Each index will have an X(4 bit(0=15)), Z(4 bit(0-15)), and Y(8 bit(0~127)) or... 2 bytes for the address.
Each index will also have 8 on-off switches for each individual eighth block represented in the whole structure. As an example: 1,2,3,4,5,6 on and 7,8 off would create stairs. Since on and off can be represented by 1 and 0 respectively, it makes sense to store this as bits, 8 bits = 1 byte.
Finally, the index will contain the texture of the block; what will the block look like? Since there is a maximum possible 256 combinations, we can safely assume this to be an 8 bit number. Again, 1 byte.
This all seems fine and all, and works well inn smale scale, but when you start using this for larger projects I belive that this code will result inn huge preformance issues / game crash?
I support this Idea, anyone who saids this is a mod, not suggestion, look at pistons. They were first mods, now they are in game. Suggesting a mod to be in the game is not against the rules. Please add this ^^

"If its a mod its possible to be a feature"
I really like this idea, it fulfills both parts of a suggestion I made the other day, although in a better, way I had intended, with a greater potential for creativity. Too bad the mod hasn't been updated for so long.
I spent more than 4 hours reading all 42 pages of this thread. It's that awesome to me. It was cool to see what started out as an idea developed over the months. I wholeheartedly support this and wonder why Notch hadn't added this into the game yet. I also wonder why people think that adding this will ruin the game...

Optifine is awesome!
Now, when can Notch start using 3D instead of linear chunks for minecraft? It would massively improve performance, and increase height limits by hundreds of times. There are mods out there that do that already.
I suggest making the hammer out of gold/iron/diamond blocks instead, and ditching the lower tired hammers.
Kinda seems nice to have this option available later in the world, as opposed to right from the start.

As I'm sure many have requested, I would love to have a world made entirely of eighth blocks. Blocks that work as tools(chests, crafting benches, enchanting tables, furnaces, ect.) would not be made smaller, but everything else would, including water/lava. I've known about this mod for about 6 months now, I was just waiting for a few additions, and the hope of whole 8th blocks worlds, before using it.
It has always bothered me that a person would have to jump to do almost anything in Minecraft.
As fun as it is to create things on minecraft, only large structures have enough room for you to express yourself, but with 8th blocks you can bring detail into your small home as well! Brilliant idea, so many possibilities!
AHAHA, I love it too!

A shame this mod seems abandoned.

Overgrowth indie game FTW!
