickup ore block item.
Mine 2nd ore block.
Pickup ore block item.
Mine 3rd ore block.
Pickup ore block item.
Return to home on surface.
Smelt 3 ore blocks using 3 coal, into 3 ore ingots.
or
Mine 1st ore block.
Pickup 12 ore nuggets, yes!
Mine 2nd ore block.
Pickup 6 ore nuggets, damn.
Mine 3rd ore block.
Pickup 9 ore nuggets, alright.
Return to home on surface.
Smelt 27 ore nuggets into 3 ore ingots using 3 coal, and have 3 nuggets left over.

You mine ores and you get ore blocks, I really see nothing wrong with that. Nuggets in the game require 9 pieces to craft into only a single gold ingot. That means that you have to mine more gold ore blocks if the drop nuggets then you do if they drop ore blocks, if they drop as many as you state. You're better off hacking away at Zombie Pigmen to get your nuggets, at least they can come in groups of 18 sometimes.

I don't fully understand what you're trying to say, but in my idea, you smelt 8 nuggets at a time into 1 ingot, as I've stated in this section:

I hope I answered all of your "questions" (statements?)... :cool.gif:
I support, makes sense, well thought out, and like you said, would be more fun, however it'd also be fun to occasionally get 1, then you just facepalm and think to yourself "**** my life". :tongue.gif:
Hmm... Gives the player a larger reward, but requires them to put in a little more effort to get it...
Makes more sense than the current system...
Finally allows me to use every last bit of coal time without scouring the earth for more iron...
You've got my approval.
Just as long as you don't try to suggest a similar idea for diamonds.
Well, seeing as diamonds don't smelt, that just wouldn't make sense... :tongue.gif: Besides, diamonds are rare enough that you deserve the diamond as soon as you've found it!

Lol :laugh.gif: , thanks for reading, I'm glad you like it!
I would support this for gold, but not for anything else. However, I don't think there is a need for smelting to be involved. It's already possible to make an ingot out of nine nuggets and nothing currently in Minecraft requires multiples to smelt, nor more than one of an item in the same space of a craft grid. Having to smelt multiple nuggets would contradict how the game currently works.
I think that the only reason for playing games is to have fun. In my opinion, running back to your storage minecart to fill it with ore nuggets, only because your inventory is full, isn't fun at all. Imagine that you find a dungeon chest. Great! But your inventory is full of ore nuggets, so you'll have to go back to your storage minecart first and return later.
It's realistic and makes sense, but it's not fun, because it is an interruption of cave exploring. It should be "allowed" to stay in caves longer, if you are well prepared for it.
Unless all you're doing is mining ores, you shouldn't ever run out of inventory space. Think of how much room ore blocks take up when you go mining. It's usually 1 or 2 slots. With my idea, 2 full stacks of ore blocks equates to 16 slots being taken up by nuggets. You have 36 available slots. So 128 ingots worth of nuggets (16 full slots), takes up 40% of you're inventory. This is a perfect amount, because it makes you think about managing your space. If you use storage minecarts, space isn't a problem. If you are carrying 128 ingots worth of nuggets by yourself, you still have 20 inventory spaces left to put other essential items in. In my post, the section Why nuggets make mining less "monotonous":, explains why my idea makes mining more fun. Read it, then tell me why my idea still isn't more fun... :dry.gif:

The only other ores I suggested this for is iron, because gold and iron are the only current metal ores. As more metals get added, they can all use this same nugget system.

