The jump between the little icon saplings, much larger trees can be disconcerting, and it would be nice to see a little bit more variety in the tree sizes in the forests. Small Trees could fill that gap.
With enough light and time, a small tree would pop into a full grown tree. If you cut down a small tree trunk you get sticks. Ideally the trunks would match the texture of the full sized tree -- not shown in this hacked together image.
And for those that want to decorate their Castle/Palace/Fortress with small trees that won't grow up, an additional rule could be added: Small Trees wouldn't grow into Full-size Trees unless there was more than 1 block of dirt or grass directly beneath them. See this topic for a more developed form of this idea.
I did search a couple weeks ago when i first though of this. Most topics on three growth wanted some sort of continuous growth. I don't claim this is totally original, but i did provide a graphic.

We have 3 types of trees, of which each of them can come in 3 different varieties. why do we need such small trees, which only drop sticks and are pretty useless and also in your way, when you go through the woods.
* It's mostly an aesthetic improvement, like the existence of 3 kinds of trees in the first place-- it makes the world seem more alive and varied.
* If you just want sticks, it's quicker to chop down a small tree
* They wouldn't grow in the shadow of other trees, they need more light, so shouldn't be an overwhelming obstacle.
* When in an area with planted trees, i find it sometimes disorienting when the whole landscape changes when my back was turned when several trees pop into big ones

So when you grow trees it goes:
Sapling -> Small Tree -> Full Tree?=
So when you grow trees it goes:
Sapling -> Small Tree -> Full Tree?=
That's the idea.
It would only be good, if they grow really fast. I don't want to wait another 5 minutes for my trees to grow. That would be pretty annoying.
Tree growing time is very random. But i agree, the growth time of the big (normal) trees should be adjusted so the addition of small trees doesn't make the whole process take longer on average.
i agree that Small Trees would be a good addition, if only for the variance. I'd say that each "trunk" section should drop about 2 planks, instead of log blocks.
I also think they should be able to get up around 5-6 blocks tall.
The one problem I see stemming from this (pun unintended) is that there would need to be a way for the tree to recognize damage, and to what extent, and have that effect how the small tree will grow into large tree.
After all, if you break the middle log out of a small tree, it shouldn't just keep growing into a large tree, the same should be true if you completely deleaf the tree.
Perhaps some formula could be used by taking the number of small logs still present, and the number of leaf block still present to determine how many logs and leafs the resulting full tree will have. If you break off 90% of the leaf blocks, then the resulting tree wont have many leaf blocks, and wont grow as many log blocks as it could have if you had left it alone.
I'd say that each "trunk" section should drop about 2 planks, instead of log blocks.
Don't you think stick(s) would make more sense?

Does that include leaf blocks, or just the trunk?

Hmm, good point-- i hadn't thought of that.
I expect that leaf blocks have no "ownership" so that there's really no way to determine how many leaf blocks a tree retains when it is adjacent to another tree. What you suggest is cool, but i don't think it absolutely needs to be that involved. Some kinds of trees are very hardy, IRL i cut the saplings to the ground a couple times a year and they keep coming back until i dig up the roots.
It wouldn't bother me if you could cut the tree back to 1 small trunk block, and still have it grow to a full size tree. Obviously more involved, more realistic methods could be devised up to some sort of continuos growth.

Do they grow at the same rate as they do from Sapling to Full-grown?
I would expect that it would pop from a sapling to a "Small Tree" much more quickly than it takes to go from a small tree to a full-size tree. The whole process should take about the same amount of time as it does now.

I like this... But having a Sapling this become redundant. A small tree IS a Sapling...
OH! These could become bushes. GOD how I want bushes...
Yeah, i know, but i thought it would be confusing if i called these "saplings". Ideally the old saplings could be renamed to "seedlings".
Yeah, i saw that bush topics were fairly popular, so tried to meet both needs at once.
The map generator should have theses spawn twice as often as trees, because then forests would look a lot more dynamic.
If you really wanted to go crazy, you could have 7 different stages, just like you have 7 different stages of wheat. (Okay maybe that's asking a bit to much).
I'd say that each "trunk" section should drop about 2 planks, instead of log blocks.

you're losing too many resources at that point. You're already missing out on the log blocks that can be used to make charcoal.

My concern isn't just realism, it's exploitation. It wouldn't be balanced to be able to grow trees when you're doing that.

Loosing too many resources compared to what? I'm not suggesting that harvesting trees while they are small should be part of an optimal tree farming practices. Just if you need a few quick sticks while you are in the woods, chopping down some small trees is the obvious place to get them.

If small trees just give sticks instead of planks, potential exploitation is halved.
Even so, in practice i don't think it matters much. Even if partial harvesting doesn't effect final size-- If somebody really want to maximize lumber production, they'll probably plant more trees, instead of hanging around pouncing on the small trees as soon as they can.
I'm not particularly invested in any idea about what happens to a partially harvested small tree. Maybe taking any of the small trunk blocks kills it. Whatever the rule is, it should be simple, practical and obvious.

Sapling -> Small Tree -> Full Tree?
Either way, this is a nice idea. 20 foot high trees that are 1 meter square poping out of a sapling always looked so weird.

Saplings are ugly, they should look like the small trees in the OP pictures.
