I often build factories in minecraft and lack only the grey or white or black smoke pouring from the chimneys.
solution: dyed netherack produces the colour of smoke cloud you desire. Edit: recipe will involve wool, probably combined with netherack.
Smoke cloud would be similar to clouds, though smaller in width, would rise up a few blocks from source, follow in the same direction of other clouds, and then would break up at a predetermined distance (that varies slightly?) from the source. They would be the colour of the dye mixed with the stone. Edit: Smoke cloud will rise upwards only. Source is Tinderblock, crafted by combining wool (dyed for coloured smoke, white wool for white smoke) and netherack
Not sure how it would act underground. Clouds generally pass through solid blocks so the same could happen here.
Good idea. I think smoke should only rise upwards though.
You could make awesome wizard lairs and nightclubs or whatever with colored smoke. And you could use white/grey dye if you wanted your smoke to look realistic.

I agree, smoke rising up then disapating would make more sense.
So far, only wool can be dyed, but it's still flammable (as far as I know), so this concept could work that way, too, albeit temporarily.
I thought of that, but wanted a permanent smoke source (or, at least a long burning smoke source). Other option was soaking the wool in some substance which would need to be added to game i.e. wax. The dye exists already, and so does the netherack, so that made the most sense to me.
If the source was wool and dye, and lasted one day roughly, that would be alright.

Perhaps the recipe could be colored wool block + netherrack = tinder block.

I know it seems too small but don't torches give enough smoke for the impression of something burning? Also I can't remember but do burning logs give smoke?
They give of a small amount of smoke, and so does burning netherack, but not enough to create a smoke cloud.
Okay that's fine, what I would want which could satisfy you as well is that furnaces, torches and burning object release smoke which in turn blocks out light where it is and it should rise to the highest blocks above it, it would work like water but have no collectible source block and the source block(s) would be used up if it finds a way up onto another block and uses the whole of it's 'density' to do so like how light works. It would affect your visual just and darkness does in the game and it could only be gotten rid of if it gets to the highest altitude which would essentially delete the blocks.
It would make it more of a thing to have an open chimney where you are using a furnace or torches and the thickest layers of this 'smog' should deplete hearts as much as drowning or half of it.
Yes! A reason for chiminineys! Im not a hundred percent sure about losing health, but it makes sense. Could affect neutral and passive mobs, creepers and spiders. Skeletons, zombies and zombie pigmen are not affected.
Not sure if ties in with coloured smoke exactly but I like the idea.
No, but various dyes and chemicals burn in particular ways. Maybe soaking wool in tree sap? I saw a number of sap suggestions, but this would definitely give them a use (pitch has been used to length burning duration forever and a day).
To some degree I don't really care too much what recipe is used, at the time I first posted this I suggested dyed netherack because we have dyes and we have netherack (which I imagine is porous and would soak up the dye, though it might need to use multiple dyes to completely imbue it).
Then combining wool and netherack was suggested (here I could imagine that netherack contains some oily substance which allows it to burn for a long time, and that this substance would get transposed to the wool in the process of combining the two). I think this idea is just as valid and opens up some more use for wool (punch those damn sheep!!!).
The problem with the combining wool with a new substance is that, well, that substance then has to be created (not likely, though it is unlikely this idea will happen anyway so maybe that doesn't matter). If that was the case I would prefer something like wax, which would also involve bee farming (and flower farming (and would involve finding a nest and moving that to a suitable location, all part of creating enjoyable tasks to prolong the game)).
I don't know how to mod, but that might be the way to go.

And after longer use you don`t get white clouds but greyish only :biggrin.gif:
It would be cool for colered wool, because it starts white, which can change color easily.( Easter egg dyeing? Egss are white) But Netherrack is red. This would be cool but has no purpose.

Let's suffice to say I don't think using frickin flint and steel is going to light moss on fire...
This isn't the best idea. I color a rock and it makes pink fumes. No.
Yeah because different chemicals giving off different colored smoke makes no sense. Oh wait...

Simple and the name for the block is good.

You actually can dye rocks, depending on what it is. You could also view this as just painting the rock, or coating it with a special material.

Yes. Black for factories, multi colors for freakish laboratories.

Don't make pink netherrack? xD

I can see black, Light Grey Smoke but Blue, Red, or any other color is just wierd. I put pink as an example.
