Wouldn't it be cool, if minecraft Java and Bedrock came together as just "Minecraft", no bedrock or java. Same versions. Mojang could delay Java's updates until Bedrock is up to date with Java. Joining Java and Bedrock together would cause Mojang less hassle. I just wanted to put this out there, cause I just came back to minecraft after 2 years and I'm just annoyed by this. I want to play with my friends from java but I can't, I haven't got enough money for a decent pc.
I agree, it'd be nice for there to not be any differences to cause confusion, and so things that you can do in one version aren't completely absent in another.

I don't think this would technically work. Phones and the Switch for instance would likely not cope well with java engine. On the other hand, if we brought bedrock over, a lot of the popular stuff reliant on java: mods, plugins, shaders, would break the whole thing would have to be begun from scratch. Plus, the communities are kinda different: java is more technical and its servers tend to have more experienced and hardcore players, whereas bedrock has a more casual and less experienced audience, and its servers tend to have less experienced people. Plus the experienced/casual contrast has other visibilites in minecraft: attack cooldowns, armour mechanics, controllers, modpacks, redstone, performance, etc.
I do think it would be nice for java and bedrock to be united, but I don't think it's a realistic possibility, at least not anytime soon.
I see your argument with the differences between PC and console capabilities, that would certainly effect their compatibility. But, how does the casual or hardcore playing of their communities effect this? And the differences in content? I'm genuinely asking in case I'm missing something.

Take for instance something as small as quasi-connectivity in pistons. Tons of Java redstoners manipulate it to create complex redstone contraptions. Bedrock lacks this feature. If Java changes to the Bedrock engine, many things currently possible that use this mechanic will become impossible. If Bedrock is changed to use Java, suddenly the casual players will have to learn so much more just to keep up with the baseline of the Java community.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
I see your concern, and I think Bedrock should then change towards Java's ability, maybe with some differences to compensate. I wouldn't worry about casual players having to learn too much as the differences don't seem too drastic.
