I've always found one problem in minecraft: when you fall into a minimum light level cave, you can see faintly from the moment you fall in. And if you dig a hole to the surface, so light gets in to your very dark area, it doesn't suddenly seem extremely bright.
So I think that your eyes should become accustomed to daylight if you're outside, and if you go into a torch lit room for a few moments it should seem slightly dark.
Then you go into a minimum light level cave, and over a period of 30 seconds it should seem to get lighter, till the completely dark caves seem only as dark as they are now.
Then head out from there into the sunshine, and the light, for about 10 seconds would be dazzling. Then it would seem normal sunshine brightness.

I support. Would allow torchless exploration. Yeah, torchless exploration would be dangerous but it would also be fun!
Errr... we're trying to make torches optional. You know, in preparation for torches-burn-out update and to make ironman like challenges easier? Plus it would make entering/leaving dark caverns feel like a bigger deal, visually.

Torches-burn-out update? Is this a real update coming or something your predicting?

It has been discussed, proposed, mentioned by Notch, and planned in the development of the game for a very long time. Eventually torches will burn out.
I support this. This would be a great way to make the game look better visually, and have a function. I think however, that this has a limit. There is a certain point where your eyes adjusting to it doesn't exacly help anymore. So realistically, I don't think your Minecraft eyes should adjust to pitch darkness. Aka light level 0.

Tears aren't the end of your sins... You have to bear them painfully, Forever.
I think that idea could use a little work, but it is good. Maybe you could have long-term benefits, like staying in a cave for a day makes your eyes adjust to all levels of darkness but you are stunned for 10 seconds upon exposure to light.

This idea is so you do adjust to all levels of light, but not so that all levels of light look like sunlight level. Lightless caves would seem pitch black at first, but they would gradually seem to get brighter till they seem like current brightness. But you're right, maybe your eyes could, after the quick adjusting, could have a very slow adjusting till it's adjusted twice as much. But no stunning. (Though the sunlight would seem EXTREMELY bright.)
