-Grimwood. I have seen this idea many times before, but I never liked it. Trees in the nether? COLD trees in the Nether? That doesn't even fit! I know people want to be able to make ice and stuff, but let notch improve biomes.
It seems logical, actually. Seeing as regular wood wouldn't survive in a place like the nether, plants would evolve to be cool.
I would think that they would evolve to be hot, so as to match their environment rather than be in conflict with it.
I think grimwood would fit better in the Aether. You'd then have to go to the Nether, then to the Aether, then back to the Nether. I can't tell if that would be an interesting mechanic or just tedious.

Okay, so WHY DEMON BONES INSTEAD OF SKELETON BONES
Alrightly, so going into this New Nether Grey and I backed the idea of "Good in the Nether, but not in the Overworld (OW)" Tools.
Grey wanted them to be built with Bones. The regular skeleton bones.
I was planning on using the Darkwood Shards but wasn't heartfelt on that idea. However, using an OW item to create something that has none of the OW drawbacks to it didn't make sense.
It'd be like saying "Let's use Sticks instead of Bones altogether."
Both Bones and Sticks come from the OW. And due to the way The Blight is built anything from the Overworld should only work half as well down in the Nether.
But these tools are supposed to receive no penalty while in the Nether.
So if we went with Bones, or Sticks, or even Iron Ingots, we'd still come to the same situation where we're bypassing the mithos that OW items aren't good in the Nether by slapping them next to some Nether items.
The Blight doesn't, and shouldn't, work that way.
So, while I was fine with a different tool for the handle instead of Gloomshards, I definitely did not want a COMMON OW item to become the basis of a tool tier you'd be using extensively in the Nether.
So that was "Why not bones?", now we come to "Why Demon Bones instead of Regular bones?"
I wasn't opposed to the idea of simply "Bone tools" but we couldn't use regular bones. We needed stronger bones. Bones that you couldn't just grind so easily into powder.
So I came up with the idea of "a different type of bone", and Grey came up with the logical backing that "It should also be craftable".
Once we had in place the new type of bone, and knowing that we wanted the New Nether to be far more "fight to survive", it made sense to attach it to a monster drop. And what better monster than the huge, hulking Troll?
If ANYTHING was going to have bones strong enough to survive the Blight of the Nether, it would be the Troll.
@ Bumber
That's getting to the point where it's tedious.
The reasoning behind why it's in the Nether and no longer in the Aether is because it surrounds itself with darkness (something commonly attributed to "ahh scary"_ and it "personally" regulates the temperature around it to the point that it can survive.
The Tree wouldn't make sense in the OW, and if put back in the Aether, the only thing that would make sense for it's having evolved to be there is it's darkening capabilities during Daey. Which is hardly a reason to keep it there as opposed to the Nether where fire is abundant, and light is scarce.
Thank you for the advice, but I'm afraid I'm gonna say no for collaborating, since some ideas will be lost and sometimes, that just isn't right,
Darn, I was going to ask if I could help to. And I disagree, when you have a partner to throw ideas off, what once seemed like a good idea, isn't always. And the partner could give good ideas back.

These guys make awesome art for Mods (Items, New Blocks and Mobs)
I will be using them soon
I'm Starting to be known as a Balancer, A.K.A. I'm starting to become pessimist
I'm really amazed that no one has commented on the Volcano mechanics yet. I'd have thought people would be all over that, but I guess the block and mob updates are getting passed up in favor of focusing on the new blocks and mobs.

