I would like a new update for villagers to come, a warrior class villager which helps fight off the pillagers
but when you enlist warrior villagers then the pillager attacks should be made harder and come in more waves, in my opinion
so the battle against them isn't made too easy as a result.
Me and friends have been wanting warrior villagers for some time, or at least 1 other friend I know for a fact does.
We already have clerics and farmer villagers, how about warriors who can actually fight back and defend against hostile mobs?
and I am not talking about iron golems, who have terrible AI, are slow and also don't last very long against monsters, not to mention they are expensive to make if villagers aren't spawning them.
There is something for everyone in an update suggestion like this I believe.
A warrior class villager who you can enlist would allow players to build a fictional empire in the game and also add new dramatics of war.
While the pillagers shouldn't be allowed to destroy builds or steal chest items, they should be made tougher and require advancements to villages be made to effectively defend against them.
Also the newer warrior class villagers should offer trades like different kinds of flags, and take over the role of providing tradeable armor and battle equipment to players using emeralds, diamonds and gold ingots as currency.
Their breeding mechanics ought to be the same as the other villagers, throw bread at them in a location counted as a village and they reproduce.
Becoming the newer warriors when they reach adulthood.
If the player loses a fight with the pillagers however, then their dropped inventory items should then be stolen by the pillagers.
Forcing players to be extra careful about fighting them. There is a consequence for dying in a fight against them, but it isn't also made too annoying for people who spent a lot of time stashing important loot away in various chests across the map.
Right away I know the initial posts are going to be people looking at the title and replying with "villagers are peaceful lol no support", without actually reading the post. Yes, the criticism that villagers are meant to be peaceful is valid, both because Iron Golems already exist, and because Villagers are meant to be interpreted as purely peaceful mobs as has been stated by Mojang multiple times. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, perhaps we can move on to actually reviewing the content of the post.

Well for one, I agree that iron golems are ineffective but I think the solution is to make iron golems more powerful or to have some kind of secondary ranged golem. I also think that having lots of villagers with weapons would allow villagers to overwhelm their invaders, which I don't think is how the current setup is supposed to work. I think players are supposed to assist villagers during raids since they tend to be in villages any time that one happens.

As much as I'd love to build a big multi-city empire and wage war against Pillagers in the reason, I think this extends beyond the scope of Minecraft. I also think this doesn't make a lot of sense because building an empire requires that you have authority over civilians, whereas this would be more like having control over a militia.
Also, seeing as you DMed me a link to this post, I think it's only relevant that I link my own post that proposes another interesting solution to this problem, though in the form of a mod suggestion: the Posse mod. (Granted, it's more oriented towards getting together a "family" or "gang" as opposed to a larger army, but to be fair Minecraft tends to lag with large numbers of entities.)
Also the newer warrior class villagers should offer trades like different kinds of flags, and take over the role of providing tradeable armor and battle equipment to players using emeralds, diamonds and gold ingots as currency.
I don't like the idea of alternate currencies, and I don't like the idea of taking armor and weapon trades away from blacksmith and armorer villagers. The flags sound interesting, though I'm not sure they'd really be different from banners. (Maybe they could trade banner patterns that represent certain shapes?)

In all fairness, I think Villager breeding is far too complicated and it never seems to happen in any situation outside of a player-built breeder, though I think this is a bit too simplistic.

I guess I don't really have a problem with this since it essentially just means that death by Pillager is just as dangerous as death by Lava or death by Void.
I can't support a Warrior villager suggestion for the main reason I listed above (that villagers are pacifist mobs) but I think even putting that aside, I don't know that this is a great way to implement Warrior villagers. You also didn't really mention how powerful these warrior villagers would be against mobs and other players, which would be very important if I'm trying to determine how balanced the suggestion is.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
This is an interesting idea that I've heard floating around. I think they patrol the village and then occasionally stop at their guard post (whatever that would look like) which would work as their job site.
The problem I see is their pathfinding. If I put their post at the top of a watchtower, it'd require a pretty big stairway. And that's if they have range attacks, which I would assume they would as they're likely to face skeletons and pillagers.

