Notch has never said anything about implementing this, the only thing that implements these things are mods. If you are telling this to the people who are suggesting it, we all have different opinions, stating how it "Won't work" it's just because you don't enjoy it, many others might.
However, I agree that I don't like the ideas of Minecraft as an RPG.
Hardcore PvP gamers who want tons of weapons and armor types implemented that are eerily similar to each other for no reason.
Hello, I would applaud you not to stereotype eh? I come from world of warcraft, the largest MMORPG to date, I come from the highest tier of PvPers (top 1%) and I agree with almost every single point you have made. :smile.gif:
In PvP in RPGs I ended up keybinding (assigning a key to a certain action) to over 75 buttons, including my 12 button mouse, but it just got boring. Minecraft is far different from that game and it's PvP has it's own genre of skill. I look foward to see how it will play out, since I myself, am an Avid PvPer and player of minecraft :biggrin.gif:.
A few things. I think civilization should be added but I don't think currency or shops should be implemented. Maybe reputation to earn something (special type of bows or armor? Would be an interesting way to get people involved in defending cities.) Or you could be kicked out during the night, or you just couldn't place anything in the cities (how fun would coding that be?), but there's no way we could let currency, shops, and a placing a bed as you mentioned, stay in the game.
And one last thing, I think two or so different kinds of weapons should be added, why? Not every situation is the same, if you're fighting a creepier and you don't prefer ranging, there should be a large ranged weapon at your disposal. Or if a zombie is stupidly close to your face you should be able to push him back and kill him with greater ease if you are prepared. Or if a skeleton just has too much range on you and you need shield some of damage (not sure how this one would work honestly.) I don't think they should differ too much in stats just...
Range
Damage
Defense
No reason to get stat heavy on it.
i understand that a RPG gameplay on minecraft wont work due to the sheer fact that this is a sandbox game. now heres 1 thing that i believe should be added.
1:randomly generated towns just so you can interact with something the whole your alone deail with it gets boring in honesty id rather play SMP then SSP because im not alone and can do things with ppl and interact with ppl. now if randomly generated towns is ever implemented i think millinare mod should be the foundation of the update make the AI better and thats all. give us a bit bigger goal in minecraft other than just build because that gets bland after 2 months of repetitive gameplay.
I absolutely agree with all the points you made, I especially agree with the useless weapons one, I hate it when people try to make minecraft too complicated! (I have no hatred for when people make mods though)
Minecraft shouldn't be an RPG game. But, it should be fully able to be made into one. While certainly there are design issues with RPG games, economy issues, and spell/skill issues, and elements of good and bad design. Those are design issues, they are not Minecraft issues.
Generally there are some elements of Minecraft that would lend themselves to MUD (smaller typically text based games of old) namely the block system, the physics system, and loading from the server, and out of the box functionality. There are other issues that don't lend themselves well, like the changing the world aspect. Any reasonable RPG would generally not allow players to modify the world. What's the point of building a large city if various people can blow up the shops? But, those are game choices.
The relevancy to Minecraft is not to build an RPG, or even the framework for an RPG, but rather to build the ability to modify it such that it could be made into that. If I wanted to, at the server level, rip out most of the game and replace it with an extremely complex and elegant RPG could I do that? What is stopping it from working? Not the whining about potential terrible design, assume I'm really a fantastic programmer and designer, what is missing that prevents that from happening. -- Whatever is missing for such a large modification is also missing for any other large modifications (so it's not really specifically RPG based). Could I implement Pac-Man? Could I make a board where I run around picking up dots being chased by ghasts in a pretty specific pattern? I'm not saying I would ever care about that, or ever want to play such a silly game. But, I'd like it to be totally possible.
Having Minecraft add dozens of silly weapons is a waste. But, why couldn't the server modification add such items and have it reflected for the client. Can a server modification give people an aura? Can a server modification give a secondary stat like HP (Mana)? Can a server modification make radically different mobs exist? The point of a sandbox game is to allow for anything, and frankly anybody with a lot of time, should be able to nestle a very functional RPG into that if it's built right. Right now a good amount of that functionality doesn't exist. What would be needed, to make it possible to make a really good framework for an RPG or other radically modified implementation.
Many of the ideas bantered about are well beyond the scope of Minecraft, but they should be within the scope of the Minecraft engine, and yeah, people can make crap. But, some people can make rather fantastic worlds if given half a chance.
If your best idea for a game is prevented me from being able to cut down a birch tree until I have enough experience with normal trees and then a lot of birch trees until I can successfully chop down a pine tree, that's just you being lame. If you want to give players, having reached sufficient level, the ability to cast invisibility and vanish briefly, that's awesome. Yeah, people can make crap but they can also make awesome. And the whole point of a sandbox is to just make it feasible. Nobody should request an RPG game, but they should request the tools needed to make a good one.
With current mods/plugins in play I can easily see a semi-RPG in place.
By adding a Regional Guard (aka, changes cannot be made, no addding/removing blocks) in a "city area" the city can be preserved, for "city purposes" such as Trade/advertising/adventure, etc. Nothing like getting to the old pub and having a few drinks while talking about what you found in a mine that day.
This means that while keeping the city preserved for everyone to enjoy - it allows the normal flow of game outside of town, blowing stuff up, building up huge skyscrapers, etc.
