I don't know if I'm entirely for this simply because when you're down in a mine and your tool breaks and all your backup tools break it's handy to have easy access to decent tools. I guess you could just bring out your handy-dandy furnace while mining and smelt some stone or have a stack ready made, but I guess I just think it would be annoying.
Yeah, it would make the game harder. But I would prefer if the game became more challenging rather than just plain harder. (In other words, make more difficult to attain things but don't just bog down the normal, easy stuff down with unnecessary difficulty.)
There's my two cents. It's more of a personal preference sort of thing.
I like the idea, I really do, but I also recognize that it effectively chokes on itself; the player already tends to gather excessive amounts of Cobblestone and this would only make that tendency more of an annoyance, since instead of it just being a handy supply from which the player can instantly make a spare tool just by adding a stick or two, it becomes something that they need to gather coal or charcoal for to make useable.
If we were going to go this route, I would say, allow cobblestone to be gathered by hand (at an incredibly slow rate) and pickaxes gather smoothstone directly as smoothstone (and maybe allow smooth stone to be crafted into cobblestone)
better quality tools is more so a use. They have the same look as stone tools, but are given a +25% durability as suggested above.
I had also at one point suggested smoothstone armor, which would be handy, as not everyone wishes to waste their iron on armor, but would enjoy something above leather.
I see where the OP is coming from. I've always thought that tools from cobble made no sense. It implies that you are, essentially, tying or gluing together a bunch of rocks into the shape of a tool. However, I do also agree with the points below.

Possibly, a compromise between the two can be used? I propose the following:
Cobblestone can be gathered by hand.
Cobble tools still exist, but their durability is reduced, representing that they are largely improvised.
An additional tier of smooth stone tools is added, which has higher durability than the current stone tools.
Cobble tools would look crude and pieced together, while the new stone tools would inherit the original look.
You don't need to smelt stone to craft it into a pickaxe. Using cobblestone is most realistic way of doing it. You break stone to create shards, the shards would be used in the pickaxe. Technically one would require that it be one fragment of rock and not three, but this wouldn't be feasible in the Minecraft setting.
It's a minor naming nuance that has no relevence at all. Smelting stone to make stone pickaxes would be annoying and frustrating. I don't want to use wooden pickaxes to mine coal. Do you realize how slow that is?
I think a different approach could be used to make wooden tool more appealing. If items in your inventory had weight and that weight affected your movement. Wood tools would be the lightest of all the tools and thus you could move faster with wooden tools than stone tools.
Adding weight could have effects on many different things. It could slow you down, reduce how fast you can sprint, increase food consumption, lessen critical hit ratio, increase fall damage. I wouldn't say it would have a noticable effect on these values. I think carying full stacks of cobble and other things on you would have a more deterministic role, but that is for another thread.
Really wooden tools aren't supposed to be used regularly. I don't think we should be looking for reasons to be forced to use them more.
Bringing this thread back because I made a redundant one without knowing about this... I totally agree. The stone tools definitely look like they'd be crafted from stone, not cobblestone, and it would balance the game more.
Yeah, it would make the game harder. But I would prefer if the game became more challenging rather than just plain harder. (In other words, make more difficult to attain things but don't just bog down the normal, easy stuff down with unnecessary difficulty.)
But that makes all tools except for diamond ones bad to have in the game. The strangest thing about Minecraft is that it's more fun when you have to do the semi-tedious stuff.
Just throwing my opinion back into the ring here, as the other thread was locked. I wouldn't mind if it was changed or not, but I have yet to hear of an outstandingly good reason why something so ingrained into the minds of players should be changed. It would kind of be like if Borderlands 2 released a patch that made so when you get downed you have to kill an enemy or be revived by a teammate, but then you also had to press the button to reload your gun afterwards.
So I'm still on the fence about this.

Also restating my opinion: If there's no good reason to make the change, why do so? I have yet to see a valid reason as to why (smooth)stone tools would be better for the game than (cobble)stone tools.
The stone tools definitely look like they'd be crafted from stone, not cobblestone, and it would balance the game more.
If this is the case, why not change the texture to reflect being made of cobblestone? It wouldn't really balance the game more, just add an extra step, again comparable to having to craft wheat into dough and then bake it to make bread; it adds an extra step, but that step doesn't make the game more challenging.

This would pretty much bring minecraft to the days of alpha where you made a hatchet out of wood and dwelled naked in a cave thinking 'what fun!'. I only support if stone is a little easier to get without the use of fuel.
I think this would be annoying. I like to get iron tools by my first night, then jump to an enchanted diamond pickaxe by the next night. This wouldnt be challenging, just annoying. It does add some much needed realism, but im gonna have to vote no for this one.
This wouldn't help as much as harm. I know that wooden tools aren't used much until stone is gathered, but that is for a reason. Mojang and 4J don't want players just going around with a wooden sword, beating the heck out of cows until, well, the cows come home. They made them super weak compaired to stone so you would go get the stone to make the better tools. They made cobblestone tools weak compaired to iron so you would use them to get the better material. They also made it to where wood can't get iron so that you have to use the cobblestone tools. And like Badprenup said, why change something so burned into the minds of Minecrafters. You know cobble is actually stronger than smooth stone anyway, right?. Although I do like this GreyAcumen's idea if you add this:

And as for realism, when has Minecraft been "realistic?" Count the number of floating islands in one biome. How do you get stone out of smelting cobblestone? Fill your inventory entirely with full stacks of the golden apples that are made with gold blocks, along with wearing golden armor, and figure out how dense you are. It will be denser than the sun, yet you can't hold more than two water bottles at once. Minecraft isn't realistic, yet it is one of the best games on the PC/ Xbox/ smart phone or whatever it is on.
Stone Tools, no Cobblestone Tools
It's simples, do the game a little more hard at start and the Tools make by Wooden Planks more used.

You need to smelt the Cobblestone to make the Stone Tools.
