I wish I could tell that to every other game made to date ... "I'm on a alien world blasting things with fricken laser beams, why are there wooden crates everywhere?"

No, I will not subscribe to your channel because you asked... but I might if it's *good*.
I kind of like the idea of being able to craft crates. Just from a visual perspective it would be cool. Kind of like the book cases. You could build storage rooms and such. Maybe have it so that they can hold only one kind of block but way more of it than a regular chest could. Another thought, maybe instead of opening it like a chest you have to destroy it and all the contents come flying out.
...but yeah, seriously, you should have fleshed this all out in your opening post. Not me.

Still, I give you for having the idea
Crates have been suggested before.
I suggested them with the features:
Limited storage capacity.
Break to recover contents.
Effected by gravity and breaks when falling to far

See, OP? This sounds a lot better. This sounds fun. All of it.
However, there should be a reason to craft it instead of a chest...
Hmmm... 3x3 storage space, but crafting the recipe yields 2 crates?
Either that, or let a crate be accessible while there is a block on it.

Are you always so pessimistic?
Yes, yes I am. A pessimist is always either right, or pleasantly surprised.

Egads..this is World of Warcraft meets Battlefield 1942 in a dark alley with way too much to drink and no discarded mattress nearby.
A crate would be like a chest, except it would have 1/2 the storage space of a one-block chest, and would have the special property of being able to ‘catch’ stuff. When an item falls onto the crate it is automatically stored in the crate. Items would stack normally as elsewhere. Crates could be connected to other stuff
Chests: a crate on a chest would have the storage space of a crate + a chest and could catch items. It does not need to be crafted with a workbench.
Minecarts: Needs to be crafted in a workbench. Like a storage cart, but with a crate. It's just a mobile version of the crate. (Also could work with any future vehicles.)
Dispensers: When an item falls into the crate on top of the dispenser, it is stored in a combined crate/dispenser space. The item can then be shot out of the dispenser. A long chain of these could be used with a redstone clock to automatically transport items.
Crates would be super helpful in mob traps, and could be used on top of chests so that you could just throw stuff at it instead of opening the chest.

Hey, all I'm saying is that you should flesh out an idea before you post it; all you did was say, "Hey, there should be crates."
You didn't tell us why we need them, what they'd do, how you'd make them... 5 words told us nothing.
I guarantee you that you'll receive far worse responses than my initial post, sir. I was at least trying to be mildly humorous.
They would just be something to jump up on to get to something higher.
I'll just stick to my dirt.
