They don't respawn anymore and you have to breed them (in 1.9 pre-release.)
Here's 2 things about this that anger me:
1) in multiplayer servers you could run around killing all the animals and ruin the game for everyone else
2) it takes waaay too long to raise baby animals considering how many resources that a fully grown animal drops upon death
:dry.gif:
I think the breeding system is nice, I really do, but if we're going to have that, animals should respawn (but perhaps at a much slower rate) and animals should not have to go through a baby stage. I want the breeding system to be like it is in 1.9 pre-release 2.
I agree with you 100%, I think it just needs some adjusting and it should be fine. I also hate the idea of baby animals but I can see a lot people complaining if they took it out.
I'm sure someone will make a mod that lets you buy animals or maybe it'll be in the actual game. After all, there's NPC villages.
What if you choose to play with no structures?
Also -- can believe I have to say this --
MINECRAFT IS INBETA!!!
Thats the reason I made this topic. Notch is still working on Minecraft, so he's just throwing out these ideas for us to judge. And I say its a stupid idea unless he fixes animal respawning.

I see what you are saying but notch is trying to make the game harder if you dont like it i am sher there will be a mod for this or something with Bukkit for Multiplayer so they will respawn.

I appreciate that, but the game is more annoying than hard with this. And I shouldn't have to use mods to make animals respawn normally
a better idea would be animals to randomly go into love mode, and reproduce naturally if the herd gets too small. This would be more realistic, as IRL animals wont make love only if you give them food. It may be useful, but thats not the sole reason.

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.
I'd most like a herd system. If there are too few herds of one type of animal within a very large area, a new one spawns. If a herd has too few in it, they create more. They'd also travel around. if one member of the herd dies somewhere, the rest of that herd (and only that herd) would be more likely to avoid that place. Finding one would be somewhat rare, so farming animals yourself would be beneficial.
Hey, guess what? It is a legitimate concern. Shut up.
You need animals not just for food, but for armor, beds, and most importantly, arrows. Now tell me sir, would you like to be stuck up a lava creek in a cave without a paddle with baddies closing in, and have an empty quiver?
Thought not.
The breeding system needs to be quicker, and produce more animals.
If this does happen this way I would suggest having stuff like eggs found in chests. Said eggs are GUARANTEED to produce a chicken. You would find two of em in every chest.
But then comes the problem of other animals, like sheep, or cows. Crap...

Better yet, they enter love mode when they feed on wild grass.

on a smp server you can just ask an admin to spawn in some.
Agreed. People want things, then they don't. What does it take to please some people these days?
You can't please everyone in the world. Few companies try to please the majority, but we've all seen what most do, right? 5 hour long games for $60? Right? You guys seen it?
I'm personally not sure what Notch intends on doing with the game, and how to balance it out, but it takes the community to monitor, and perform discussion for Notch to see what would seem good or bad. Though not everything you say he will do, because he's noone's slave, he can still get a general idea on whats going on and try to figure something out. Doesn't mean he will do it all the time though. After all, it's his game, so he'd code it how he wants to.

They won't respawn in 1.9.
The minecraft wiki says that they don't respawn anymore.
Get over it. ಠ_ಠ
Welp, looks like there will be a new type of griefing in minecraft then :biggrin.gif:
