I like this. It may not be a major change that makes SMP all that much better, but its not a stupid idea, either, and I could definitely see on friendly servers people using it to help each other out.

Wow, that's some epic tardflailing about being able to get mail in your local game from someone else. I'd blame Asperger's, but a simple lack of actual thought is more likely.
Because it's useless bar the powered tracks. The only other crafting recipies are armor and tools (which look like butter and, frankly, have the same applications as butter), and golden apples, which just aren't worth 72 gold ingots.
Gold is useless? Who could have guessed that? Oh yeah, REALITY.

Do you show children your phallus? Is that what you want them to see?
I Support this, since In game mail is essentially a staple in MMO games and while MC is as much single player if not more so than it is SMP, It is something that I would love to see added to SMP.
It would be awesome to be able to leave messages for people.
Since the Maps seems to be something that Notch suggested might have code applications that could extend into sharing custom artwork and writing books in MC. I really think Mailboxes would be feasible, in the near future without huge amounts of dedicated code overhead.
Suggested Tweaks:
1. The Mailbox. The recipe should be changed to

Where is red dye.
They should have an email-like interface with inbox, outbox and a place where you put the letter to send.
2. The Letters. Letters should be opened with a right-click(to write them), and placed in the mailbox as mentioned above.
3. Solution for singleplayer. Remove the limited-to-one-mailbox thing. Now you can send stuff between your houses. This would require each mailbox to have a unique ID to send the mail to, just as you need to have an address in real life. It also solves the problem with griefing, because you would have to tell the griefer your mailbox idea for the griefer to mailgrief you.

who cares? i'd take both there babies and throw them down a cliff if it means this mod will happen faster
How about this? You get an inbox/outbox. The mailbox is the only way to access the in/outbox. Griefing would be pointless because the contents won't spill out as they are only access points to your mail. Mailbox could also have the creator's name to identify who it belongs to. As for SSP, how about mailboxes filled with random letters and gifts from Mojang (which are triggered by events and updates)?

Minecraft. The game where you can have fun building things, but only if you have fun like everyone else.*
Here's the only problem with this epic suggestion: You+Ally on SMP server. You go to SSP, and use an inventory editor to get a bunch of stuff. Then, you mail your friend a stack of Diamond Blocks, four stacks of TNT, 2 stacks of lava, and 3 cakes. It also needs a contact list, that you can write names down in.
So is Pokemon, but it still lets you interact with other players over the internet. This isn't really that different.
Then it's not single-player, is it? Particularly considering that game FORCES interaction for completion.
Really? Are you even getting the concept of this idea?
It's not like you NEED to make a mail box, or you NEED to mail anything. It's just a convenient way to...
A. Transfer items between your SSP worlds and SMP servers.
B. Send another player who either plays SSP or another SMP server messages and/or items.
C. Send players who don't live close by in your server items.
Optional interaction over the internet isn't multi-player, it's simply optional interaction over the internet. Are two people playing with each other? No. They are simply interacting. With your logic that's like saying MSN is multi-player, or the internet
Honestly, this is a great idea. I think this should be brought to the attention of Notch and added in an update in the near future.
I've seen mail setups in SMP before, just with chests and signs to create a rudimentary post office, but this is much more unified and fits into SSP as well.
And it's not like you have to use it. If you don't like it, don't build a mailbox.

This concept is pretty damn awesome, in any case.
Why?

It would be a good way to send messages for vanila servers.

The mailing system you explained has nothing to do with snails 0_0
I however LOVE this idea and would be very happy if this is added.
Well, you woulden't be able to mail cross-server.
Feel the same, it would make a house just look more homey. I love it as well.
