Having the ability to play either the pre-release or released version of the game with a click instead of having to go into the file system and change filenames.

I would like to suggest having an option, or even just a button on the launcher, which allows us to download and launch the Beta testing client/ server version; to alleviate the hassle of having to rename and hunt around in folders to play the game as beta.
So if you push the normal "Log In" button then you update and play the game as usual and if you hold shift while hitting the "Log In" button then you update and play the beta version (or however you want to make choosing beta to occur.)
Also, I don't know if everyone else's launcher does this but the words for "log in" and "options" are black and very hard to see.
Allow me the opportunity to draw attention to the reason behind the suggestion.

Hope it helps, and thank you for taking the time to respond in the first place.
Released version isn't out, and when it is finally released, Beta will likely disappear, like with all games.
As an added note, it takes less than 15 seconds to rename your .jar, move it into a backup folder, and download the new version.
Actual time may vary based on computer power and internet connection, as well as user skill. Void where prohibited, taxes and license fees may apply.

We can argue about semantics if you like, but personally, i'd rather just play minecraft and let the morons of the community just fall to the edges going "But we is playin that thar beta i reckon, i dunno what beta sposed tuh mean but if my sister says it's true it must be, coz she's my mom and anything she tell me is for true!"
Let us assume that release is the same god damn thing as beta as there will continue to be improvements, updates, and patches; the only thing different is the name.
Then let us assume that by choosing to not update, you are actually playing with fewer bug-fixes, fewer improvements, fewer features, and fewer utilities.
Now let us assume that Notch will have delivered his modding API so mod compatibility issues will be aeons passed.
With nothing but constant improvement from this point forward, I do not understand why one would want to remain in pre-release, above points withstanding.
You'll forgive me if I seem rather contrary to your suggestion and your attitude. Seriously, fix your attitude or I'll fix it for you.

Minecraft is a WIP (Work In Progress), not a beta, when money was accepted in exchange for a release of the game, WIP or otherwise, it was officially no longer in beta, it was no longer being tested; updated, yes, tested, no.
The 1.8.1 release is not there to be beta tested in hopes that the bugs will be worked out so it can be released as a final version, 1.8.1 is released as a working version of a work in progress, while the "pre-release" A.K.A 1.9 has been pre-released as a beta test so that the bugs can be found and squashed before it's release as a work in progress and we can move on to 1.9.1 et cetera.
I cannot forgive you for being contrary to a suggestion which you completely avoided speaking to, because there is nothing to forgive. You made no contrary argument as to why the game client or community would be worse for having the ability to play either the pre-release or released version of the game with a click instead of having to go into the file system and change filenames and such.
I am no stranger to ambiguous, thoughtless and absolute rejection of my ideas; you can easily click the Moar Armor, NPC Towns, Quests and Skills in my signature to see my thread from almost a year ago which suggested many aspects of the 1.8 update. The suggestion, much like this one, met rejection after rejection from the mouth-breathers, yet here a year later we are enjoying it.
PS - keep your threats on the playground at school, on the internet you just sound like an idiot
I have absolutely no idea what you are suggesting, since we already ahve the ability to play older versions.
2.)
Quit insulting people who disagree with you
3.)
Your thread about NPC villages and whatnot is irrelevant to this conversation, and your claim of notch adding it isn't true. Notch had NPC villages planned for a LONG time. It had nothing to do with you. He also does not have quests, more armor, or paint.

1. Then you are either entirely devoid of simple linguistic skills, since I have stated, restated and even reworded the suggestion, or you are like most people in the forums and completely skipped past the parts of the suggestion which explained what it was, probably with a glazed look due to many generations of heavy inbreeding.
But at the risk of repeating myself yet again, I will restate the reworded restatement of the statement which states the stated suggested suggestion. (For you grammar nazi's out there, I realize the last stated was redundant but I claim poetic license.)
Having the ability to play either the pre-release or released version of the game with a click instead of having to go into the file system and change filenames.
2. See above. Not a single person has actually disagreed with the suggestion, they simply do not understand what it is. If you had read the comments you would see that they are all statements of confusion, not disagreement. Furthermore, I'm very weary with all the people who come into forums, halfway read threads if they bother to read anything beyond the title at all, then assume they know enough to comment on the subject, and bring up things which were explained earlier in the thread, even as closely as the immediately preceding post (points at Sting_Auer)
3. My previous reference to my thread regarding the adventure update was to show that things which I have suggested met with much opposition, yet came about anyway. Whether or not Notch used any portion of my thread has yet to be confirmed or denied and your suggestion that you have knowledge no one else does shows you're delusional and will say anything, even lie, to make a point. This is most likely some self-righteous extension of your personality which oppresses your ability to partake of actual objective judgment. It would certainly explain your willingness to lazily skip over blocks of text which hold information regarding the subject matter you wish to show your self-perceived expertise speaking about.
Allow me to respond in a manner you are used to hearing in real life and which specifically depicts my reaction to your threat HA!

Waiting for you to put money where your mouth is, son. Generally, when one argues a point; they provide argument against said invalidity, insignificance, stupidity, or disrespect that you claim against. I see none, so there is nothing for you to refute outside of a few coined terms and boasting your enormous unwarranted self-importance.
Minecraft is a WIP (Work In Progress), not a beta, when money was accepted in exchange for a release of the game, WIP or otherwise, it was officially no longer in beta, it was no longer being tested; updated, yes, tested, no.
Speaking from the horse's mouth, Notch calls this game a beta as it is not the final version. Simply because you pay for a product does not mean it is not beta. It simply means you become a member of the closed beta. I've seen plenty of games IN beta which have cash shops, DLC, and other full-retail items. The game is beta until the creator officially releases it. This game is not, though I would argue that the amount of viral publicity toward it is phenomenal.
Again, it's still a beta. Paying money for an incomplete product means you know the product is an incomplete project when you purchase; in this case, beta means it is far from the final desired product where the retail or released version has everything that the creator would deem necessary.
Even then, upheaval is made from one released version to the next; considering World of Warcraft's considerable upheaval when Cataclysm was released. Even then, these versions of the PAID and RELEASED games were called "beta" before official release. You still had to pay for the subscription, you still had to purchase all relevant previous expansions, it was still called a beta and not a WIP, figure that out.
And you have provided no supporting argument as to why one would wish to play pre-release over release. If you can name... I'll go with ... Three sounds like a golden number... Three reasons why this would be a suggestion worth considering, then I will consider it.
Until then, I see no point because:
There are only incremental improvements from here-on-out.
The modding API, from Notch's statements alone, will be released along with the official release.
Any removal of old systems (minecart glitch) will be supplemented with inclusion of new elements.
Older modes will have considerably more bugs, glitches, and memory usage (optimization comes at the end of development in most dev models).
Older modes will have less blocks, tools, and features.
As time moves on, more and more servers will move toward the more-content-rich patches leaving fewer pre-release servers which leaves less options for play for the non-released players. Of course, die hard servers will continue to exist; but let's not dwell on the exceptions to a generalization.
That's six points, to make things easier, pull that other hand out of your pants to help you count.
So, I'm a mouth breather because I reject a poorly represented idea with ambiguous necessity of inclusion? I wouldn't call my rejection to be absolute; and I surely wouldn't call my 6 reasons for rejection to be thoughtless. Perhaps you would like me to disregard all 6 of them and agree with you like a little yuppie. That's not happening either. Also, how is my rejection ambiguous when I laid out the SAME reasons in my previous posts? I suppose you are just looking for unrealistic unilateral support for your half-baked idea.
Here's a tip. If it's half-baked, move your idea back into the oven to completely finish.
PS - keep your threats on the playground at school, on the internet you just sound like an idiot
PS - I'll say whatever the Hell I want to whoever the Hell I want. I don't need your conception of idiot (a blanket which seems to wrap comfortably around you) to dissuade me from speaking my mind. Simply because I disagree with your idea doesn't mean I'm an idiot. If there's a hole in the boat, I'm going to point it out. In this case, I pointed out six. Now you can either argue with me that the holes don't exist as water gushes in, or you can fix the damn problem.
If you spent at least half the time you spent circumnavigating around the word "moron" reading your suggestion and improving instead; you wouldn't have people taking a **** parade over your pride and joy.
I don't appreciate being called an inbred mouth-breather, and neither does anyone else. I suggest you clean up your act or else nobody will take your seriously.
Also, what Yoshi said. He/she makes some excellent points. Your suggestion was not very clear, so we asked you to clarify. In response, you blatantly insulted us, and we do not appreciate it.
Now all you have to do is click on the shortcut to open up the bin folder, move your minecraft.jar into the "original" folder while you place your new .jar file in the bin folder, so all you have to do when you're done is move some files without renaming or finding the folders again. YAY, that was easy!!!
Seriously why would they take their time to make new code in their client just so you can be lazy for something that will last a few weeks. Takes you 10 seconds and takes them a lot longer than 10 seconds to make this new feature that won't even last very long at all.
Whether or not you feel it's necessary, the time taken is negligible, or just flat out don't understand the difference between beta and released, this is a suggestion forum. This is where suggestions go, this thread is of a suggestion, the suggestion is good whether you think so or not, whether it's necessary or a good time to write it in (especially so soon after a launcher update) is a matter of opinion, and I'm open to the discussion. But to say it's a bad idea is clearly just a hateful statement made by small people with smaller minds. I maintain that being able to play the released version or the prereleased version with the click of a button is not only manageable, but a good idea whereas more people will partake in the bug squashing and help the game and it's community as a whole. I would like to add that the updating of either version with that click would be awesome, so if you wanted to help squash bugs you could squash in the most recent beta version, or if you wanted to play you could do so with the most recent version. It just makes everything a little more tidy, a little more professional, a little less wtf. I don't want to have to change file names and click this, move that, put my right foot in and shake it all about, I just want to play the f*kin game.
You have your opinion, I have my opinion.
I never flamed anyone for not "agreeing" with my suggestion, by which I'm sure it was meant that people were not in favor of it. I flamed people for their complete lack of intelligence when speaking about Beta Vs. Release. The difference was clearly laid out in an earlier post in this thread. BTW - Just because you call something Beta, doesn't mean it's a beta, even if it's the grand master of all things minecraft Notch. I could be a chicken expert and call a cow a chicken, that doesn't make it a chicken.
Additionally, I flamed those who have disagreed giving no reason; this happens a lot in the suggestion forums, people are most often moved to enter a thread and go "nope, hate it, you suck"; no reasoning, no actual thoughts on the matter, no contribution whatsoever, just "nope". To them I say "F You" as you can clearly see through this thread.
Some people find it gratifying to sh*t on people's ideas and treat them poorly, perhaps it gives them the single sense of accomplishment they can cling to in the world of perpetual failure they no doubt exist in, I'm not sure, they should find a shrink and figure it out. Either way, if you come to forums just to hate, just do us all favor, and masturbate instead. I'm sure you can find some lolicon on your favorite website.
To Notch, ILY, thanks for "releasing" the game putting all this semantic BS to rest. I'd still like the buttons though ;-)
I never flamed anyone for not "agreeing" with my suggestion, by which I'm sure it was meant that people were not in favor of it. I flamed people for their complete lack of intelligence when speaking about Beta Vs. Release.
Yet, you made it seem as though anyone who disagreed had a complete lack of intelligence. People will disagree, people have their reasons; some are just kind enough to state them.
The difference was clearly laid out in an earlier post in this thread.
We understand the difference. My question arose on why one would wish to play one version over the next and vice-versa. Why would we want to play the previous iteration when the next was so much better?
BTW - Just because you call something Beta, doesn't mean it's a beta, even if it's the grand master of all things minecraft Notch. I could be a chicken expert and call a cow a chicken, that doesn't make it a chicken.
You could use this logic on any sort of reference material from an encyclopedia(pick your favorite) to a dictionary. Saying "Just because this book written by some 'Webster' dude says the word means this doesn't mean it does" is a highly unverifiable claim as the definition of a word has the potential to change from one person to the next or one situation to the next.
If you take the word "bad" for example; bad means... well... not good, inferior, etc. However, "This is the baddest game in the world" means it is somehow superior, great, or other similar. Notch and the community says the game is currently in beta as it has not officially been released. Whether you disagree about it's development state is not an issue. Again, we're going with the official Mojang and community-wide verdict and not the musings of an individual.

I don't condone people whom just spam threads with single-word responses. However, that is no reason to flame them. All flaming I have done to you is retaliatory so you can understand how simple words can affect the moods of others. I'm sure you appreciate being called a dumb-ass as much as the next person.
Some people find it gratifying to sh*t on people's ideas and treat them poorly, perhaps it gives them the single sense of accomplishment they can cling to in the world of perpetual failure they no doubt exist in, I'm not sure, they should find a shrink and figure it out. Again you try to apologize with a back-handed assumption; this is immature and demeaning. Not to us, but toward yourself. I can do that too. For example: I am sorry, I reread your piece of meaningless rhetoric and have found that-- after slamming my head into a concrete wall several times and drinking a liter of PCP-laced whiskey-- I actually agree with this steaming pile of ****.
You see? It means nothing and is instead more insulting than if you had said nothing at all.
Final note:
Do not expect respect if you show none. You gotta give it to get it.
Yet, you made it seem as though anyone who disagreed had a complete lack of intelligence. People will disagree, people have their reasons; some are just kind enough to state them.
No one agreed or disagreed with the suggestion, only couldn't understand 'one button 1.9, other button 1.8.1' and I still think the retards should just put on a helmet. People disagree with anything they didn't think of first, the imbecilic seldom create, only destroy. If they don't state a reason, they don't have a reason, if they have a reason and do not state it they are worthless, and non-contributional people can just stay the F out of my threads.
We understand the difference. My question arose on why one would wish to play one version over the next and vice-versa. Why would we want to play the previous iteration when the next was so much better?
Why do you think that YOU have the only opinion that matters? I play 1.9(2) because it has hardcore mode, others may play 1.8.1 because it's finished, why they do it, I don't know, and I don't care. My question to you is, why should we limit their options? I'm suggesting a way that people have MORE options and morons keep saying no no, let's not do that, that would make the game easier to access, easier to play the version we want. Somehow, said morons, think that making the game better is worse. To them, again, I say F You.
You could use this logic on any sort of reference material from an encyclopedia(pick your favorite) to a dictionary.
And you should. Those who kneel at the feet of people they've been told are "the authority" on a matter do themselves a disservice. Perhaps you are one of many sheep that will follow all the rest into the slaughterhouse because you lack the ability to think for yourself, if so, I pity you. As I pity those who come to suggestion forums, make no contribution, and **** all over the ideas of others in an attempt to somehow feel good about their otherwise useless life. Most likely because they are sheep following the flock.
Saying "Just because this book written by some 'Webster' dude says the word means this doesn't mean it does" is a highly unverifiable claim as the definition of a word has the potential to change from one person to the next or one situation to the next.

