Minecraft lore heavily stresses the importance of souls and how they can be transferred to other things. In Minecraft, it's the undead, soul sand, and the warden with the souls in its chest. In Minecraft dungeons, we see souls are used in all sorts of other ways that are not evident in Minecraft. I feel for the warden it'd be an interesting mechanic that we would be able to use a live warden to somehow interact with souls, whether it be able to harness soul power, or an interesting mechanic in which souls are very evidently involved. I basically want some way we can interact with souls. Soul sand watervators are great, but they don't have a clear connection to the "soul" in "soul sand." Outside of obvious soul embedded nether sand, the warden is the next best place we can see a depiction of a soul. And not only do we get the souls in the chest, we can also see that they are very much animate within the confines of the warden's chest. For me personally, I want to see something that has to do with those souls inside of the warden. It was said that the warden was made to be avoided, but what if there was a reason you might want to go near it? That's pretty much the stem of this idea. Rooted in interesting mechanics and bloomed with something cool everyone can enjoy.
In mythology souls aren't the only source of magic, sometimes divine intervention is a factor, such as in the case of exorcisms
Usually it is the evil wizards or demons who use others souls that they stolen for their power, black magic to be exact.
I don't recall souls being a large contributing to factor to enchantments in Minecraft,
although soul sand is used for the making of soul fire, Wither and bubble columns in water.
The Nether doesn't follow the general interpretation of the afterlife, how can you die in Hell? the underworld is the destination of souls of the dead.
In xtian fiction the Nether world is a place of eternal suffering, you don't die and cease to exist there, according to their mythology and belief, ceasing to exist is impossible.
As for the Warden, what would the Warden have to do with any of this? it's a monster that lurks in the darkness in the Overworld in the deepest darkest caves, it doesn't have any mystical powers to speak of, and it is blind, and can only detect you by vibrations.
Minecraft could benefit from having mini quests as eiche said, freeing the lost souls of dead villagers in exchange for some rewards.
Perhaps we could have a mechanic where we free souls trapped inside soul sand in exchange for XP, but only good ones,
if bad souls are released, they spawn hostile mobs which you then have to kill to get yourself out of trouble.
There are some examples of lore in the game, even if it is sort of vague. Regarding magic, there's various items that seem to be pretty clearly imbued with arcane properties, even if it's still sort of in a vague, up for interpretation sort of way. Obsidian seems to be associated with gateways and has some clear connections to magic, what with the Enchanting Table, Nether Portals, Respawn Anchor, and End Pillars. Enchanting also seems to have a lot to do with Lapis Lazuli, which has historically been prized both for its color, and beliefs regarding magical properties. It's used in enchanting, also has some sort of vague connections to the Illagers, and, admittedly, doesn't otherwise show up that much. Gold can be imbued with magical properties, is prized by piglins, and found in the ocean temple, is easier to enchant, but otherwise doesn't seem particularly magical in itself.
The Nether, however, is a source of several strange materials- from ghast tears, which apparently have something to do with regeneration, (Is it even entirely clear what the ghasts are?), to blaze rods- which are used in potions, have some sort of alchemical properties, and are also needed to make eyes of ender. The Nether clearly has some weird stuff going on with it.
...To sum up an increasingly rambling spiel, there's definitely some weird and magical stuff going on in minecraft, even if it isn't all very readily apparent. (Of course, Minecraft isn't really known for set in stone lore.) I think some sort of soul mechanics could be cool... but I also wouldn't mind more of an expansion of existing systems.) Whatever the case, if something new is coming regarding magic, I hope it would fit in with or enhance the existing systems.

It's clear magic is a part of the Minecraft lore, but it was never explained in detail why.
the Nether realm is supposed to be based upon the underworld in religions, hence the name.
Yet there are no demons, no river styx with souls moving through it so obviously Hades lord of the dead, doesn't exist in Minecraft, so it is nether the Nether in the sense of Greek mythology nor Christian Hell.
Piglin wouldn't be a great analog of demons, as they're not there to torture you, just doing something as simple as wearing gold is enough to prevent them from picking a fight with you. Is this demonic behavior? did Trigon in the DC comics ever do this? or any of his minions? please clarify here.
Last I checked fiction, demons don't care who you are, if you're not a worshiper of their leader, they would attack you or if a living mortal, try to possess you or manipulate you into doing something terrible.
Piglin have none of these behaviors, they're neither manipulative nor bright, they attack for a rather superficial reason, if you're not wearing gold. But when you're wearing gold they will barter with you and consider you as one of their own.

I think pigs beeing used as demons might have something to do with the demon legion.
Here is what i found on wikipedia:
Fearing that Jesus will drive them out of the world and into the abyss, they beg him instead to send them into a herd of pigs, which he does. The pigs then rush into the sea and are drowned.
Minecraft is extremely subtle about the lore, and it's still very much up to debate whether there's a story or not, however there are story elements that you can find in world generation, spawn mechanics, and mob behavior.
In the woodland mansion there's an Illager statue with a lapis block. That tells us that they've imbedded lapis into people. We know that lapis has magical properties because we use lapis in enchanting. So, it seems that someone or some group was experimenting. We can also find jails inside of woodland mansions, which also helps to support that theory. They also have mock builds as if they don't know how to build it themselves. They have mock ender portals, mock ender dragon eggs, and mock beds. Seems like they were trying to create something that they didn't know how to make.
Another mechanic is the wither. The wither doesn't spawn, and rather is created. But lo and behold, it is created using the souls embedded within soul sand. It is a very unnatural mob that can only be created by the player, which does tell us something. It was never meant to be in the world in the first place (only in lore sense, obviously it is supposed to be in the game).
Last point, the endermen. What a mysterious creature, don't look at it otherwise it gets mad. Don't look at it's eyes and it's totally chill with you. But, this strange creature has some interesting behaviors. Firstly, it is the only mob in the game that is able to pick up and place blocks. Hmmm, sounds kind of like steve. But, have you ever noticed what they sound like? They actually speak english. Now, it's very broken, but it's english. The main phrase they repeat is, "Look for the eye." That alone tells us they're trying to get us to go to the end portal. Either that or they're taunting us to look them in the eye, but I I don't think that's the case.
So as you can see, there are elements of things that have happened within the world, but it is very vague and mysterious. Most people would never see this and think, LORE! It is just a bunch of theory that may or may not be true, but it's something fun to think about. I used to think there wasn't lore until I started look at this kind of stuff. And that's why I want to have more to do with souls. With the warden coming out, having some mechanics with souls would be awesome, and provide people with more lore to follow. As for me, I'll just watch what other people think about lore in minecraft, and I'll draw my own conclusion.

