I refer you back to my first post in this thread, and resubmit the following advice:
1. Tidy up and refine your suggestion and post it here, where someone at Mojang might actually see it.
2. Tweet Notch and/or Jeb about it. If I recall correctly, Jeb's the one who implemented sandstone in the first place, so he might be the better choice.
At present, keeping this thread alive isn't really accomplishing anything productive, unless you think the concept could be refined or improved further with feedback. I doubt it could be.
The polls mean nothing. Even if enough people were sampled to be statistically relevant (which isn't the case) a number of forum-goers initially misunderstood what you were getting at or took issue with your title. Consequently, a lot of those 'no' votes may not actually be 'no' votes at all. On top of that, the game isn't developed through democracy. Two individuals are the ultimate arbiters of its design and content, regardless of how many people like or dislike anything.
That said, Jeb and Notch seem like pretty reasonable fellas. "Natural sandstone should look natural" is a pretty reasonable suggestion. "The current sandstone (side)texture doesn't look like naturally occurring sandstone and looks manufactured/man-made" is an objective statement. The developers care about the aesthetics and are willing to change them (it appears cobble's getting a bit of a facelift tweak in 1.7). Changing sandstone wouldn't require a lot of work. It wouldn't have any impact on performance. It would look more natural. It would emphasize locality-specific materials (something they want more of in the game).
All of this leads me to believe that, if the idea were presented to Jeb, he'd probably go along with it.
So what does your proposed "smooth sandstone" (or whatever you chose to call it) add aside from looks? Aesthetics are fine and dandy, but who cares about yet another block if it doesn't serve any other purpose?
The developers care and other people who care about aesthetics care. The goal is clearly to make the Minecraft world echo the natural world in appearance. Hence biomes. Hence different tree types. Hence wild grass.
The current sandstone texture does not follow this design. Is that a big deal? No, I don't think so. But is it aesthetically inconsistent? Absolutely. Do designers care about that sort of thing? Typically, yes.
So far, your suggestion only offers a slightly different look (not really enough to make a difference when building a structure), and has no use outside of this.
The textures were switched out to make a point and to placate those complaining about programming time and existing space for textures.
The fundamental issue is: natural sandstone does not look like natural sandstone, but people like the current block as a building material.
Using the existing underside texture for the whole block is, as far as I'm aware, really just a compromise.
Frankly, I doubt it's one Jeb or Notch would ultimately make.
Myself, I'd go for a striated pattern and use it as a vehicle to bring in some subtle yellow-orange tones. This would bring greater visual depth to desert environments, which are currently lacking in that regard (when compared to other biomes). Sandstone would be to deserts as smooth stone is to mountainous regions.

Put a link in the OP. Now I have a real reason to bring attention to this topic.
I enjoy sadstone the way it is. hen I build my sandsone fortress in an SMP server, people say "Hey, did you see that sandstone cstle over there?" "Yeah, it looks pretty cool"
Sandstone stands out, thats why I like it. And youw ant to ruin that sense of originality for me by ruining the texture. Your textures look Bland, and boring. Nothing stands out.
So, I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to vote a big no on this one :/

Sandstone would still exist it just wouldn't generate in the world. There would be two sandstones. One natural and one man-made. Think cobblestone and smoothstone.
I'm surprised. The OP actually took a rather terrible idea and refined it to a well organized, thought out post with pictures. I personally don't care if they do the whole refined sandstone (FYI it should be called Refined Sandstone instead of Cobble Sandstone, it sounds a lot better imo) but the textures look a lot better,

So.. You just want to make sandstone into tan versions of Cobble and Stone?
Semms pretty silly and pointless imo....

This wouldn't change any of that. Mining sandstone would still give you sandstone the way it looks now, and so it wouldn't change anything except for how it looked before it got mined. Just like cobblestone and smooth stone.
EDIT: Looks like you already got that answered. but as for it being pointless, it would be just as pointless as having colored wool. Having new types of blocks for building adds variety, which is a good thing in a game like minecraft.
No, it really is pointless. I agree with OMFG_Ninjas.
Notch could do much more benificial things than reskin sandstone.
Like add a few new ores, for example.
What your saying doesn't make any sense. This is a little thing that could be added. It would take 5 minutes. Notch has already "wasted" time changing the cobblestone texture.
Yeah and bookcases but people still want it because it looks good. Current sandstone looks terrible which is why I use the photorealism texture pack, because it looks like sandstone should.
Yeah the problem is that when I make sandstone look natural with a texture pack it doesn't look so great in buildings

Notch reskinned cobble because he thought it could be improved. Now, I'm going to stop bumping this pointless thread and let it die.

Just because you don't like idea doesn't make it silly and pointless. More block variation, and a more natural world are better for everyone.
