Even if there were iron, incendiary, diamond, gold, or obsidian arrows, the player should get a damage bonus for being a skilled shot and hitting monsters from many tiles away. I won't throw out numbers or how many tiles away before the bonus should take effect because I would like some feedback on that. [>>-i>] [>>-i>]
If you won't offer any numbers or ranges or anything, you shouldn't be posting. A little flesh on the bones, so to speak, isn't a hard thing to manage...

Do you show children your phallus? Is that what you want them to see?
One of the problems with that though, while it is harder to get such a shot, an arrow loses a lot of momentum after a long flight, so would technically do less damage. I think arrow's should do more damage though, (or at least based on the last time I used them a month or so ago) and it would be really awesome if mobs that died after they'd been shot by an arrow dropped the same number of arrows you put into them. It's a pain being able to pick up arrows that miss, but not getting rewarded with arrow's back after successfully killing your target.

Ah, there we go, or a percent chance for every arrow put into them that they're still intact enough that they are able to be re-use. So, if you shot five arrows into a creeper, and each arrow has a 25% chance of dropping, then you will most likely get at least one of your arrows back.

I offered a thought, and presented it in a way to harbor discussion. You, on the other hand, are not being discussion friendly, so I'm glad my discussion style doesn't appeal to you.
I feel an arrow should do more damage the closer you are if anything. It's illogical to have an arrow cause more damage when its velocity has slowed.

Well no, in archery you fire the arrow upwards so it arches toward your target if they are far away, so it get's the most speed after it reaches the highest point in the arch. So as it falls to the earth toward the target it picks up speed and thus would do more damage.
Also, not only that, if the target is close enough where you do not have to arch your arrow, the arrow actually loses very very little speed, as in a negligible amount. So if it close enough where you don't have to arch the arrow, you will not have to worry about the arrow slowing down.
So which ever way you fire, arching the arrow, or if you are close enough not to, you don't have to worry about loss of speed, or damage.
This idea makes some sense and it should give you a bonus.
HOWEVER, it should be a bonus based on speed, not distance. Because there are circumstances in which the distance matters. Such as when you are at the bottom of a hill firing at a target at the top, firing upward like that you are likely to lose speed and thus less damage, despite it's distance. So a speed based would make more sense and still give a bonus due to distance due to the aforementioned arching effect.
