I've seen a few posts about people complaining about mobs and the way they work, eg; zombies are too weak while skeletons are too strong. Then there's the post about using flint for tools instead of wood and cobblestone which I'm all for. Well I've taken these things on board and have come up with a few suggestions to overcome these problems.
Firstly do away with mobs dropping items when they burn in the daylight as it does away with combat. Secondly have zombies fight with tools that they drop when killed. Cave zombies have picks while outside spawning zombies carry flint axes, shovels and hoes and attack you with them causing more damage than previously with their hands.
Skeletons still fire arrows at you but have a limited supply from 4-12, depending on the level you are playing at. There should also be a range of arrows within a level [eg:easy 4-6 normal 6-8 hard 8-12] so it doesn't become too obvious when its safe to rush in and take out a skeleton. Any arrows that don't hit you can be collected but disappear within 2 minutes of being fired so you need to circle the area while avoiding arrows being shot at you. When a skeleton runs out of arrows it makes a bee line for you and atacks with its cold boney hands until one of you dies. Dead skeletons only drop bones. This means if you want those arrows you have to play cat and mouse with the skeleton.
Add to this mix a FEMALE ZOMBIE as well who doesn't have a weapon but instead throws flints until she runs out, then attacks like the skeleton. Flints that don't hit you can be collected. Flints not thrown are dropped when she dies. Again the quantity should be based on which level you are playing at and be variable but be less than the arrows example. EG: easy 2-4 normal 4-6 hard 6-8.
This way replacing wood and cobblestone picks & axes with flint and its variables of copper and tin(bronze) becomes more feasable. Also it opens up a new future use for copper & tin as well, to be dealt with in a new thread.
In my opinion unnecessary. Just give the zombies slow destruction abilities and a hive mind AI, and perhaps bump up their health a bit, you have a nice little surprise there. Skeletons are not hard. I get a bow within the first or second day. No need for cat and mouse there, I have a sub-machine bow. However, no burn drops has a point. Support that, not the rest.

I have a sub-machine bow.
Okay, so what's a sub-machine bow? Yea I agree skeletons are fairly easy to take out once you have the bow. They're not that hard without a bow too. I find the easiest way is to head for a tree and dig down one level and when the skeleton comes his arrows are useless. I can cut him down with any sword I'm carrying or even bare handed if I can be bothered hitting him that much. As for zombies, ramping up their endurance is no solution. As it stands now I have fun killing them with a feather. As long as there's only one of them they are useless. Even if they had weapons the way they attack probably wouldn't help them anyway. The idea was to introduce collectible tools in the event wooden and stone picks are phased out and replaced by flint which makes more sense as a wooden pick in reality wouldn't make a dent in a tree let alone stone.
Also its always struck me as odd that arrows the skeleton currently fires cannot be picked up and that it never runs out of them. Besides just because you and I find skeletons easy doesn't mean others do. Minecraft needs to cater to all players abilities if they are to prosper and enjoy their gameplay.
I have a sub-machine bow. It pisses me off when people mangle quotes.

It's always struck me odd that skeletons roam and spiders are gargantuan. It's a game. Limiting arrows would make them too easy. If someone can't kill a skeleton, they need to grow up or switch to peaceful. Also, I'm going to assume you have no idea what hive mind AI means. It means that when one sees, the rest do to. It would allow for swarming. Even you can't take down 12 zombies, especially if you lower knockback on them. Minecraft isn't real life. You can't knock down a tree in real life with your bare hands either. Flint tools are an unnecessary hurdle. It would also increase my massive hoard of stone in large amounts.
Zombies don't hold weapons. They have no brain. They have no intelligence. They are driven by hunger. They will try to overpower you, but will not grab a car and throw it at you, because they are too focused on killing you.

Oh common, those furry little creatures ain't that big are they?
I'm going to assume you have no idea what hive mind AI means.
I do but but 12 swarming zombies that can't be taken down unless you have a sub-machine bow [something I'm still in the dark about] is simply going to send everyone indoors and under the covers of their 'safe' beds.

Ahh so there's your problem. Haven't you been watching those tv shows about hoarders? Not healthy at all.

How true. I was kinda working on the idea though that the zombies are former adventurers who were carrying tools when they became undead. Having no brains they haven't thought to drop whatever they were holding at the time. I would have made a suggestion that only some are holding tools but figured it might involve too much re-programming to work.
OMG! As I write there are zombies on TV,. How kool.
Oh common, those furry little creatures ain't that big are they?
Sigh. You don't get it.

Ah, but that's where the slow destruction comes in. No more safe beds unless your walls are 5 blocks thick! Also, the current bow has an insane amount of fire rate. Just spam right click while holding it. You'll understand.

You completely ignored my criticism of flint tools being useless. And no, I don't watch TV shows about hoarders...

Now that I think of it, you have been rather hypocritical. Saying that buffing its endurance won't do anything, but buffing its attack would. The only point is to be aesthetically pleasing. Not that that matters, considering that they are zombies.

What about stone walls? [NOT a critisism but a genuine enquiry] Would zombies be able to claw their way thru them too? Besides from what I can gather, if you currently position your bed away from walls mobs won't spawn inside. I've read on here if you go to bed as soon as it gets dark mobs won't spawn so you'd be safe. Try leaving something burning in the furnace before you go to bed and hay presto when day breaks its still burning so time doesn't continue as per normal when sleeping. Hopefully you are suggesting this all changes and mobs still continue to spawn and night still continues as normal as it clearly doesn't now.
I've done the rapid bow attack on skeletons. Works a treat and you can go collect the ones that missed afterwards. I just thought you might be using a modded bow as mods seem to be the go around here. Oh to be able to program mods.....
You completely ignored my criticism of flint tools being useless. And no, I don't watch TV shows about hoarders...
I ignored the flint tools critisism because this post was primarily about mobs. But to answer I actually like the idea of using flint tools. Its covered in another thread by someone else so I think discussion on it should belong there. Its titled something like doing away with wood and cobblestone tools. I actually ran 3 new games running on the idea of having to find flint before I could mine or gather wood. I still had to initially punch a tree to get planks and sticks and found his idea was feasable and possible as I succeeded all 3 times in securing flint before making tools etc etc. Most of the objections to using flint seemed to be based on not having enough material to make all the tools required for huge projects. That's why I came up with the idea of flint throwing female zombies and tool carryng male zombies to make a new avenue for flint.
Now that I think of it, you have been rather hypocritical. Saying that buffing its endurance won't do anything, but buffing its attack would.
Okay I didn't mean to come off as hypocritical but buffing up endurance simply requires hitting the zombie more to kill it. If you can easily kill a zombie by hitting it 20 times with a feather then hitting it 5-10 times with a sword is just going to prolong the time it takes to kill it. I don't recall saying that giving them weapons would make them harder to kill although if an armed zombie managed to get a blow or two in it would have a greater effect than an unarmed one. The point in this case was to introduce a new way to get flint tools.
Personally I think your idea of swarming is much better and would require a player to come up with new strategies to deal with them. Have you considered swarming zombies, some with tools?

Who's to say that zombies arent already mixed gender? Why would female zombie even act differently?
Why would we do away with wood and stone tools? Why would flint be any better?
