I had a crazy idea...but it just might be worth something.
Perhaps Notch could add a little tweak that would allow you to rename certain items, such as tools and the like. So you could name a sword after you or label your pickaxes. This would be more useful/fun in SMP or on Adventure Maps for novelty value. Or to perform lulzy scams on noobs in SMP. Whatever the case, I think it would be fun and make MC just that more personal to me able to rename certain items.
Sword of Blaze
Obsidian Pick/Regular Pick
Fighting Axe/Chopping Axe
Longbow of Blaze
BB Stick (As opposed to regular sticks in the inventory)
Dungeon Diamond
Of course this would be purely aesthetic, but I still think it'd be a nice, unique thing to add.
You're not going to win any favors by encouraging scamming people.
Now I would be for the idea of renaming items (example: be able to change 'diamond' to 'mythril') to appeal to all the pedants out there but I think you can do just that by tinkering with the game's files (don't know how to do that). But no to your idea.

Minecraft. The game where you can have fun building things, but only if you have fun like everyone else.*
I asked for C&C (Comments and Criticism), not for your one-sentence, immature spew.
Now I'm becoming passionate about this idea. People could use this more for lore-based reasons, such as renaming a book "Wizard's Book" on adventure maps. Or perhaps one must find all the pieces of a map? The papers could all be labeled accordingly in an adventure map. As I stated above, one could organize their pickaxes (I do this, anyways) and keep a separate pick for obsidian while another is reserved for regular mining. Or instead of having a "Gold Sword" it could be renamed "Holy Sword" and cherished when you finally kill the player who used to wield it.

Food for thought.
