How to get:
Not connected to the ocean. Water that wasn't touching any sand when the world was generated. Rainwater that collected in small holes.
Uses:
To wash a bucket before you can put milk in it (if the last time you used the bucket it touched saltwater or lava). To make stew. To water your crops.
(I'm sure there are a couple more reasons to have freshwater, especially if he adds other recipes that call for it.)
Contaminating freshwater:
If you put a sandblock into or touching freshwater, it becomes "stalewater", you can still use it for crops, but not recipes or cleaning buckets for cooking. If you clean a bucket that had saltwater or lava in it before, then dump the water back into the freshwater source.
Cleaning Seawater:
You can distill it with a distil, make it like this:
[]
[] []
You right click that and a screen pops up, when you put a bucket of saltwater into it, it cleans the saltwater, but you need a fresh bucket to take the water out, otherwise using the bucket again will turn it into stalewater, because the bucket just touched saltwater.
Or if you want to decant saltwater into stalewater for crops: You need 2 buckets, Put the bucket with the saltwater into a furnace, then after its done, pour it into the other bucket, you will pour all but the sediment at the bottom, removing most, but not all, of the salt, then its usable for crops, after it cools.
I know it sounds complicated. But this is supposed to be some sort of survival, and in the wild, fresh water is an important asset. You cant drink saltwater, and plants wont grow in saltwater, or at least wheat isnt a saltwater plant.
(And as a side-idea, how about adding seaweed, you have to swim in the ocean for it, but you can dry it and it heals a little hp, or make it into a soup and it heals more hp.)
I remember this annoyed me the first time I played, how I could grow crops next to the ocean. Saltwater could be distinguishable by having a lighter texture. It's a good idea, but I think it would be too hard to implement it in a practical manner.
What if they just made it so there where springs and rivers. So springs, rivers, and ponds would give you fresh water (when collected) and the ocean would give you salt water. Because in reality, you can just as easily find fresh water as you can salt water, depending on where you are. I don't see a reason to turn it into "stalewater", as freshwater beaches exist, and rivers run into the ocean.

well. i guess it would be simpler to remove my filtering and stalewater ideas. but the fresh/salt water would be a good idea. a "lighter color" as he said would work just fine.
but i dont know how to actually submit this idea, ill search the forums, so noone has to tell me to go "search the forms".
Or make a better farm. Possibly a green house with shelves.

Basically I do not like this 'Saltwater' idea, because it'll just make the game too complicated.
There are 3 different types of trees... So how is 2 types of water too much? I will admit the difficulty of splitting the water types would take awhile to code, (i can code some, and it sounds like hours of code-monkey work to me) but as far as complicated, its as easy as going and looking for it, everyone has seen a freshwater supply, they just had no reason to pick it over the seawater... and if you cant find the sea, something is very wrong xD.
but im bored with this topic, ill just collect "fresh" water for my farms/cooking... even if i dont have to, it makes me feel special :wub.gif: xDD
Sorry it's kind of confusing. For the distill you'll need two buckets? Otherwise the purified saltwater will turn to stale water cause the bucket touched salt water?

Shame really, it took me forever to find a previous post that focus on presenting a difference between the water we find in the ocean (salt water) and water found inland (fresh water).
While a lot of the cleaning bit was convoluted, I support the idea of saltwater not being usable for growing crops.
In fact, neutral mobs should only spawn lakes of fresh water.
I have several other thoughts on this topic, but if the OP isn’t willing to continue, I’ll create a new tread later (since they need to be updated)
