I did the best searching I could, by searching the Suggestions thread and a few pages of the sub-forum, but couldn't find anything on my topic. I am fairly certain that someone has already suggested this idea, and even though that contradicts my first sentence, I figured I would put it out there again.
My idea is to implement the ability, or an item that allows, Minecarts/Powered Minecarts to connect. This would increase productivity, and decrease the time needed to travel, both of which are reasons we take the time to place Rails, Minecarts and Powered Minecarts.
Those of us that have used these items know the hassle of putting Coal or Charcoal into the Powered Minecart and run towards the front, hoping to make it in before it manages to leave us behind. You could connect them by either placing them front-to-end(or vice verse) to each other. Or, you could add an item that you could place between them that would connect them. It could possibly be called...oh, I dunno...a Connector or Connector Piece? This piece would enable us, the players, to place a Powered Minecart ahead and behind a regular Minecart. Then, getting into the Minecart would allow us to look forward and place the Coal/Charcoal into the Powered Minecart at the front, and thus move forward. Once you reach the other end of the Rails, and when you want to go back, simply get back into the Minecart, look at the opposite Powered Minecart as before(which would now be in front of you again) and repeat the process needed to get moving again.
This would simply save us the time we built these items for. I know some people are suggesting ideas, such as indestructible tools, that would simply take some of the fun or difficulty out of the game. This is the reason I went to such intricate detail of my idea, to show that it would simply be the time saver we expected, and less difficult. No one wants to spend their time trying to catch the Minecart when it could be much simpler. I'm sorry if you don't agree, or if this idea has already been submitted. For those of you who will not agree with my idea, I ask you to please post constructive criticism and why you disagree. This is simply so that we can enhance upon this suggestion so that we may all agree upon it.

Suggestions from Posters: unequeled - Ability to attach all types of Minecarts, create trains. megaman16 - Limit to the number of carts attached(5-10~), Workbench Carts for mobility.
I like this idea. I recently got into minecraft via some friends of mine, and I was disappointed when they told me that there was no way to link minecarts.
I notice in your description you only mention connecting powered minecarts to regular
Minecarts. Would we be able to attach two regular minecarts? Or a powered one to a storage one? Or a regular to a storage one? Personally I would like to have a train, with powered minecart on each end, connect to a regular cart, with a few storage carts in-between for transportation of blocks in and out of mines, to and from construction sites.. Etc.
This is exactly why I wanted criticism. Yes, you would be able to connect any type of Minecarts. This would essentially allow you to create a train, which is what you said.

I'm sorry, I did not see your suggestion, but I have already made my points for people who have already suggested this. It doesn't hurt to get it out there more.
I have been playing minecraft for quite some time and this idea is one of the very idea's I have always wanted. I used to use storage carts to get stuff out of my mine but found it a pain to push to cart out due to the lack of the powered carts being able to push another cart quite like you think they should be able too. Now they can do it but not as mush as I would have expected; an I thought it would be great to hock a up a train. From front to back: powered cart, minecart, storage cart (full of coal), storage cart(for mined items, maybe a few carts here), storage cart (full of coal), minecart, powered cart. This way you could transport supplies in and out of your mine in bulk. And also connecting the carts enable other purposes. You could make a train system to take you to your other base's and such outside of your base/mine. This could change everything there is about minecraft. True it would take a long time to set the tracks and get it all set up but it would be a fast, reliable form of transportation in mine craft. So far you can only take a "boat" to do this w/o the need to make a minecart tack that go's all over the place just to get you to the next hill. Being able to connect carts would make it so all you would need is flat ground and a supply of coal to get to where you are going. I believe if this suggestion was added, minecraft would become 10 times better than it already is.
Thank you for your positive input, Roman. This is exactly what I'm talking about. Adding this feature would literally open up another part of the world for you. While it will take a while to lay the track, like you said, once it is laid it will be so much easier to travel. Giving you the chance to expand upon your world and further mold it to your liking.
I think there should be a cap on how many, say, five minecarts may be connected at once? There should also be a Workbench minecart, just to have the convenience of a mobile workbench, it would be made very similarly to a regular Storage/powered minecart, but a workbench in the center.
That completely slipped my mind...I apologize for not having done so.

Suggested a lot, but it's a good idea.

Thank you for your support, and I like both of those ideas. Although I was thinking more of building small workshops(a room built into the side of your tunnel with a workbench, chest, furnace, etc.). This is definitely much more productive.

This seems better stated then the others I've seen. I'm sick of having to break and move my powered minecart every time I change direction =(

I figured if I were to clearly state myself and go into as much detail into my idea as I could, it had a better chance of being recognized. No one really wants to read a suggestion such as "plz add ths cuz it r so awesum," right? But yes, having to break the Powered Minecart each time you change direction is definitely a pain. If this were to be added, that would not be a problem.
i dont like the idea of a cap on how many carts you can have, so hows about the more, the slower and you have to add more engines to bring it back to a decent speed so you could end up with a train looking like this:
that way it doesn't limit the game for people who want longer trains but it does make it require more of an effort.
I don't agree with not having a limit. Maybe a larger limit than 5, but I definitely think there should be a limit.
I found one forum that has some really great idea's about connecting minecarts. http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=102192 this is the forum; Ehnonimus has some great idea's. Not only about the minecrat/train idea, but also some added stuff to the tracks themselves. His idea's could be a really great, but maybe a few change's in a few places.

Thank you for your response. I have seen this thread, but I noticed he said that he didn't think connecting them was needed. I am saying that it is needed, because of how logical it seems and the other reasons posted.
I completely agree that the carts should be connected, so that it forms a "train." Which in this case wound fall under the "maybe a few change's in a few places" that was stated in the last sentence. But a few of his other idea's have to possibility of being really great idea's. As he stated about the powered carts:
Increase the speed to moderately faster than player walking pace and remove the penalty when climbing hills. This increases it's usefulness and value in the game.
Right-clicking the cart opens up a menu with a slot for stacks of fuel (coal, charcoal, wood) and a forward/reverse switch which players can use to determine the direction the cart will move when activated.
Clicking (hitting) a cart loaded with fuel will either activate or deactivate a cart. When activated, it will accelerate either forward or back depending on what setting the player set in the cart's menu.
A player sitting in a regular cart adjacent to a powered cart can access it's menu and toggle it's on/off state without having to leave their cart. This allows for the player to refill or control the powered cart while being pushed along by it.
Powered carts are affected by gravity. When climbing hills, their engines can easily power themselves and push an adjacent occupied cart up a hill at normal speed. When going downhill however, gravity affects their speed and can allow them to accelerate past their maximum. Upon reaching flat ground, they will gradually slow down until they drop to their maximum powered speed.
Some of these idea's could really help with the connected cart's in the fact that you could turn the powered carts on and off, and it would be easier to climb out of your mine rather than have a set of flat spots just in case your power cart fails an you roll back down. But as stated before, I agree that the carts should be connected.
Defently needed and wanted. The only mod that had these kind of improvements use forge craft whitch makes it incomparable with some stuff I use :(. It would be nice to have a nice simple mod to add these great ideas this tread has