Anyways, i do like quite a few of the ideas... except for the blood diamond idea. A diamond that's dropped by monsters? ... Would that make it a grind fest? I'd prefer if it was simply mined and it stacked like diamonds do.
Mining is the grind, the nether is a place where you have to fight to survive.
Further more, demon bones? Normal bones should work fine. Further more, I don't like the idea that you can't place lighting around grim wood. I suppose if the Aether is added, there could be light sources that resist grim wood. Otherwise, traveling through pitch black forests don't sound like fun.
Come on man, READ.
Glowstone and Glowstone Sand are unaffected other than having their light levels reduced.
and that wasn't even mentioning Mushraves or the Rave Gel. You just can't place FIRE-based lighting around Grimwood.
Actually, there is one thing I'd like to add. Namely, about the grim shards. An idea I have is that you could make a red stone torch from that can be mounted, like normal, to drop the light levels when powered by Red stone.
In the same vain, you can make a grim wood torch with a piece of coal. This creates a blue flame that absorbs the light around it. Basically, a longer reaching gloom wood log.
How did you know abotu Gloomwood shards, while managing to skip over the entire description of their function?
Gloomshards provide the same amount of "shade" as a Gloomwood log, but can only be planted in Tilled Soul Sand and can be activated and deactivated via Buttons, Levers, Pressure Plates and Redstone. Gloomshards are required to craft Netherraze tools. Gloomshards can be crafted in place of torches with Pumpkins to create Gloom Lanterns (which are of course immune to being broken by darkness from other Gloomwood) Gloomshards can grow into a Gloomwood tree only if Bonemeal is used on the planted Gloomshard.
Maybe it wasn't clear, but the Gloom Lanterns would be a method of extending the range of darkness created, and also making it so the gloomshards don't need to be planted in Soul Sand.

That's where your real confusion is. Gloomwood was originally intended as a method of creating shade to help tone down the superbright Daeylight of the Aether. So in fact, you're gathering Gloomwood for use in the Aether it's just there also happen to be applications for it within the Nether as well.

In my case though, it's for the best. I tend to steamroll people like nath with my takes on their ideas. I also am still busy with my own collection of threads that I'm in the middle of updating and I'm just really not behind the basic concept that he's working with, so I'm unlikely to bring anything useful to his project.
In general Grey Acumen has a problem with making suggestions that aren't insanely huge or change every aspect of the game ever.
Of course. Once I get my Minecombat suggestion done, I will have pretty much suggested overarching improvements for every single possible aspect of Minecraft.
Well you know, you didn't have to do that. It's kind of excessive. The big range craft thread was way beyond "one suggestion per thread" but since you were making so many suggestions and it was Collaborating with somebody else I guess it was okay (helps get rid of the hundreds of threads you would make in the future), then you added that "let's improve/change every single block in the entire game" thread and that was kind of grossly overinflated and a lot of the ideas revolved too much around the game working around the idea rather than the idea working into the game.
I'm really amazed that no one has commented on the Volcano mechanics yet. I'd have thought people would be all over that, but I guess the block and mob updates are getting passed up in favor of focusing on the new blocks and mobs.

First of all, I didn't see that post from Sabata until after I posted, and yes, I did read through it all. I see the point being made and i do agree with it now.
On the subject of the grimwood shards, Do they have to be placed in tilled soul sand and ONLY tilled soul sand? That really limits what you can do with them. On the same note, what makes them so special as to function as a red stone device? If you could craft them with red stone and THEN they act as toggled darkness and cold sources, then maybe it would make better sense.
Furthermore, a Jack O' Lantern? Why would that even work? Because it's a pumpkin and it's spooky so "boo! Halloween!". At least with my suggestion of the torch idea, the blue fire would give it a much more surreal look.
As for the Blood Diamonds, or rather, your idea of the nether in general, what exactly what do you want the nether to be? Do you want to make it it's own world with it's own sense of rules, or just keep it as a mode of getting between point A to point B via the portals? If it's the latter, why bother with the extensive updates? Why can't it be like another world? Have it's own rules and the like? I like the idea of a duality between the normal world and a dark, twisted world.
To that end, I also disagree with the whole "infection" mechanic, where stone becomes nether rack and such. It would seem like a pain since no one would be able to build fortresses in the nether with cobblestone. It would just end up turning into netherrack.
Other then that, It's a good list of changes that would greatly improve a rather dull area of the game.

