I have had an inspiration. I was recently rereading this thread when I came across an idea with massive potential; capes.
Read it, and I think you will agree that the on-line emblem editing system rather limits the possibilities for multiple outfits. Add in the possibilities for embroidered beds and tapestries (which, I hypothesise, would be a good replacement for paintings as secret doors when the 'hovering in mid-air' bug is fixed) and there seems to be room for an entirely new art discipline; sowing/embroidery or, as a more macho-friendly name, Cloth-craft!
Who better to submit this idea to than the arts master than you, the uncrowned king of Minecraft art? Well, here you go. Please have a go at it!
The problem is, this is your idea, not mine. I'm not really sure how to present that, and because you had the idea, why not make your own thread for it?
Because, frankly, I suck at re-texturing and modelling and all that stuff.
Also, I suspect that you would have much more insight into how it would work gameplay-wise.
Seriously, you are by far the best person for the challenge. All I've done is discovered a hole, you can fill it with whatever you think would work.
I honestly have no idea how it would work. Sorry, I just feel as if you are trying to force me to come up with a great idea. I will think about it, but you should really make your own thread. Just tell me what images you will need, and I will see what I can do to make them.
This is, however, the single greatest post ever made on this entire forum. And for that, I applaud.
Needs more attention on GetSatisfaction. Disappointing numbers disappoint.
Holy crap! Ygdrasel made a positive comment? This is a miracle! Hah, just messing with ya!
Anyways, on topic, I support this completely! It would help with clans on SMP make it more themed, like my clan is Zelda based, so there could be paintings of the Triforce, sages, crap like that.
If Notch don't read this and it get implented before the final realese I will go med! 'Cause this is AWSOME I love this It MUST be impleneted! :biggrin.gif: :cool.gif: :tongue.gif:
OMGOSH! I LOVE THESE IDEAS!!! One thing though Could you mention a Piano?? Also I wanted to make a club, With jazz paintings, And a band, and a books for menus THIS COULD MAKE THAT COME TRUE!!!!! :biggrin.gif: For you: And A Pick for mining it!
to you sir!
May i also throw in a suggestion, in that you can craft a record eg coal surounding coloured wool, and you could set songs to that colour of wool, so that, essentially, the music is yours, and you can freely edit it eg. set a cyan wool record to TNT by CaptainSparklez so that, when you craft that disc in Single player survival, it played TNT by CaptainSparklez, and a multiplayer server had set songs (depending on the guy running the server of course)
Thats an idea from me!
The music section looks very nice, but I have a thought:
What about pipe organs? the pipes themselves could be made out of stacked blocks, to determine pitch (i.e., 1 block highest, 2 blocks lower, etc.), and the console could be another placeable block. the GUI could be a sort of manual arranged for computer keys. Bellows would be crafted and placed near (Underneath, providing power to adjacent pipes) them, to provide wind.
I love this idea, I'm a musician and art major so I'm way behind this kinda stuff. However there are some minor ways in which your suggestion could be improved:
Painting:
- If we're going to be expanding the dyes system, why stop at paintings? Give us the ability to create textiles. Carpets would be awesome, as would wallpaper, and the use of your Animal Crossing-like palette interface is well suited to these kinds of additions. I also think it would be neat if we could paint on leather armor (it's customizable, but has the lowest durability and protection factor, so game balance?), effectively making "clothes" a new addition.
-I don't think we should be limited to 16 colors, but I do think the range of available colors should be tied to dyes somehow, it's just more Minecrafty that way. Perhaps the answer is more dyes, or more combination dyes obtained through crafting. Creative mode's range of wool tints is actually rather different from Beta's:
Classic-
& Beta-
Perhaps by including all of these shades as dyes, as well as the additions you made, we could have a reasonable range of colors. However at the moment your palette is actually missing some of the colors that are already in the game as dyes, most noticeably orange and brown... although I'm sure this was just an oversight on your part. :tongue.gif:
-Maybe this has nothing to do with your suggestion, but I think that all of the game's building materials: stone, cobblestone, mossy cobblestone, wood planks, sandstone, brick, and glass, (maybe obsidian) should be compatible with dyes in addition to wool. Ores and things like dirt, sand, and clay couldn't be dyed, but we would have complete control over the color and aesthetics of our homes and bases. We would no longer be confined to choosing between "dungeon" "shanty shack" and "brick" without mods.
Literature:
-Nothing really to add here since I can't see myself using this too much. I know Notch is already planning to let us write in books at some point in the future, I can't remember where I saw this but it's coming. I mean ink and paper are all already in there.
-I really like the idea of stamped currency, but if your idea is implemented, I can promise you this: scrolls would not stack, because each one would possibly be unique. So each unit of currency would take up a whole inventory space, thereby sort of defeating the purpose. Paper money would need to be a separate item that you can carry around in large quantities.
Music
-The crafting recipes for the instruments really don't need to have redstone. This is more of a personal annoyance than a real critique, but redstone is analagous to copper, not magic dust, and real instruments aren't typically built with either.
-MOAR instruments. Talking drum comes to mind:
[-][-][-]
[leather][leather][leather]
[wood][-][wood]
[-][wood][-]
-You're right about losing half your audience by involving binary. Make them easy to play. Minecraft instruments should be easier to play than real ones. Just assign notes and chords to keyboard keys, press escape to leave the interface. Instant music. I'd like to believe people who are technically skilled with real instruments would rather play those, so this should be accessible and not needlessly complex like most of what people do with redstone.
-You should not have to layer tracks to make chords. That's kind of dumb. The ability to easily play chords should be one of the instruments' primary advantages over note blocks, while redstone functionality should be the advantage note blocks have over instruments. Chords should just be assigned to a single key press or be formed when you hold multiple keys down at once, although some keyboards can't register more than two keys being pressed at once so a single key press is better. Another button, perhaps on the side of the screen, could switch octaves.
-If you're going to be recording, you don't want your song to be ruined by the sudden spawning of a slurping spider (say that three times fast). Mobs are constantly making noise, and so I propose th introduction of a soundproofing block to accompany the recorder. It would be crafted with wool and look like it was made out of you know, this stuff:
A single block would do nothing, but surrounding yourself with the stuff would mean people outside couldn't hear you, and you couldn't hear anything going on outside.
-Concerning custom records, 30 seconds ain't ****. If I want to take up hard drive space with hours worth of MIDIs, that's my own damn choice. Give us at least five minutes, if not more.
-I want instruments that make mob noises. Yes, trolls will abuse them, but trolls have all the fun and this is fairly harmless.
-Craftable mp3 players, you have them in your inventory, pull them out, hold them in your hand, right click to turn on/off, and it plays whatever record you've put in it (through crafting). Screw everyone who says Minecraft is "medieval". It can be a magical wooden iPod.
Anyways, this is great stuff with or without my additions!

