I have been looking into some of the older versions of minecraft and it made me wonder, how the player's character is able to hold 27 item slots in their inventory. The way I view it is the player starts out with a prebuilt in backpack that they carry with them on their journey. While it doesn't appear on the character anywhere, it is still an invisible backpack. In one of the older minecraft there was an arrow slot where the player could store their arrows and it got me thinking, why not have a backpack slot.
Steve or Alex ventures into the world with only access to their hotbar items. As the player progresses they collect materials to form a chest, which serves as the larger storage space until they are able to craft a backpack. Once the backpack is crafted and equipped, the player now has access to 27 additional slots. The backpack would be an early access item and only one backpack can be equipped at a time. Additional backpacks can only be stored in the hotbar and can't be placed inside of shulkers and other backpacks. Typically you want to carry no more than two in your hotbar at any one time. Backpacks can store shulkers boxes and items inside them. Backpacks can be placed inside of chests and enderchests. Backpacks are a non stackable item and each backpack takes up one chest slot. There would be a new backpack slot for equipping backpacks.
Advantages:
Backpacks allow the player to carry additional items on them while they are venturing out. This is great if you are building structures or doing lots of mining.
Backpacks can be switched out for other backpacks and can be dropped without the items coming out of their item slots.
Disadvantages:
Depending on how full the backpack is the players move at a slower rate while carrying them.
The hunger bar drains at a faster rate depending on how full the backpack is.
Backpacks take damage when the player takes damage or if the player is killed.
Backpacks take wear and tear damage overtime meaning that eventually you will need to replace them.
Backpacks are flamable and could be destroyed by fire or lava.
When a backpack is completely used up the items it was carrying drop to the ground.
When a player is playing without an equipped backpack they are able to travel at a faster rate and the hunger bar doesn't drain as fast. Players can go a much longer period of time without food due to their lightweight. Players are limited to the 9 hotbar items they are carrying with them. This is very useful if the player is going into very dangerous areas and wishes to battle mobs without risking a lot of the items they are carrying with them if they would die. To augment storage space the player would be more reliant on carrying shulker boxes or a chest with them to store their items.
Builder play style:
When a player is playing with an equipped backpack they are able to carry a lot more items with them. This is very useful if you are doing a lot of mining or if you want to do a couple of building projects. Players have access to their initial hotbar items as well as the 27 additional items in the backpack. Typically you need to be a bit more careful as you carrying a lot more materials with you at a time. You won't need to stop each time you gather materials then you would if you went without the backpack. In general avoid combat areas where you can as you are a lot slower and heavier. You will need a bit more food to help out your hunger bar.
I figured I edit this a bit to make it easier to view the different play styles. Backpacks in general are not designed to replace shulkerboxes. As such I added a few disadvantages to using them in order to balance out their use. Shulker boxes are a lot harder to come by as you are more likely to die getting them then not. The backpack is an early in game item that you get before traveling to the nether and the end. The backpack will require sticks, and either leather or wool to create them plus a chest, since the backpack has the same storage space as a single chest.
It has been suggested by one of the other users to have tiered versions of the backpack which would provide different amounts of inventory slots. I do like that idea and I think it be a good way to go about things. So tier one backpacks would add 9 item slots, tier 2 would be 18 item slots, tier 3 would be 27 item slots and higher tiers would provide even more slots.
I initially thought this would be just another backpack suggestion- however, the idea of completely revamping the inventory is actually kind of appealing. I too think 27 slots is pretty overpowered early in the game. However, I really don't think Mojang would consider such an idea, if only because of how difficult it would be to balance.
-I like the idea itself. It would make sense that you start with less inventory space. That is, initially you just have the hotbar and no inventory slots. There could be four levels of pack, (leather, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite). Leather gives you one row of inventory, iron gives you two, gold gives one but can be enchanted with various special abilities to give them more space/better stack height/better hotbar size, diamond gives the default inventory, and netherite gives slightly larger than default. Backpacks, like Elytra, would take the place of a regular chestplate, forcing players to prioritize further.
-All in all, I love the idea itself, but I think the odds of such a fundamental system ever being changed are pretty slim. Maybe as a modding request, but I really just can't see this in the base game.

I agree with you that it be cool to try out as a mod. Do you know any mod makers who like to give this a try first? I hadn't thought of the upgrade potential to this feature. I think that would be a good way to get it to work, but I am wondering if the backpack takes up the chestplate slot if that might make it a bit of a challenge since you don't have that plate to back you up. It might make it nice to have it as a choice between Elytra, Backpack, and Armor. I am open to more advice if you have any. I think it is better to see if this work as a mod before it is actually put in the game.
So this is a screenshot from iron-backpack i think this would look half as decent. I realy like this idea so here's a crafting.
Also it's mojang we're talking about, so it would be as realistic as not happening. Trust me it's never going to be a thing becuase of bundles and shulker's; that are basicly a backpack.

Let's not forget bundles, coming in the Caves and Cliffs update, backbacks will be already in the game so this suggestion was pointless tbh. Mojang listened to this suggestion people made at least, the backpack one. So now thanks to Shulker boxes which now exist, and the upcoming Bundles bag, we can clean up our inventory without leaving stationary storage behind.

So what do you guys think?
That is not an advantage imo.
Your idea is very realistic but i don't quite understand the poll.
Do you suggest 2 different backpack ideas or 1?
Please consider editing your thread, i am confused.
My projects:
-are abandoned for now. I might pick 'em up in the future.
For now i'm working on a private modpack that suit's my own playstyle.
I am gonna stay in modded 1.12.2 untill my potato dies. No mercy! :Q