Definitely the former.
If it were the latter, you wouldn't need ANYTHING besides "lol open flatlant".
The concept behind this New Nether is to make it distinct and it's own world. Not a one dimensional A to B plane, and not a recolor of what we already have.
*edit
That's not to say the A to B is going to be removed. Just the whole "Faster but HARDER" is going to be emphasized a lot more.

One of the main reasons why corruption was kept was BECAUSE we didn't want people building fortresses of cobblestone in the Nether.
Simply making a Ghast Bomb blow up Cobble is a faster way to address the problem, but corruption feels far more evil than just "our bombs hit harder now"

First of all, I didn't see that post from Sabata until after I posted, and yes, I did read through it all. I see the point being made and i do agree with it now.
When I was telling you to read, I was referring to the stuff on GLOOMshards that were all already in the Opening Post.
Yes they do need to be placed on tilled Soul Sand (maybe they can be placed on Soul Sand, but will have no chance of growing unless the Soul Sand is first tilled, no matter how much Bonemeal you use on it) This is specifically to make it require more work to get the Gloomshard's redstone activated, because lets face it, that's freaking useful, but it also ensures that Gloomwood takes work to grow and harvest, which is an unnatural activity in the Nether, and it also makes sure that all Gloomwood trees will grow above or below a soul sand block so the first couple Gloomwood blocks can have their shadowcasting suppressed and get their shadows to look more like leaves on a tree.
(of course that brings up the question of why Gloomshards don't have their shadowcasting suppressed, but that could be that tilled Soul Sand doesn't suppress the shadowcasting, while untilled soul sand does, allowing gloomshards to be deactive by default, and then ACTIVATED by redstone.
And no, Redstone torches are just redstone put on the end of sticks and they act as PART of the CIRCUIT providing power, they aren't what gets activated, so it makes no sense to craft redstone with Gloomshards. Gloomshards are what GETS ACTIVATED BY the redstone. If anything, the Gloomshards should replace the redstone part of a redstone torch recipe, not the stick part, but I found that pointless and cut the middleman; Gloomshards have a dual purpose as both sticks and saplings, so because they can already be placed, there's no reason to craft them again to make another placeable item that does the same thing.
Furthermore, a Jack O' Lantern? Why would that even work? Because it's a pumpkin and it's spooky so "boo! Halloween!".
Yeah, pretty much.
At least with my suggestion of the torch idea, the blue fire would give it a much more surreal look.
and also make no sense, seeing how Gloomwood produces SHADOWS. blue light is still light.
As for the Blood Diamonds, or rather, your idea of the nether in general, what exactly what do you want the nether to be? I have no idea what point you're trying to make here. The Nether already has its own set of rules in that Water can't be placed and Lava and Light have increased range, and the entire area is covered in nothing but Netherrack and Soul Sand and Zombie Pigmen only have Gold Tools. The Blight and Corruption that Sabata and I proposed just follow that all to its logical endgame.(where did the Zombie pigmen get the gold from, anyway? Answer: Midas Tears)
To that end, I also disagree with the whole "infection" mechanic, where stone becomes nether rack and such. It would seem like a pain since no one would be able to build fortresses in the nether with cobblestone. It would just end up turning into netherrack.
Sure you could, you just need to make sure to put a layer of Mossy Cobblestone along whatever is actively touching Netherrack. Cobblestone and Smoothstone aren't corrupted just by being IN the Nether, they also have to be directly adjacent to another Netherrack block. Otherwise they won't be corrupted at all.
Other then that, It's a good list of changes that would greatly improve a rather dull area of the game.
Well, okay then, thanks.