I'd rather let Mojang figure this out, how powerful the warrior villagers ought to be if such an idea from the community were to be implemented, not saying I know everything, none of us do, but this would be something worth thinking about.
and yeah about the lava and void thing, you're correct on this. That's where I am coming from with this one, if players choose not to stash away things they didn't want to be lost in chests then there is already a risk of losing them if they enter a situation where those items could be destroyed or lost forever. Having pillagers steal dropped inventory items after a player dies, I can get behind this idea and I wouldn't have a problem with it, it would suck, but that's the price to be paid for failure and it would make survival harder without making it unfair, and it would not ruin the core mechanics of the game.
This is also a failure players could learn from to get better at the game.
it was the same story for people who died in the nether by lava whilst mining, be extra careful and after seeing lava pour out from a wall it is wise to run away as fast as possible. If a pillager fight becomes too dicey, then your only option left is to run away, sometimes to survive you have to run.
also if you lose items in the ocean if you die in a fight against sea guardians, or by drowning, for example, there is a chance you're going to lose everything there also. Not because the items get instantly deleted, but over time when the player fails to recover their dropped items before the count down finishes, water slows you down, after all, even more so if you don't have depth strider on.
and the purpose of chests was so players could prevent their most prized possessions from being lost, your rarest items ought to be stored in the ender chest, obviously, and chests also exist to store items that cannot be fit in our inventory. Having griefers loot them is one thing, that can be prevented by playing in solo or whitelisted servers with people you trust. But if AI were to do it, it's not that simple and people shouldn't have to play on peaceful difficulty just to avoid nonsense like that.

I don't care how old and overused my argument is, I'm gonna say it anyway. We have the Iron Golem. It would be stupid for the effort to be put into an original mob like said golem, and then go back and go "okay! let's add a fighting villager now!" Villagers = meant to be peaceful. I know post #2 already brought this up, but it's getting said anyway.

This is starting to sound like an upgraded version of a wolf.

No, this is starting to sound very clichéd. Why are diamonds and gold ingots now doing what emeralds are meant to do..?
Their breeding mechanics ought to be the same as the other villagers, throw bread at them in a location counted as a village and they reproduce.
Becoming the newer warriors when they reach adulthood.
I can't complain about the breeding mechanics, but this is slowly sounding like an Age of Empires game. Minecraft isn't really about this (or at least not in with these kind of 'warrior" mobs). This is also sounding like there's gonna be some serious balance issues - being able to keep making new warrior villagers following you around.
If the player loses a fight with the pillagers however, then their dropped inventory items should then be stolen by the pillagers.
Forcing players to be extra careful about fighting them. There is a consequence for dying in a fight against them, but it isn't also made too annoying for people who spent a lot of time stashing important loot away in various chests across the map.
......???
Why would anyone want this..? I'll give some sliver of credit in that it makes sense, it's something a pillager would do in a logical sense, but in a gameplay sense, why does it need to be there? The reason of "it makes players more careful" doesn't make anyone want this. I wouldn't call this a "terrible idea", but this will land much better if this was something more original and not another "let's add a fighting villager" idea that everyone here seems to hate. Villagers were made pacifists for a reason.
This is something that might work, but not in this exact form. If the issue is villagers getting attacked too easy, why not just buff the iron golem first?

Buff the iron golems in what way? how would this be done without making the game too easy? you already asserted a warrior class villager would introduce some "balancing issues" but then you go onto ask me the question why not buff the iron golems?
They already give players an unlimited supply of iron when killed, and allow this even in mob farms evidently when the mechanics are used appropriately. In that sense they're already buffing you by supplying you materials for the 2nd best armour in the game. If they were to receive a buff which made them faster, smarter and more durable, what do you think this would introduce to the game then? please take that into consideration.
This suggestion would give players far more of an advantage, than introducing warrior villagers whom you'd have to earn the respect of first, similar to how you already have to earn the trust of wolves before they become your guardians against the skeletons.
How would you address this new balancing issue with the game? remove the ability of iron golems to drop iron so players would have to mine their iron or find iron equipment in chests or off drops from pillagers in raids? people who construct iron golem farms wouldn't be happy about this and they would be pretty upset if their factories stopped working that they put a lot of time putting together.

You want villagers to be more protected right? That's what Iron Golems already provide. They're helpful, but they don't follow you. Your warriors do however.

