May 6, 2011 2:02 am GMT -12 I had this idea for an adventure sort of mode in Minecraft. Basically, the goal is to reach space. Throughout the mode, there are 4 technological ages.
-Stone Age: Only the basic tools are craftable. You aren't stuck in this age for too long however.
-Iron Age: By building a furnace, which now requires more stone to make, you advance to this age.
-Industrial Age: The industrial Age is reached by discovering a mineshaft. You can start building mine carts, steam engines, steam boats, "harbors" and "garages" in this age.
-Aerospace Age: To reach this age, a map must first be pieced together. After piecing the map together, you have to travel using a steam boat, to a distant island where a ruined city lies. There, you can find the blue prints necessary to advance to this age. The Aerospace Age allows the refinement of jet fuel, and eventually, after collecting enough resources, space travel.
Space travel would allow players to explore their world's moon. However, it would also function as a method to travel to friends' worlds, which would populate your solar system.
The various technological ages would also bring their own unique machinery. For example, by delving deeper into the Industrial Age (experimenting with various new recipes that "harbors" and "garages" would allow), players would eventually discover how to build automated drills. Minecart systems could then be created to collect the resources mined by the drills.
I think a more comprehensive tech tree would benefit Minecraft; adding a concurrent, yet ultimate goal.
I though it was a pretty good idea. What do you think about it?
(If something like this was already posted, I didn't actually write it.)
TL;DR: A Spore and Minecraft mix with multiplayer functions.
I love Spore. It is an awesome game.
I also love Minecraft. It is also an awesome game.
HOWEVER! Combining two awesome things doesn't make an even better thing! In this case, it would be crap. Literally. You can't prevent people from making things that they have the materials for, just because they haven't reached the proper age.
Plus, what would happen if I find a mineshaft before I make a furnace? Do I instantly get to the Industrial Age? Do I stay in the Stone Age? What?
And this Industrial Age requires you to have several new things added to the game. None of which have any basis yet, so it would take a lot of work.
The Aerospace Age is laughable. Piece a map together eh? Where/how do you get those Map Fragments anyways?
Once done, how do you READ the map? Also, what prevents you from finding the foreing city just by exploring, without having the map? And, when you get to those ruined cities, you find blueprints... Okay. Why can't you just skip this part and make Blueprint Fragments instead? Would save a lot of time.
Plus, this whole exploring other worlds thing is unclear. Do you mean it would make you appear in your friend's world, as if it was a multiplayer server? If so, how the hell will your computer be able to know what your friend has done as far as modifications go to his map?
And, if that's how things work, how can you prevent griefers from visiting your own world and destroying your creations? This hasn't been thought through, and space-related ideas are some of the most frown upon ones on this forum.
I fail to see where the adventure is in this idea.
All I see is another request that we eventually be able to travel into space via some convoluted system with no ties to the current Minecraft world. And once again, actually arriving in space gives you nothing different - it just allows you to go to other worlds that are just the same as the one you left.
I'd rather just be able to build portals to those other players' worlds directly. Like is currently planned by Mojang last I heard.
Exactly, except the stuff about Spore being fun. I followed that game before launch and preordered it. The day it released I had it. 1.5 hours after installing it I had gotten to Space on both a good and evil file and all I could think was, "That was it?" All I could do after that was terraform planets (which takes about 10 minutes) or do lame "Go to Planet X and get me 3 Y." quests forever.
Plus all the hype about the evolution part being so realistic and advanced was crap. The whole point of evolution is to make what you need and discard what you don't over millions of years. Most creatures made were so far against the rule it's laughable.
My ranting about Spore aside, at least someone did this to make it worthwhile:
/endrant
As for this idea, the ONLY game that has done this well was Civilization and that game was only about that. Not only was it basically nothing else, but it took FOREVER to get there. Like hours on the old versions.

P.S. Be prepared for the anti-spore people.
