Ive recently started wolf taming, and i think the wolf is an amazing and fantastically fun part of the game. However, i think that something is also missing.
Wolves are pretty stupid, mentally. Try having a walk with your wolf pals into a pit of lava... (i did it on accident, while facing away from the lava and fighting a monster) ... the wolves will jump right in! Additionally, wolves will just sit there while an invading creeper comes toward you.... and DIE in a horrible explosion.
My suggestion: Have wolves be smarter, or better yet have them learn over time.
-Lava should be obvious, its HOT.... even the dumbest of animals stays away from HOT!
-Creepers.... okay so maybe cute doggie doesn't know they EXPLODE and wants to stay by you to protect you from a new guest.... well maybe what could be done here is the dog is stupid and sits there with you at first... and IF he survives the explosion, have him realize that creepers are bad news and either have the dog run away for a while, or attack the creeper. Having the dog dumb at first and learn IF he survives will still punish the player who doesn't see the creeper coming or who doesn't take fast enough action to protect their lovable doggies!
-I also noticed doggies love to follow you in a straight line, even if that means going down steep cliffs when there is a shallow area right next to him. Again, maybe the dog learns over time to take less dangerous paths that are still roughly towards you. (if you take your dog over a place where there's danger of hurt everywhere, that's YOUR fault)
I'm trying to balance these three changes with what is sensible to have in a game and with what will not make dogs over powered. I hope my suggestion has struck a fair balance between the two, and id love to see those dogs get a little more wise than a lemming.
Please comment and share your thoughts. Thank you! :smile.gif:
Good idea. I think dogs should whine, and move away from creepers.
I have had three groups of dogs wiped out by creepers.
If you have dog, you should hear the whine, KNOW there are creepers trying to sneak up on you.
You see where the dogs run, AWAY from creeper, you follow, you are safe. Then you turn around and waste em!
This is a great idea i cant count how many times my dogs have blow up drowned fell in lava and other. Dogs and cats should be able to figure these things out
I absolutely support this. A major problem with tameable mobs right now is that they're so freaking stupid that it's hard to get attached to them or to use them. I love the wolves and cats, but after some traumatic incidents with beloved critters jumping merrily into lava, I now more or less use them as house decoration. What good is a wolf if it just sits in your house and barks?
So yes, I'd love to see wolves get smart about heights and lava, and cats just get smart about lava. It wouldn't just make them more useful, it would make them feel much more natural, and a more enjoyable part of the game. Not to mention, it would encourage more exploration if you could take your wolf pack and your creeper-repelling cats with you without worrying about them killing themselves with stupidity.

And lava baths are just stupid.