As for most of the rest, sure skills are pointless, WRONG. How about a EXP/leveling system based on what your doing? If your farming, it levels up Farming, if your Chopping wood, it levels up Lumberjacking, if your fighting mobs, it levels up, you guessed it, Combat. What does this do? you may ask, well simply put, it should give you the only thing you need... more stuff. Let's say level 100 is the cap, at level 100 you have say a 30% chance that whatever your doing (farming, mining, lumberjacking, combat) when the job is 'done' (aka, block destroyed, mob killed, crops harvested, wood cut) gives you double resources, instead of the 1/few. So you could get 2 blocks of wood, or a skeleton could drop 4 bones, etc.
Wouldn't that be useful? More resources for less work, simply because you put the effort in, means more fun doing other things besides "collection".
Sure Intelligence, Charisma and all that are pointless, and I totally agree they would just muck up the server, especially if "stamina" or "mana" or whatever you wanna call it were added. No need for it.
Levels, by themselves "I am a level 43 player now!" Are not really needed but, "dude My mining just hit 72!" would be something to shoot for, as a goal, instead of just.. break block... break block... while collecting materials for whatever project your doing at the time.
I agree with the MMO idea will not work. Why restrict yourself but about the Weapons... i know.. but..
I wouldnt care with the weapons still all did the same damage. but i think having a small vary in them would be nice a sword is all well and good but if its not your fancy you could say run around with an Spear, Hammer, Shield or something so you can whack away at NPC's in the style of your chooseing! :happy.gif:
but yeah, dont add stats or any of that crap... Make them all the same since its for look/feel not the stats... it only clogs your inv if you feel you must make them all. lol
This is a pointless thread ¬_¬; and should therefore be in the 'discussion' section if any, not stickied in the suggestions section (why it was in the first place is beyond me).
This thread is nothing but a place for people to try to prove each other, and their respective ideas, preferences and theories....WRONG. (And theres some good ideas lost in here too..)
Some info for you all: Mojang can and prolly WILL just go ahead with whatever they feel like. Some will like it. Some will not. You'll all get over it.
Can we close this damn thread now before it turns into Trolls R' Us?

Trollcalling is the act of trying to convince other users that a poster is a troll and/or accusing other users of being trolls. This is a bannable offense. Please report trolling, do not advertise it or react to it.
Of course we build villages and cities! Its social. Whats the point of playing a multiplayer game alone? I like the idea of trying to build some-sort-of society even if it usually ends in a firestorm and destruction. The whole idea of building towns only falls apart when the damned trolls come in.
Why Your RPG Ideas Will Not Work For Minecraft Classes
TL;DR: Why would you choose to only be good at a few things, when you should be good at everything?
You can have an RPG without herding players into narrowly defined classes. You can have an RPG without classes.
Quote from Kira »
Civilization
TL;DR: Civilization is MORE than just cities, shops and people.
NPCs and Humans
TL;DR: Adding Human-like Humans to the Game would take too much effort, and no matter how hard you try, they would either have to be inhuman mutes or drones for labor and activities, and it still wouldn't be human enough.
Of course. This is also a game. Building a house is more than just throwing blocks around and animals do more than just stand around and stare at you. How the **** do you hold the expectation that should Minecraft have human NPCs that they breathe, eat and **** realistically enough that you forget that you don't interact with people in the real world?
Quote from Kira »
Experience Points
TL;DR: Don't force people to do things that WASTES THEIR ****ING TIME.
You can have an RPG without experience points.
Quote from Kira »
Leveling
TL;DR: A design system made to control gameplay hours and halt immediate progress in the game would only serve to annoy players who DON'T want anything to do with it.
You can have an RPG without leveling. This is no different in any way from experience points.
Quote from Kira »
Tier Limitations
TL;DR: Now that I have the best items, I now notice there is a lot of useless inferior **** in the game that I will never need to use ever again.
Tools have a breaking point so that inferior tools becoming obsolete is not an issue. I have a diamond pick, but I normally only mine with stone picks, so what's your point?
Quote from Kira »
Currency
TL;DR: Game is too easy when I'm rich, and too hard when I am poor. Why mine it when I can buy it?
How is going to a shop and using items to buy things any different from going to a crafting table and using items to craft things? You're still expending items and you're still getting different items in return.
Quote from Kira »
Pointless Stats
TL;DR: There are too many stats to manage, and I feel the need to pointlessly max all of them out!
Because its NOT AN RPG WITHOUT A BLADDER STAT!
Quote from Kira »
Repetitive Inventory
TL;DR: All the "different" weapons aren't that different, all the new items are weaker, faster, long-reaching, complicated or stronger versions of something that already exists.
I like it. I didn't read the whole thing, but I wholeheartedly agree that minecraft cannot become a RPG. That idea is . KABOOM. I could maybe imagine a MMO wing of minecraft, but for right now what I want the focus to be on is fixing bugs, adding features, and making the legit mod thing-a-ma-jig work. I think that once that is good, I'll be pretty happy.
However, I agree that I don't like the ideas of Minecraft as an RPG.

God damn it. It's likely Suggestion Rules.
Look at text - saying about to not do. What does it remember? Remember rules.
