I came up with an idea (after asked what Notch might do for adding actual Chainmail armor) and decided to join these forums to tell you all and get some feedback.
So basically the idea is that you craft an item which shreds minerals you put in it.
To craft it is:
Where cobble is cobble and stick is sword. The sword determines shredding speed.
When any mineral is put in this, after a certain waiting period (about a the same time as smelting one item time, but it varies based on sword type), a shredded version of the mineral comes out. You get one [MINERAL NAME] Shreds per one mineral shredded.
So what can you do with these?:
Iron Uses:
Chainmail-Use 4 Iron Shreds in a square to make one chainmail. Then, after making your chainmail, craft it in the shapes of armor like any other durability armor. (Too expensive?)
Gold Uses:
Golden Cake-Put a Golden Shreds and a cake into the crafting area and you get a Golden Cake (tentative item name). This makes the normal look of cake have golden flakes on it (since you can have edible gold in small amounts) and heals 2 (tentative heal amount) per slice now.

Have other uses and ideas for the Shredder?
Don't understand something?
Feel free to ask and say all questions and comments about this suggestion here!
Very good ideas. I would like to finally have chain mail that you wouldn't have to hack to get. I have one question about the armor. What would its durability be?

Hm, considering I just calculated a very large and expensive number of iron in my head for a full set, it would have to be either very high, or one shred refines (by simply putting in crafting area) into one chainmail.
Notch could add in a something else for iron bars.
My idea is thus: If you put an iron bar into a furnace and cook it again, it turns into a heated iron bar. You could then put it into a crafting bench and get an iron link from it (1 per bar). Then, craft them in the same way that you make other armour.
It would have the same durability as iron armour. Maybe a bit less, because it's got open holes and junk in it.
I think it would be nice if you could do this to gold bars also, but you don't have to put that in. :tongue.gif:

Let's suffice to say I don't think using frickin flint and steel is going to light moss on fire...

Iron ingots are hammered into thick wire for chainmail.
Iron shredder, lol. Steel wool.
Hmm, yeah. :/
But what could notch add for us to make wire?