Smelting is already involved. You smelt ore blocks to get ingots, but instead of smelting ore blocks, you smelt nuggets. The current crafting of nuggets into ingots should be removed if my idea is ever implemented.
Having to smelt multiple nuggets would contradict how the game currently works.
This is true, but as I stated in my section This is how smelting multiple nuggets at once will work:, it wouldn't be very hard to implement this system, as it is a very simple concept. :wink.gif:
In my opinion the current mining system is alright by itself, but I agree that it gets old pretty quick. I don't think that adding the feature of nuggets in the game will make it more "dynamic" or at least not because you get 6-12 nuggets. I do agree, however, that adding this feature will make a lot more sense but Minecraft isn't really the type of game that tries to be RL like. Also I wanna ask you something - don't you think that nuggets are better off making stacks of 8? - because if they make stacks of 64 it's gonna be kinda pointless...; Anyway I still think that it's a good touch as long as we're talking about metals.
But if you could only make stacks of 8, then 10 ingots worth of nuggets would take up 10 inventory spaces! Now that's going too far...
You actually can run out of inventory space, even without unnecessary things (think of swords, picks, shovels, lapis lazuli, gold/iron ore, gold/iron ingots from chests, water buckets, lava buckets, melon/pumpkin seeds, saddles, redstone, diamond, obsidian, food, bones, flint, arrows, bow, rotten flesh, enderpearl, string, spider eye, mossy cobblestone, torches, coal, wood for more picks/torches, dirt/gravel/cobblestone blocks, stronghold content etc.)
Lapis Lazuli ore and Redstone ore do already drop different amounts of items. That's not bad, because you don't craft anything special out of them (it feels better imo if you actually know that you just found four gold ore blocks, of which you can craft your first watch). Also, what do you do, if you have 10 iron nuggets? You smelt 8 into an ingot and have two left. This way, you have extra scrap products that you can't use for anything and lie around in your chest. The reasons you give are that minecarts get a purpose. Good!
The second reason is inventory management (I've already explained in my last post why I don't think that this kind of inventory management is fun at all). The third reason are the WOW! and OH NO! effects that you get if you get many/little nuggets. I've also explained why I wouldn't like these "effects".
The nuggets have disadvantages, which affect the gameplay too bad for giving storage minecarts a purpose.
Don't forget that I respect your idea. Everyone has different opinions...
Also, what do you do, if you have 10 iron nuggets?
You smelt 8 of them into an ingot, then put the two you have left to the side, ready for the next smelting job. If you have 38 nuggets the next time you go to your furnace to smelt, you can use the nuggets from last time to make an even 40 nuggets, which would smelt into 8 ingots.
You actually can run out of inventory space, even without unnecessary things
I play Minecraft, so I already know this. Because nuggets would take 8 times the room of ore blocks, obviously this would make inventory space even more tight. But this is for a reason, as I stated in my post (you already know the reasons). I think you should prepare to go mining, just like you prepare yourself before going into a stronghold, or the nether. You don't just rush on in, without armoring yourself, or bringing weapons. You should have to prep for mining by clearing all the junk out of your inventory, and only bringing the necessary items. If you find a stronghold while mining, you probably will want to return to the surface to prep yourself for going into the stronghold, as you are currently prepped for mining.
The nuggets have disadvantages, which affect the gameplay too bad for giving storage minecarts a purpose.
I just think this is a better system then what's currently in Minecraft. The "disadvantages" are what gives storage minecarts a purpose. Think about it, the only disadvantages that this system has is the fact that nuggets take up 8 times the space of ore blocks. While nugget management is a disadvantage to some people, the advantages out weigh the disadvantages. It making mining better for both people who think nuggets are a disadvantage, and for those who favor this system.
The Yes/No of the poll is currently at 3.0 :smile.gif:
First, I like the idea. It really seems well thought out, and the multi-block smelting would open the door for some new possibilities beyond this. On top of that, I can imagine recipes that might use nuggets instead of ingots. On a side note, it would be 1.125 ingots per ore block, you have 1.25; minor error, no biggy.

Good point, my bad! I'm glad you like my idea. Hopefully my tweets get noticed by Notch, Jeb, and/or Mojang...
That's cool idea. However, to be strict, you can't meet iron in "nuggets", as it's more reactive than gold. Only in ore. Because of that it seems fine only for gold. Still one can say, that gold drops nuggets, and iron drops ore clods. That would work. I hope you wanted to add this system only to gold and iron?
You could just call it iron chunks instead of nuggets then... :tongue.gif: Besides, not many people are going to know any better, and you get cut diamonds from diamond ore blocks! Here is a quote from one of my previous replies:

This is a very good idea. I never liked mining and this would make it a little better. I actually hope this gets implemented. I think Notch should look at all these posts to get ideas. And I think he should get opinions from Minecraft users before adding new stuff to the game.
