I think a GPS would be a good item. It will need a 3 by 3 crafting grid to craft.
X means no item there and a name means that goes there.
X Iron Ingot
Compass Iron Ingot Redstone
Map Iron Ingot Iron Ingot
It will work like a map unless you have some communication stations.
You will need 2 communication stations which is crafted like this (Xs mean nothing):
Iron Ingot Iron Ingot X
Iron Ingot Redstone X
Stone Iron Ingot Stone
Communication stations can not get destroyed by explosives, and take 10 seconds to mine with anything. They return a communications station when destroyed.
The GPS can navigate you to a communications station in the game. The map it shows has 1 pixel as 1 chunk. You show as a white dot. Communications stations show as a black dot.

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.
And how would you propose we launch the satellites to USE the GPS? Rockets?
Which would be too futuristic for minecraft so...
I DUN APPROVE.
This.

I think you should re think your idea.
Some people will say that minecraft shouldn't have realistic items, such as a GPS
While others will say that "how can you have a satellite in minecraft?", such as the people above me.
Good job with your first idea, but I think you should give a different idea, or a different alternative.
For example, crafting a map and some redstone together will create a map locator. It will locate any "checkpoints" that are in that designation of the map. It could put a large red dot on every place that has a "checkpoint"
Don't you think that fits more into minecraft?

Too far ahead of minecraft's time. No space tracking devices for the gps means you will have to build and launch it into space using rocket fule which will have to be impleminted and it will make everything hectic, we will have to worry about new metals and fules and just remake how minecraft works just to add this simple ide. We will have to add.... Physssssiiiccccssss

I think you guys have thought wrong. The communication stations communicate with the GPS itself. 0 sattelites/rockets/spacecraft involved.
Then it isn't a GPS.

I have an idea. Instead of a weird gps/sat nav, combine a compass with an iron ingot to make a polarized compass. Then, similar to sticks, you can craft an iron pole. The compass is drawn to this, and will point to the closest one. If the tower isn't big enough, max being 10 blocks, the range isn't big enough. If the compass doesn't have a tower in range, it will freak out similar to it being in the nether.

It seams like it would be another good idea, but I don't fully understand it.
