Searched it, didn't find anything like my idea...
Hopefully I'm not one weird guy and only I will like this, but for keeping animals from despawning/walking away from a spot, we can introduce a new item: Leashes. There would potentially be two types. One for sticking into the ground as a non-solid block and attaching to mobs, and ones for holding in your hand for pulling along a mob.
Crafting:
Crafting is really simple. Basically, the leash would be composed of a hook/stake , string, and a stick.
Function:
This would be good for keeping animals in one place, and one leash would hold up to 3 animals. I'm not even going to try to whip up an awful pixel, so... yeah... ANYHOW - You would craft it, and bring it to your inventory, place it on the ground, and right click it. A 'string' will appear, attached to your hand, like a fishing rod. You walk over to any mob, right click it, and the string would now be attached to the mob, as a fishing rod. The mob would be pulled toward the stake in the ground, within about 5-6 blocks, then the string goes slack and the mob can walk freely within that area, so long as the string allows. That mob will also not despawn once attached. Good for chickens and egg farming. If a mob falls off an edge and falls farther than what the string allows, it will hang and begin to love health.
Function:
Works very similarly to a fishing rod. The only differences are that it is very short ranged (about 2-3 blocks short straight), it can't catch fish, and it pulls the animal toward you, depending on how you adjust it. It also doesn't yank the mob towards you when you pull it back in. Possible ways to adjust the length are:
Z and X keys (or other keys)
I got nothing else.
Anyway, this could be used for pulling mobs toward the spot where you will attach them to your other leashes.

Chickneys are friends, not food. Same with pigs and cows. Not zombies though.

Ah, I knew I forgot something.

I suppose it could be make of sticks or wood or something else, this is kind of a rough outline for an idea that will probably never be implemented.