All Connour ever proposed was "block that makes things darker" I'm the one who conceptualized the block being "WOOD" as well as the freezing effects to supplement the shadows, and also came up with the Freezer (that uses the same concept as it appears in this thread) that Zurich bastardized to using the Gloomwood as the material for building the freezer from and require being powered by some goofy gem (despite the fact that Gloomwood already freezes things on its own without any power source at all, and is "wooden" and thus a perfect candidate for use as fuel)

It does the same damage as diamond, and it has better than iron durabilty in the Nether. Netherraze Hoes are useless on overworld blocks, but it is the ONLY tool that can till Soul Sand to allow growing Gloomwood trees

Erm.. you're welcome?
Anyway, the raze tools do diamond damage, have iron durability, etc. but
I would rather just use a diamond axe than a raze one. Why would you bother wasting
precious raze ingots on something that's good for nothing?
Breaks all wooden blocks instantly, but gets no drops from wood planks. Log blocks and Workbench drop Charcoal, Chest drops 2 Charcoal. Gloomwood drops 3 Gloomshards.
So.. I guess it's an axe that doesn't take double damage from cutting down the
occasional Gloom Tree?
Those trees don't have that much health right?
So instead of wasting my ingots on an axe, I could just mine with my fist...
And just a question;
What's the point of putting it in tilled soul sand? It makes darkness, but what's the point of that?
Maybe you could have an increased number of mobs spawn in the "darkness shroud" thingy,
more than in regular darkness, so you can make mob factories or mob-based player traps more easily.
I guess the idea you had about "planting" gloom shards was for one to use bonemeal to create
some kind of gloom tree farm, to make raze tools with. I guess that's viable.
I have to admit I really like your lava eruption idea, and the combustion element.
And the Fright bulbs.
But the gluttons are just a little bit ridiculous. =/
And the Grems, I mean, they eat fire, but you should color them red :biggrin.gif:
That's all for now..

The grimwood items in the previous thread have no purpose outside of being "lol Grimwood Tier!" There's no proposed purpose for them.
And as I said in like... the 4th post of this thread, nearly ALL of the ideas in this thread were cannibalized from other threads.
I was on the side of having a Freezer block myself, BUT, outside the GUI problem, it would be far FAR easier to code that the Furnace do the same job with Gloomwood in it's "Fuel" slot. Not to mention it wouldn't take up a block ID.
As for the Brands, their original name simply didn't suit being in with the rest of them. Brand was chosen because it will actively set itself ablaze and, while burning hot, rush by and brand the player (think like cattle). A LOT of it's abilities were carried over from the original concept. We just changed the name.

So...I'd like to see "(credited to DarkDX)" or something. If you don't want to be called "thief"...
Otherwise, the idea is great - but I still like the first one. Dunno why.
Grey is the one who background checks everything, and this was actually something he threw in last minute so it's up to him to say "Yeah, that's an earlier iteration of the idea. Go ahead and credit him."
If he says so, I have no problem crediting you in the OP.
Just I've seen TONS of Nether Compass suggestions on these forums and I wouldn't know where to begin for fact checking.
It's probably because it's closer to the Overworld that you enjoy Zurich's thread a bit more. It's what you know and love about the Overworld, but expanded into the Nether... WITH GLOWWY MUSHROOMS!
This thread is trying desperately NOT to do that, so that the Nether is a realm of it's own instead of an "expansion pack".
Nice ideas, but no. I much prefer the other thread. Two suggestion I would make are to change the look of glowsand and to possibly change the Mushrave colours (and I prefer the name nethershroom).
Nice ideas, but no. I much prefer the other thread. Two suggestion I would make are to change the look of glowsand and to possibly change the Mushrave colours (and I prefer the name nethershroom).
Can't change the Mushroom's colors because then it wouldn't be based off the Light Spectrum Wheel.
Also, this is funny. Grey I think we've started a divide between people who want the Nether to be more like the Overworld, and people who want the Nether to be something of it's own.
I suppose coloured gel would be alright... But I think I just prefer the ideas spread around by the other topic, especially the various ores available. Sorry!
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
Darn, I was going to ask if I could help to. And I disagree, when you have a partner to throw ideas off, what once seemed like a good idea, isn't always. And the partner could give good ideas back.

