We all know finding/harvesting flint from gravel is a pain in the ****. However; what if we match up two of the most useless things in Minecraft in order to make our lives simpler?
My suggestion: Gravel and gold. By that, I mean that when you mine gravel with a golden shovel, the rate of flint being dropped from gravel increases severely, maybe to around 1/3 or something. In that way, gravel won't be such a hassle, and golden tools (well, the shovel at least) will have some use.
Thank Notch you didn't mean what I thought you meant.
I thought you meant that by combining gravel and gold, you could get flint when you could easily replace the gravel until you get it that way.
Anyways, It's an okay idea. I support it, but I don't really see much of a point in it.
I think it's quite obvious why he said to use gold: Gold has always been kinda useless, and one thing that would make it more useful would be to make it give a higher chance of returning block-based drops.
No, it doesn't really make sense, and I kind of forgot that gold tools have such limited durability. How 'bout an rate of 3/4? That would give ca. 25 flint per gold, i.e 100 arrows per golden ingot.
It could have been a nice little minor addition for those who aren't into minecart systems, have some spare gold and are in a desperate need of arrows.
Hmm. This idea could be expanded to other golden tools.
Like digging gravel with a golden shovel increases the chance of getting flint.
Maybe cutting leaves off trips with a golden axe would increase the chances of sapplings appearing and then dropping.
Maybe mining stone with a golden pickaxe would give you a small chance at getting regular stone instead of cobblestone.
just a thought. would be a way to make golden tools somewhat unique and have a use. though, if that sort of thing happened then the tools should either give a pretty high chance at getting an item, or the durability should be raised a bit. (at least to be as good as stone or maybe iron)

A very good thought. Very good thought, but it needs development. I don't see additional saplings or regular stone as terribly great incentive; the low durability of gold outweighs.
Hey, at least they're not saying that aspergite is useless again. As to it becoming the most useful item in the game, well, that would make some sense, as it's rather rare.
Why not just simply have it so that you stick gravel in a furnace and create flint? That would be simple enough to add and it could sort of represent you removing the impurities. /shrug
because it would be a waste of gravel. i mean you can just put it down and break it repediatly to get gravel, whereas a furnace destroys the gravel and wastes the coal ect u use to heat it.
btw isnt it just simple enough to use a coblestone shovel ( i say coblestone cuz you will never run out of it, i prefer diamond for speed.) and build a tower of gravel the shovel it down and repeat? you get more flint then you can handle

I thought the point of this was to get more flints? I was just saying that would be a simple way to do it without requiring tons of time doing what you are suggesting. Simply an alternative. Besides, coal is a renewable resource since it can be made from wood and it isn't like it is incredibly rare anyway.

I wouldn't mind gold being relatively useful compared to more common things (it already sort fo is), as long as those uses make sense.

Of course. I wouldn't waste gold for a chance at getting a sappling or something. :]
unless it was a very high amount.
But something could come out of using gold to make it more unique and useful while still having a low durability.

I prefer just hitting and placing until i get some flint.

What about the new rails? What about clocks?
It seems like gold's going to end up being the most useful item in the game at this rate.