I lol at your attempt to utilize slang to prove your failing point.
I don't condone people whom just spam threads with single-word responses. However, that is no reason to flame them. All flaming I have done to you is retaliatory so you can understand how simple words can affect the moods of others. I'm sure you appreciate being called a dumb-ass as much as the next person.
That is every reason to ridicule them.
Contribute, or GTFO. Go be a piece of doody in someone else's thread if that's all you want to do. But anyone that comes into mine and runs their mouth like an ass is going to be called an ass.
The Minecraft community in general is a bunch of whiney ass kids that want to play blocks, it's been that way for years; so I care so little about what anyone on here has to say, or how they feel. They are generally selfish and useless, lack all degrees of foresight, respect or even the basic values of a community. They are dogs, and so I come here, put in my two cents, and EVERY time receive nothing but naysay wrapped up in stupidity from a self-important "community". So F them, it is my hope that those who visited this thread and got eRageous will simply not read any thread I ever post in the future. They are a cancer on the Minecraft forums, and the whole place would be better off without them.
I've made effort to enrage certain people in this thread so they will just leave me alone, and never, ever, visit my threads or bring their complete lack of intelligence to my computer screen again.
I don't know where you saw me apologize, I've even re-read the excerpt. I don't apologize for calling a spade a spade. But I must lol at you for calling a suggestion which would better the game a pile of ****, perhaps you would know best.
PS - Don't use the words "we" or "us" in a post. You are you and that's all you are, you speak only for yourself, you do not represent any group of people, you do not hold any special importance.

That's six points, to make things easier, pull that other hand out of your pants to help you count.

Also, what Yoshi said. He/she makes some excellent points. Your suggestion was not very clear, so we asked you to clarify. In response, you blatantly insulted us, and we do not appreciate it.
1) get the Minecraft.jar.
2) start -> run -> %appdata% -> .minecraft -> bin
3) CTRL+C and CTRL+V
4) Done
1 click to download it
2 clicks to select the folder
1 click to select the file and copypaste it
____________________
4 clicks is hassle?
Learn C# or Java and do this yourself, it's quite easy, but it doesn't deserve Notch's attention.
It is far too easy as is to switch your .jars
Attention, please follow these steps that make your life easier when you are lazy:
1. Make a folder in your desktop called "Minecraft"
2. Go to your .Minecraft folder
3. Right click on the bin folder and select "Create Shortcut"
4. Move that shortcut inside your "Minecraft" folder that you have on your desktop
5. Open the "Minecraft" folder and make another folder called "Original"
6. place the original copy of minecraft.jar inside the "Original" folder
________________________________________________________________________
DONE!!!
Patch Notes, Ability to moderate your threads, Copper, Tin, Silver, Bronze, and Steel, Depth Increase, Layers in the ground of water/lava, Moar Forum Icons, Moar realistic ore veinsWe understand the difference. My question arose on why one would wish to play one version over the next and vice-versa. Why would we want to play the previous iteration when the next was so much better?

I lol at your attempt to utilize slang to prove your failing point.
I don't know where you saw me apologize, I've even re-read the excerpt. I don't apologize for calling a spade a spade. But I must lol at you for calling a suggestion which would better the game a pile of ****, perhaps you would know best.
That was the point.
I never got respect to begin with, and this ain't your momma's house, no one gives a **** about you.
Perhaps these two sentences will help you