Yes, but it still has important properties specific to minecraft.
True, but to make use of potions or enchantments in Minecraft doesn't mean you need to be a full time sorcerer or wizard,
potions and enchantments just exist in the game for the sake of gameplay, in the regular game, there is no story.
there's no class system in Minecraft, you can be the jack of all trades which could arguably be considered a balancing problem.
It also means Fire Protection IV temporarily loses its benefit when you're using fire resistance potions. If you're going to be using multiple 8 minute fire resistance potions throughout your entire trip in the Nether, this means you may as well not have Fire Protection IV at all, since the potions would be making you immune to fire and lava damage.
Warden isn't going to change this, it's just there in the dark waiting to ambush you.
I 100% agree. Potions aren't story related, the warden won't change too much, and Minecraft is an extremely open ended game with way too much to consider. I just feel like we don't have anything else related to souls, other than soul sand, and in gameplay we're not told that we're dealing with souls. So, with the only other thing that explicitly has souls in it, and is very animated (the warden), I just want to see something more done with souls.
True. The Warden is not the only soul-related mob,or the only magic related mob.Witches,Evokers, and Vexes are all soul-related and magic-related,so they should have something to do with it too.
Souls in the Nether make sense, considering the eerie Soul Sand and Soul Soil that thrives there.
Altars already exist in Woodland Mansions, but souls could have something to do with that too.
Agreed. However,I made my point that there are SOME soul-related mobs.
It indeed is.It would be amazing if we got all the awesome people at Mojang onto here so they can see what we've came up with.
True.I'm beginning to think we got ahold of an idea of (maybe) Minecraft lore.
If Mojang wishes to make the enchanting and potion system more challenging they can start by making soul sand a requirement for some enchantments imo.
I do think it would be interesting if we were required to become a mage in order to make use of enchantments,
it would make a lot of sense and there could be an advancement system based on that.
While I wasn't in favour of making diamonds or netherite rarer
I can get behind a suggestion that added in extra steps to put an enchantment on gear,
especially if soul sand became a requirement, and if we were required to do rituals to put some of the games most powerful enchantments
on our gear, so people don't get these items too early or too easily, it does make sense to make these items feel more like legendary tier
by making us put more work into earning them.
at the moment all you really need to put high level enchantments on your armour and tools is a sufficient amount of XP
and some books with enchantments on them that can be obtained by fishing, trading or using the enchantment table.
I think high level enchantments like Protection 4 or Fire Protection 4 should require "soul power", obtained by releasing demons from soul sand, and then defeating them, then absorbing their life essence inside a bottle of some kind.
Perhaps summoning the Warden to defeat the demons in the deep dark cave biome whilst making sure you don't get killed by him could be the method of defeating them, there's an interesting mechanic there for the Minecraft lore and expanding the magic side of the game, reminding the player that magic is still needed to progress in the game.
I too dislike discussing anything regarding mortality or individuality, it takes away the joy of life.
Hard no to this idea, sorry.
Also, fire resistance is pretty much useless thanks to fire resistance potions, especially now that magma cubes are so much easier to harvest.
and if fire protection has lost its advantage because of fire resistance potions being so easy to obtain
what do we do with fire protection? since for all intents and purposes its an inferior protection, it does not grant lava/fire immunity, only reduces the amount of damage.
It does help for general purpose armour for both Overworld and Nether exploration
but once you've got a lot of magma creams and chests filled up of fire resistance potions,
fire protection 4 loses its benefit in my honest opinion.
With an 8 minute fire resistance potion you can swim across an lake of lava and not die.
With Fire Protection 4 this is impossible, you have just a little over 30 seconds maximum before it terminates you.
How do you survive this if the lava lake in the Nether is more than 100 blocks wide? lava slows your movement,
so neither sprinting nor swimming is going to help.
This is an issue with Magma blocks spawning too frequently in the basalt deltas however me thinks,
meaning magma cream is too easily farmed, and you end up with a ridiculous amount of fire resistance potions
which aren't difficult to make once you've got netherwart for making awkward potions.
I mildly oppose. On personal objections.
I was never into hardline metaphysics in Minecraft.
Moreover, I think that the Warden is meant to be avoided regardless of intent. It shouldn't be useful by any means.

I think minecraft doesn't have a lore. But there is a lot of fanfiction going on.
Personally i am ok with having magic elements and items. Using souls however sounds like necromancy or dark wizardry.
A soul shouldn't be implemented as any kind of ressource. I'm not religious but imo a soul is very important and should be handeled with care.
How about mini-quests?
There could be souls trapped in the nether or the deep dark biomes, which the player could free to get little rewards.
I don't know right now how to free souls. Maybe they request items like flowers?
Feels weird talking about this topic.
Mojang doesn't want to add many animals bc reasons and here we are discussing how souls could work in Minecraft...

I think any "soul"-based content should primarily come from the Nether. I think if the Warden added anything unique, it should be sound-based
Since Minecraft is a sandbox I guess it would make more sense that we make our own story out of it.
The closest thing to Yahweh in Minecraft would be Herobrine, another fictional character, and Herobrine is just a made up character.
But we could use it for a story I guess, or something similar to it.
We're getting Deepslate soon, and candles, so building altars would be a good idea, stained glass mosaics and all.
