Ok i personally do NOT agree with the plan for lanterns in the fact that torches will no longer stay lit. i discussed it with my mates and they also highly disagree. I think lanterns should be a light source that you can turn off and on with a right click, and can also be turned on with ot without redstone, like a door. this would also make it possible to have nature redstone powered spawners in a sense. if you want monsters, you turn it off from a safe distance and if you don't, you just turn on the lanp; or the oposite with a pig spawner.
Having to relight torches would make survival mode very frustrating and much more difficult. any thoughts?
Wait 'till pistons come out, and then go to the Nether and make glowstone blocks... add some minecraftian creativity and *POOF*. Redstone powered lighting.

glowstone doesnt turn off and on. and besides. people on the server i run play survival mode. i know i would be extremely frustrated if my torches didnt stay lit. thats the main thing that bothers me. the torches not staying lit.

With the addition of the lantern, Torches will flicker out and must be relit with the Flint and Steel. The lantern will serve as a permanent source of light. According to Notch when the update occurs, ALL torches placed on the map, in the inventory, and in Chests prior to the update will be converted to lanterns. To do this, the lanterns will use the (former) block ID of torches along with a re-skin.
Notch said that already crafted or placed torches will be replaced with lanterns.
im aware, but what if you need more? or what if you start a new map? all of those are gone. people who want a proper light soarce will be stuck on the same map forever because they dont want to go and relight torches in a new world

Pistons will move the glowstone back and forth so you could hide the glowstone, and then hit a lever and the piston retracts... revealing the light.
Well if the lanterns implemented adhere to the original plans then all torches placed will be turned into lanterns, problem solved. I think people need to trust Notch a bit more, he knows what he's doing.
Yes! Of course! As long as it's only other people that are negatively impacted it's not a bad idea! Why didn't I see it before!!!ONE![/sarcasm]
Seriously though, now I hope (should torches be changed as indicated) that Mossy and normal Cobblestone get converted to the same ID right around the same time and invalidate all the old maps.
No. Really. Honestly think for a minute. Forget completely about the ID change. Temporary torches will make even the lowest difficulties unnecessarily hard. If Notch does it, then Lanterns had best be very easy to produce, or else it needs to come with a way to make a mob-repelling block of a different kind, because it will drive new players away in droves.
I fully support lanterns being implemented in a way that isn't commercial suicide!
I am one of the persons that like the idea of flikering torches (It makes sense since I support realism in Minecraft)
and I don't think Notch really cares what we think, it's his game
Stop Whinning, oh lanterns need to be able to be massed produced ? no, I don't think they really do, my suggestion for a lantern had 6 Iron, or course, I can switch it to 2, would that be enough for you?
TL ; DR ?
I Support Temporary Torches, Idc what you think

Maybe you're right. Maybe Notch has enough money. Maybe he can afford to pay all his employees off, let them go, and still be set for life. Or, maybe he'd like to have new users buy Minecraft, and not have the whole project tank because only anyone who was playing the game before the lantern update enjoys it. I'm inclined to think the later, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Notch really doesn't care about people paying him money and is willing to screw with important matters of game balance on a whim. Like you said, it's his game. I don't have to play it...and there are other games like it out there. Some of them free. Just saying.

That is the dumbest argument ever. I am sorry. But making torches go out will not, in any way, make new players turn away. If they did go out, the it would be after quite a while, say, 4-8 days. At that point, new players have a base and mine. Even once their new torches do go out, they must have at least one iron and flint at this time. They carry it with them for a day, and re-light all of the torches that are near. They repeat this cycle once or twice, and eventually get to the nether. They find a clump of glowstone that holds maybe 22 blocks, and collect it for around 66 glowstone. That's more then a full stack! They place these throughout their base, and never think about them again.
It would not make the game overly difficult. It would make it a little difficult in the first place, as right now, it is not.

well truthfully i think that torches should flicker and disappear, but to make it fair the torch recipe should put out eight torches instead of four to counteract their ineffectiveness, and when you think about it this would only be mildly annoying until you hit lava, after which you make a portal. stack a chest full with glowstone and netherrack, and then you never have to worry about lighting again (considering you have a flint and steel for the netherrack.) well those are my two cents.
Having to relight torches would make survival mode very frustrating and much more difficult. any thoughts?
