A ranged weapon that does high damage with its ranged attack, and minor damage (about that of a wood sword) with melee. Goes back to you and is caught automatically.
It can get stuck on blocks, much like a trident, or on mobs, and creates a similar entity.
Boomerangs share the Loyalty enchantment with tridents but otherwise have no special enchantments. Loyalty makes them come back if they get stuck, and makes ones that are not stuck come back faster when they don't hit anything, which may be a pro or a con situationally.
Adds from Jancrash:
It could be interesting to give the boomerang a short charging period before it is thrown and double or give it some kind of armor penetration, then allow it to hit multiple enemies on the trip. Maybe even the same one twice if invincibility frames end before it returns. Then it still wouldn't deal as much raw damage as a fully-charged arrow, but it would work better against groups of enemies. Then you could possibly even give it Sharpness/Power and possibly Flame. That sounds like a pretty unique crowd weapon.

So it's a ranged weapon that does more damage to the player than the enemy? No thanks.

Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)

Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
No thank you. The way this is explained it sounds like it is worse than other ranged weapons in almost every way. The only thing it benefits from is being able to return without needing an enchantment (although that seems unreliable enough that you gave it Loyalty to make it happen more), and even then you need to be keeping an eye on it to right click at exactly the right time.

Okay, sure, let's say you catch it automatically, and it can't hurt you? What do you think then?
I think it's also worth mentioning that the boomerang would not fly in a straight line like a trident but in a circle left or right depending on which hand you throw with or the direction you aim at when clicking to throw, and with loyalty it would simply skate around blocks in its way until it reaches you.

It still doesn't sound that good, even if there was auto-catch and no self-risk on usage. If I try throwing a weapon that requires this much skill to aim and use effectively, it shouldn't do two hearts of damage. A fully-charged bow currently does nine damage, so there would be no reason to use the boomerang.

I like your ideas and will add them, but by default the boomerang should be strong even without charging it up (which I guess would be done by right-clicking and then left-click to throw/release right-click to throw).
I think you are all misunderstanding. It does severe damage when thrown. It does minimal damage when meleed with. You don't melee with bows, do you?
There was nothing in the OP that mentioned damage aside from comparing it to a wooden sword. Based on how it was worded, I assumed you were saying it did as much damage as a wooden sword's melee attack.

Sure, can I also add on your ideas?
Also - a crafting recipe - I was originally thinking of just wood but that doesn't justify a strong attack now that I think about it - maybe adorn it in iron and gold nuggets?

Go ahead. For a recipe, maybe add in leather to make it feel like a holder? Minecraft isn't entirely realistic in its items' recipes (I sincerely doubt a turtle helmet would work that way and leather is tougher than the game gives it credit for), so it should be fitting as a grip. And since not just any wood can be used for a boomerang (it has to have the right graining), maybe instead of wooden planks, they could take logs. Maybe even the newly-craftable all-side logs.
I can't find the recipe image website, but imagine something like this:
leather .| log .| log
blank .|blank .| log
blank .|blank .| leather
There would be no point in using it since we have tridents which are similar, and we have bows.
Hence why I suggested making boomerangs able to hit anything that crosses its path during a throw, including the same target multiple times after invincibility frames end. Then bows and tridents would be powerful against single targets whereas splash potions and boomerangs would be more useful when facing groups of enemies.
It could be interesting to give the boomerang a short charging period before it is thrown and double or give it some kind of armor penetration, then allow it to hit multiple enemies on the trip. Another thing I forgot to add is that Mojang is probably never gonna add boomerangs since it doesn't fit Minecraft. And if you want boomerangs there's probably a mod out there that adds them.
I never thought Tridents could fit due to being too specific, yet they're in it now.

Boomerangs fit much better than most weapons I can think of and their attack style combined with Jan's suggestions make them unique compared to tridents. Spears would be nice but are basically just weak tridents, so I thought of another nature-y weapon that fits Minecraft's ground-up style.
This just sounds unnecessary and possibly overpowered. A weapon that does slightly-decent damage close-up and a lot of damage from afar? It effectively renders bows/tridents unnecessary.
It just sounds redundant.

This seems better now than it originally did but Writr brings up a good point about the potential strength. I would say it should do something like half (maybe 2/3) of the damage of a fully charged arrow in the first hit of a throw and then set damage (maybe 3-4) for each additional mob it hits. But it should also lose durability for each mob it hits, and maybe 2 durability if it hits an object and becomes stuck?

You make them like arrows but with logs instead of sticks, they have low durability and low attack damage, and can only receive Loyalty and Impaling enchantments from the trident-based ones, but they're cheaper and act the same to help you practice until you get the real deal.