You don't need to explain the fundamentals of the game's balance to me. What is your most important goal here? Do you want another follower mob? Villagers to be better protected? Or both?

Doesn't this prove my point of your warrior villagers just being an upgrade of wolves?

I'm sorry but that is just awful reasoning. "People are gonna be upset with this" doesn't work as a good reason if something unbalanced was fixed (which I mean generally, not just golems). Who said anything about Iron Golem drops? Before I continue, I need to know, do you plan villages having both Iron Golems and warriors protecting everything? We're talking about an idea that's been rejected for over 8 years.

It's only "awful" reasoning to you because you haven't taken the time to think it through, games are not supposed to be your unpaid job, they're supposed to be fun, not annoying, if a game becomes too stressful for people then there's no point to its existence, period. There's a point to be made about balancing gameplay yes, but these things have to be carefully done.
and about the warrior villagers thing, how do I plan to have them protect villages, I'd rather let Mojang figure all this out if such an idea were to get implemented in the future. 5 years ago we never thought we'd have pillagers in the game, but now we have them.
Players can bring friends to help them out against the raids, but what about if somebody chooses to play the game in solo? the iron golems that randomly spawn in the presence of a village wouldn't be enough to assist you, they're not fast enough for a start, meaning you have to fight the ravagers and what not yourself, and without armour it is very risky.

Uuugh, please don't lecture me on game design. I'm a game designer myself and I don't need any advice. I don't need a "you didn't think it through" line either because you're suggesting what's been rejected for a long time.

Congrats, you just used an invalid defense point. This is why the suggestions guide should have stayed to the old version and not the current lackluster version. The "I'll just let Mojang work that out!" is an absolute nope. We called that the "trust in big brother =D" excuse. Mojang doesn't come here to read suggestions, so it's up to YOU to work out the balance.

The questions in my post weren't rhetorical and you dodged them. There's a lot of points I brought up that you skipped over. This part is subjective, but I can't for the life of me picture a villager not looking stupid while holding a weapon. It's been a LONG time since villagers were added, and it's very clear that they are meant to be cross-armed pacifists, and it works out perfectly.
I'm not against something that protects villagers better, just not some clichéd warrior.

Pillagers on the other hand haven't existed for a long time and are already a variant of the warrior class villager suggestion, except they hurt you and villagers, not the other way around. For somebody who claims to be a "video game designer" you sure didn't seem to grasp this point being made.
Edit, I'm not a game designer myself, but I can see the problems (logically) with people rejecting warrior class villagers simply because we have iron golems when many of us have the option (but not all, not everyone wants to play or has the time to play video games) to bring in friends on survival servers to make the fictional war cult thing you're shooting down.
I'll end it here, this conversation is clearly getting nowhere.
I'd rather let Mojang figure this out, how powerful the warrior villagers ought to be if such an idea from the community were to be implemented, not saying I know everything, none of us do, but this would be something worth thinking about.
Just so you are aware, there is a Mojang site which lists ideas for Minecraft that Mojang will no longer consider adding to Minecraft. The idea of a combative or defensive villager is something that is listed on that site:
Villagers are pacifists. They don't want to fight. This is why golems exist. (Let's improve golems!) Villagers do not want to be guards, knights, soldiers, fighters, defenders, warriors, or protectors.
I'll end it here, this conversation is clearly getting nowhere.
Nobody said your suggestion was absolutely pointless, it just wouldn't work in the exact form of a villager holding a weapon. If the mob was something different, it'd probably work out perfectly
I think it was suggested, maybe even somewhere buried in here, that dogs could have a "guard" option. When told to guard, they could wander around within a certain range, maybe roughly 35 to 40 blocks around the spot they were when told to guard.

At least this forum isn't as bad as Twitter.
Just so you are aware, there is a Mojang site which lists ideas for Minecraft that Mojang will no longer consider adding to Minecraft. The idea of a combative or defensive villager is something that is listed on that site:

Nobody said your suggestion was absolutely pointless, it just wouldn't work in the exact form of a villager holding a weapon. If the mob was something different, it'd probably work out perfectly
I think it was suggested, maybe even somewhere buried in here, that dogs could have a "guard" option. When told to guard, they could wander around within a certain range, maybe roughly 35 to 40 blocks around the spot they were when told to guard.