Thats whats going through my mind right now.
While I agree that this may make the nether more lively, as someone said, this is all just too interesting to pass up.
I would think a good balance could be accomplished by having everything be fairly uncommon.
I would love to see this in action.
Dude you could help, I'm saying when you partner up sometimes you have two ideas that go against each other and the (usually) one if left in the dust
And anyways I was about to ask you how a certain sister thread was doing >.>
I will be using them soon
I'm Starting to be known as a Balancer, A.K.A. I'm starting to become pessimist
Mining is the grind, the nether is a place where you have to fight to survive.
Come on man, READ.
and that wasn't even mentioning Mushraves or the Rave Gel. You just can't place FIRE-based lighting around Grimwood.
How did you know abotu Gloomwood shards, while managing to skip over the entire description of their function?

I knew I saw you somewhere else. :tongue.gif:
Well you know, you didn't have to do that. It's kind of excessive. The big range craft thread was way beyond "one suggestion per thread" but since you were making so many suggestions and it was Collaborating with somebody else I guess it was okay (helps get rid of the hundreds of threads you would make in the future), then you added that "let's improve/change every single block in the entire game" thread and that was kind of grossly overinflated and a lot of the ideas revolved too much around the game working around the idea rather than the idea working into the game.
Simply making a Ghast Bomb blow up Cobble is a faster way to address the problem, but corruption feels far more evil than just "our bombs hit harder now"
the nethershrooms, and the tools are all completely new and awesome, and I'm pretty sure
you just stole the freezer idea (and the 'Gloomwood') from him...
EDIT: Actually,
Not sure if that means Grey can basically copy that idea, but whatever. I guess in this thread they make "shards,"
instead of useful planks and sticks.
Also, I feel like some of the mobs you have in this thread don't go with the Nether at all.
The Raze tools you have look pretty useless except for the pickaxe dropping ingots and
the sword setting things on fire.
...I can't make a good point...
Yeah, pretty much.
and also make no sense, seeing how Gloomwood produces SHADOWS. blue light is still light.
Well, okay then, thanks.
LOL. That's hilarious.
I'm guessing that you didn't actually follow the link to check out the original idea.
Some mobs weren't originally intended for the Nether, but I think they fit there perfectly.
It does the same damage as diamond, and it has better than iron durabilty in the Nether. In the Overworld, it is effectively an iron tool that does diamond damage and has a chance to set mobs on fire, and pre-smelts anything it mines. Netherraze Hoes are useless on overworld blocks, but it is the ONLY tool that can till Soul Sand to allow growing Gloomwood trees
[/quote]It's okay, you gave me a chance to make my points.

I personally like the Nether Update thread idea better, sans the unoriginal mob ideas and unintelligent posters. Good try, but I like the idea of a freezer block and the grimwood items. =/
GENERATION 17: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.
There already is a nether update thread, that's what the link takes you to.
However, after actually reading the OP, I now see that it's basically a highly improved version of the previous thread.
I hereby support this one more.
Erm.. you're welcome?
Anyway, the raze tools do diamond damage, have iron durability, etc. but
I would rather just use a diamond axe than a raze one. Why would you bother wasting
precious raze ingots on something that's good for nothing?
So.. I guess it's an axe that doesn't take double damage from cutting down the
occasional Gloom Tree?
Those trees don't have that much health right?
So instead of wasting my ingots on an axe, I could just mine with my fist...
And just a question;
Hahahaha, that's adorable. He thinks he can mine Gloomwood with his fist.
If I had an image, I'd make a Sig tag for you to replace the one that you have.
But no one has made us an image yet.
Can't change the Mushroom's colors because then it wouldn't be based off the Light Spectrum Wheel.
Also, this is funny. Grey I think we've started a divide between people who want the Nether to be more like the Overworld, and people who want the Nether to be something of it's own.