This is a neet idea, but I don't think this really need, seeing we have skins.

I used a palette that had every major hue in pure, tint, and shade, has well has black, white and gray. I didn't think of the dye colors when making this. I think that keeping the amount of colors low is good, as it will stick with the 8-bit feel.
-Maybe this has nothing to do with your suggestion, but I think that all of the game's building materials: stone, cobblestone, mossy cobblestone, wood planks, sandstone, brick, and glass, (maybe obsidian) should be compatible with dyes in addition to wool. Good idea! But not mine.

I know that scroll would not stack, but I didn't think of that. But it's not as if this is a forced thing: People could decide if they wanted to do it that way, or just use the old method of bartering.

-The crafting recipes for the instruments really don't need to have redstone. This is more of a personal annoyance than a real critique, but redstone is analagous to copper, not magic dust, and real instruments aren't typically built with either.
I think redstone fits because note blocks have it. And redstone is nothing like copper, mainly because copper is not a dust and uses current in a completely different way.
-MOAR instruments. Talking drum comes to mind:
[leather][leather][leather]
[wood] [wood]
[wood]
We already have drums in the form of note blocks. Instruments work with note blocks, not as an alternative.
Binary is not hard. Even people who don't get binary can learn by playing by ear. I think that the instruments should take a little skill, so it can be a job.
Now you're just talking about a completely different way of using instruments, and that's not how I think it should be done.
-If you're going to be recording, you don't want your song to be ruined by the sudden spawning of a slurping spider (say that three times fast). Mobs are constantly making noise, and so I propose th introduction of a soundproofing block to accompany the recorder. That is a good idea! Although I think it has already been suggested.
-Concerning custom records, 30 seconds ain't ****. If I want to take up hard drive space with hours worth of MIDIs, that's my own damn choice. Give us at least five minutes, if not more.
So many people have complained about this that I think I will change it to 1 minute. But the point is it is hard to make. So not a second more.
-I want instruments that make mob noises. Yes, trolls will abuse them, but trolls have all the fun and this is fairly harmless.
Meh... that's a little weird. Why not just go out and record real animals?
-Craftable mp3 players, you have them in your inventory, pull them out, hold them in your hand, right click to turn on/off, and it plays whatever record you've put in it (through crafting). Screw everyone who says Minecraft is "medieval". It can be a magical wooden iPod.
This is a no. Sorry, but music is supposed to be cool, rare, and not too easy.
Anyways, this is great stuff with or without my additions!
Thanks for all your ideas, even if I did shoot most of them down. :unsure.gif:

False.
To be "the best mod evaR!!!!!!!!" it would need to be a mod first.
This isn't a mod.

Incompetence is a plague. I am the cure.
For all your wolf suggestion needs, I present the WOLF MEGATHREAD!
Stories: A Miner's Chronicle, The Lost Chronicle [Entries 32-2, 33-1, and 33-2 out!]

I like paintings. I think a 16x16 canvas with 16 different colours would do nicely.

Note blocks don't record anything.
Plenty will write a lot. That's why suggestions for writeable books always pop up.
