Someone should edit the OP to make it more like the Aether/New Nether threads, listing all the various "biomes" and putting the pictures of all the new mobs on the front page.
It's more of a maze than a dungeon... But there are dungeons in it too.
Yeah. It's not all dungeon. It's more like a bizarre city, some parts might be very dangerous but most would just be confusing or alien.
It's not really a planned maze in the traditional sense. It's just that randomly generated streets and hallways will naturally have a number of loops, dead ends, odd twists, and other unpredictable things that will make it hard to find your way.
One idea I like is the city being almost entirely randomly generated, but with a few rare predesigned areas randomly inserted. Kind of like dungeons on Earth, except instead of a single room it might be a complex of several rooms. A superdungeon. Those might be planned in advance with pre-designed obstacles, mobs, and traps, but where they would appear in Mazeworld would still be random.

I'd love to add some, if any artists out there want to take a shot at drawing concept art. Or if anyone can find good art that already exists. My artistic skill kind of stops at the transparent cube sadly.
It'd be cool if someone started a server where people could work together to manually build a Mazeworld, y'know, in the meantime...
Yeah, that would be fun. A lot of work though! Even if you only create a small area. You'd have to carve rooms through the entirety of the underground and build everywhere on the surface too. I guess if you were building it manually you might not delve too far underground to save time.
OK Mazeworld is now up and running on the server in my sig. There is a stargate at spawn. To get to mazeworld hit the top lever then type /dial Mazeworld
Once there you will find a double chest of diamond picks and one of diamond spades to ease construction until you can be opped.
You can speed up digging by using Runecraft patterns. See the Runecraft wiki for a list of runes.
Use dirt and cobblestone for primary building. I will be putting together a custom texture pack to alter these to Mazeworld style blocks.
Use wood planks as "bone" block.
Dirt will be a metal texture with Grass being a rusty metal.
Cobblestone will be made into a marble like texture and smooth stone into another.
I will most likely make textures for the wool blocks as well but have not yet determined what they should be.
Please feel free to post any ideas for the custom block textures so that we can come up with a look that is satisfactory for all involved.
I want to also note that the subworld for constructing Mazeworld on my server is damage and mob-free. There is no water or lava flow and fire will not spread.
This is all to ease construction.

I think Mazeworld shouldn't have regular mobs, but wherever buildings with treasure are, there would also be unique boss mobs depending on the architecture of that city section. Anything Greek would have a Minotaur, just for example.
They would be hard to kill but you can access chest in the building they spawn.
Also, Mazeworld buildings should be hug and majestic, and tower over the city. They should be massive spires, regardless of the architecture. I imagine Mazeworld to be some huge, empty, Lovecraftian styled place with unique buidling, mobs, and near impossible architecture. Beautiful fountains and majestic trees in some areas, while others have cold, dead displays, the trees and life turned to sand.
There should also be unique treasure here. I can't think of anything now, but I think I'll let others decide.
Edit: Also send this to Notch, or Jeb because he'll probably listen to this idea.

My personal take on this is it would be sort of a "minigame" in minecraft....
Personally, notch has said that we WILL add a sky realm (http://notch.tumblr.com/) and THAT will be truly amazing, the bridges would have to be manmade and such. But mazes, really? ill mine through the wall, jump over the roof, or dig underneath.
a world of bedrock you say, why, that's insain, it would look ugly, server no innital perposes besides wandering countlessly through it for a reward like diamonds, personally, i would ratyher dig around
The castles and plazas and underground walkways was a great idea, but there was talk of ruins in the aether.
i also think theres tons of mods that actually add ruins... (mc dungeon) and countless others...
and a whole new realm?your off your knocker if you think a realm of mazes and temples is enough...
Personally, i would love to see ruins in the overworld in minecraft, just as you described them, it adds a scence of "everyone who lived here was dead"
personally, the "mazes" and temples would be a great addition to adventure mode, huge obsidian labyrinthines with lava above them would be a nice touch, same with the ruins
Cool idea, I support but I don't thing it will be added maybe a mod?
And couldn't players build a ladder to walk on the walls and stuff like that?
Any way awesome idea, diamond for you!

Sure if they can find enough wood. But there would be no forests, no dirt to plant saplings, no water to irrigate crops.
Not all of Mazeworld would be open to the sky, there would be twisting underground corridors and interlocking sky bridges, towering buildings with no sun, moon, or compass that could guide you.

I'm in the process of making a few of the districts of Mazeworld in minecraft SSP. Like, I'm using a flatgrass map, making 23x23 squares of smoothstone, and putting a portion of a district in each one. I've made the Sprawl, an aqueduct, and the Catacombs and have WIPs of Ghost Town, Cityscape, and Mine District, although I plan on doing all of them if I can. I'll post a video when I get to a point where it's presentable.
I'm using sandstone as a stand-in for bone blocks, and I'm also using a mod that adds marble, granite, and a few other blocks so I can achieve the wanted asthetic effect.
Also, for the underground districts, it's not a square of smoothstone that it's on, it's just a little sample I made inside the ground, with the entrance being what I think an entrance to a Mine district would look like.
Now if I could only get those darn squids out of my aqueduct...
You invade this world claiming it as your own simply by your presence.
You slaughter animals for their hides and flesh.
You destroy the landscape and gouge out the earth to build your monuments to vanity.
And yet you call me monster.

Also set a section near the gate to show default maze height of approx 32 blocks... everything above this should be buildings.
