As you may know, in 1.9 they added the leaking water effect. If you're underneath a source of water (or lava), it will leak out the block below it, falling like slow rain.
I thought it would be pretty neat if you could make it work as a water sprinkler for farms. The water would nourish the plants at .75 efficiency of having the crop directly next to a water source. This would make more space for more crops, in turn for slower crop growth to balance it out. The drips would also saturate the tilled soil, but it would also only provide water for the block directly below the drip source.
Perhaps lava drips could also make Nether Warts grow faster, and kill normal crops.
It's a good idea, but what purpose would dripping lava serve in that case? Perhaps a chance to ignite the block under the drip briefly? Not a lot of utility there, but could be useful as a defensive measure.
Rain already helps crops. If you're suggesting rain making the drips, it'd cause the illusion of leaky ceilings in homes - that's something we don't want.
I did not know I helped crops. I'll have to check on that later.
