I don't mean to be an Asshole but..... NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO USE ****ING MODS! :angry.gif:
I agree. I hate using mods. And alternate texture packs for too long a period.
Random fact: IRL, if you smelted sandstone it would turn into metaquartzite. I can't believe I remembered that useless fact.
3. there are presently a finite number of block IDs that can be utilized.
You would be right and wrong. There are limited block IDs but adding a smooth/natural version of sandstone would not take up one. As wool and logs are only one block ID (respectively) they have several skins. Using this method virtually every block in the game can have the ability to have multiple textures applied to them (some of them already use the extra data needed to change texture).
Probabilities:
Natural sandstone
A version of cobblestone that looks like block
Colored glass
variations of smooth stone that represent other types of natural stone.
and many more...
I understand where you are coming from, and how you are directing your post. I personally like sandstone, I think it makes some things look cool. Then again, I use alot of texture packs... so it is for good reason that I like sandstone. I think that having two different types would be neat, though. One should be affected by gravity, and the other not.

One affected by gravity like, say, sand?

I think Mojang AB has much better Ideas to work on (like shooting eachother with NERF guns). I like sandstone the way it is, adding another "smooth" form would make it too much like normal sand, sandstone has the differences so you dont get confused on which is which

Yah, this is actually what I was referring to with my solution above.
We could have a striated block that could serve as sandstone...
...and possibly other materials if it were colored differently. One block ID.
The flagstone-look of the current texture could then be similarly applied to other mined materials.
Sandstone:0 = the current sandstone, using the current textures, which is made by combining 4 sand in the grid, and drops itself when broken.
Sandstone:1 = naturally occurring sandstone, which uses only the current top texture on all 6 faces and drops sandstone:0 when broken. Can be made by smelting sandstone:0.
That is to say, make the new block a damage variant of the current sandstone.
Pros:
Natural sandstone looks natural;
Does not take up a new block ID;
Does not take up any more of the terrain.png;
Gives us another (albeit only slightly different) block to build with, essentially a smooth-faced sandstone.
Cons:
Takes 5 minutes of Notch's time.
I'm surprised that there's so much opposition. Guess notches' time is extremely valuable.
The same reason processed dirt, obsidian, sand, gravel etc. look like the natural kind.
You just proved the OP's point. As dirt, sand and gravel are not...Stone.
And as we all know, you cannot receive drops from stone while mining it by hand, like you can with dirt, sand and gravel.. Obsidian however, only occurs when water meets lava so it doesn't occur as naturally without being "crafted" by the elements, whereas dirt, sand, and gravel are stand alone. So the OP's point is valid and very logical.
Really don't understand why people are ripping on the post (perhaps it's the title?). It's a reasonable suggestion though. Current sandstone does look unnatural.
Four pages in five hours for some silly little suggestion?
It's to small to bother doing. While tile-able sandstone would be nice, having two different kinds is just unneeded.
Why is it unneeded? It would improve the aesthetics of the game and would only take 5 minutes of notchs' time; which most people seem to think is more valuable than gold.
What do you mean by tile-able sandstone?
I'm just as surprised as you that a little suggestion like this would get so much attention.

Tile-able as in if you had a giant wall of them, you couldn't tell the individual blocks from each-other, because each side matched the opposite side of the adjacent block.
As in the right side of one matches up with the left side of the block to the right of the original block.
It's unneeded, because it's an extremely small change to bother working on. Notch should add new things and take out the bugs before dealing with tiny little details.
Care to point me in the direction of this mod benefactor? Don't speak for the community either; some people want to see the game move forward and my suggestion would help add to the realism of the world. Did you even read my suggestion? Of course not.
Its a game. Game+Lots of Realism=Not-so fun game. We have zombies, this isn't meant to be realistic.

WOOT! MORE SHOOTY STUFF!
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens. (Griefing is an art. And a lot of dead creepers.)

Yes but by being a small change it would therefore not take much effort to fix. Notch does little updates similiar to this all the time. Just take the extra five minutes to include it in an update with a bunch of new features. Notch isn't exactly busy.
A dozen of these little changes could mean a big difference in the quality of the game.

Jesus Christ I'm not asking for hunger or thirst or anything else like that. I'm asking for TWO sandstone textures. I don't see how it's possible for you to say "realism is bad lol" about something like this. Again, does anyone read or think logically anymore?

5 pages? This is ridiculous.
