QTF, we have all the tools already. World edit, mob spawners and despawning commands. Hell, a server op can do this as a server event already. You just need a few tweeks.
I could also try the story, if you want. Fun dramatic fun. In the story, would you want the person to succede? or die? or sacrifice themselves to save the rest of the world from the minepocalypse?
Make 4 people survive.
And if you can manage, make everyone here in it! Their names will be warped at your will. They act like they act here (You as helping hand to me, some dudes wanting it as a mod being those who want to end the Minepocalypse in another way, others loyally following my idea, which in story terms means helping me win against the Minepocalypse the way I wrote it, people who don't like the idea being the ones who will betray (actually I counted one..)
You see where I'm getting at?

This is a really sick idea. Mod or mode- I'd absolutely love to see it take effect someway or another!
I've mentioned this to my friends and we're all ready to smash that idol in the Minepocalypse :wink.gif:
And I'll be the cheesy person to bare the banner as well! A wicked survival run this would be!

Maybe the Idol could be found in an Indiana Jones-styled Dungeon? You know, with the traps and everything.
Nope.
Why not? It would be really cool to venture through a dark dungeon while dodging arrows shooting out from walls and hidden TNT that explodes when you step on a pressure plate.
If your support for this disappears when I reply this to you, I am sorry I lost a supporter.
No.
Why? Because..
YOU CAN USE THIS IDEA to be your unique thread (which I will support) about some super dungeons! I won't take this idea of yours. Simply can't.

This would be an epic mod, though.

Let's review what you have said.
Minecraft is a game. Mods are tweaks to the game. So you are asking to tweak a bunch of pictures and text into a bunch of other mods? That would suck. Since none of the mentioned text is code thus cannot be tweaked into one of the other mods. Another, it will render it unoriginal. Server Event so be it. Did I force it down your throat?
If that came out sharper than expected then sorry.

Im not sure this is what notch meant when he said late game goal :/
Me too though this is for suggesting whast the late-game goal could be.
Oh and poll and technical page will undergo some work so re-poll your poll and look at the Technical Page!
It implies one. That idol had to come from somewhere, and those four "horsemen" obviously have some cosmic significance...
You made your own backstory.
I can think the idol was a signal to summon alien creatures with weapons of death and confusion.
I can think the idol is an incarnation of Pandora's Box.
I can think Notch made the idol to sustain a world of happiness.
Fair enough. Still, I wouldn't like the idea of happening upon something that sends my world spiraling out of my control, but then again, I could just not touch it, or maybe encase it in smoothstone for protection and leave it alone.

It also gives you motivation to hollow out a huge sphere underground and place the idol in some protective layers of traps, wolves, defenses and of course instant death upon destroying it.

But what if I don't want to fret over an inanimate object? Happening upon this thing and having to take care of it under pain of universal chaos kinda takes away the freedom of sandbox. I rule my world, and I alone, not some random statue I found in a cave or the four beings summoned by its destruction.

do the ores that have turned to stone turn back when the suffering is over? it would mean players have to generate new chunks just to rebuild, and thats after surviving the horrible fate that breaking the idol began

Official, no. It is whatever you want it to be; that's what's cool about it.

Place it in a chest and leave it be.
and bury the chest 3 blocks deep in smoothstone :happy.gif:
Make a house, dig your floor, place chest, forget about it.
That is solved WHILE in the Minepcalypse.
Surviving Chalize gives goodies :biggrin.gif:
