Im sick and tired of fighting off spiders with my fists. Why cant I pick up a hefty rock and split their carapace between the eyes?
Ur-Quan's Suggestion:
1 = 4 rocks (or 9, depending how high the damage is, keep in mind, gravel is common and serves not much use outside flint)
2X spider silk + 1 leather gives a sling.
Could replace the spider silk with wool to make it a low end ranged weapon that does low damage, but the fact it deals ranged damage gives it a good advantage on it's own.

That's inhumane! JK, I find it annoying when people do that. "The zombies are eating us, kill them!" "That's inhumane!"
Gaaaaaaaay! Well anyway, I don't know, sounds like a very good idea though.

Yes you would place 1 cobblestone in your crafting box and voila it turns into 10 rocks
How about 9?
And you should be able to craft it back into cobble stone the same way you make snow with 9 snowballs(it might be 4 snowballs but I haven't found a snow biome yet so...) or wool with 9 pieces of string.
And to make it not overpowered, they shouldn't be stackable. Or, they can be like eggs and only stack up to 16.

If you give them crap damage that'll help too. Keep damage well below arrows and I like it.

Don't fear the creeper, yeah he's in your mine
Don't fear the creeper, happens all the time, don't fear the creeper
I have an alternate suggestion. What about creating rocks from gravel (gives it more use!) And add a sling to throw these rocks/pebbles.
crafting would be like this:
1 = 4 rocks (or 9, depending how high the damage is, keep in mind, gravel is common and serves not much use outside flint)
2X spider silk + 1 leather gives a sling.
Could replace the spider silk with wool to make it a low end ranged weapon that does low damage, but the fact it deals ranged damage gives it a good advantage on it's own.
The idea of throwing rocks makes a lot of sense to me! But alas, i dont think it will happen, because there are already snowballs and arrows. Having another thing to throw would be over complicating the game development. And they cant really take away arrows or snowballs because that would make people angry and not make a lot of sense...
Basically what i'm saying is that THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE...er.. TWO HIGHLANDERS.
(where highlanders= projectiles. Yeah i went there.)
Ur-Quan has the best idea here, but the way he says it also shows why it's a bad idea to begin with. (Yes I'm aware the poster is trolling, but since some are taking this seriously, I'll answer seriously.) valdark compares the rocks to a Bow, and Ur-Quon tells us how it could be done. But Minecraft is a simple game, and there is much more room for expansion in other areas before Notch would start to double back and say "Hmm, we have that Bow thing already with those Arrows, but what if i just wanted one with LOWER DAMAGE?!" and decides to create rocks and a sling. Basically what I'm getting at is: We have a ranged weapon in the game. Yes, it's something you can't just start off with to have for your first scary night. But such is the nature of our wonderful game.
I think cobblestone should be kept as a source for rocks. It's the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking about lobbing a nice heavy rock at a mob. Cobblestone should give you the same throwing rocks as gravel. While cobblestone is more plentiful than gravel, it requires a pickaxe (and generally a longer time) to mine. This balances it out.
Adding throwing rocks does not diminish the snowball's role, as snowballs are meant to do no damage (for harmless fun and shearing sheep.) Rocks should be an inexpensive way to do standard punching damage (and knockback) at a safer distance.
Using a sling should add only .5 hearts of damage to the rock (to keep it below bow and arrow damage) and have a random inaccuracy spread (to further keep it less powerful than the bow.) The sling would (obviously) allow the rock to travel further than by hand.

How about you can use cobble or gravel, but cobble gives you more rocks? This seems like a simple feature, but who knows.

Now were talkin
No duh a bow works idjit. So do snowballs. And hey. Why use cobblestone blocks when we can use wood? hmmm....
Oh shut up...
Good one

Shoulda thought of that before!

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
