So ever since dyes were implemented, I've been hording flowers, particularly red ones (the yellow ones look like weeds >_>) and in a lot of maps, there are few red flowers, split widely apart. So I had an idea.
What if whenever you planted a flower yourself, that flower spawned three other flowers of the same color within a 4 block range of it? The process would take a minimum of 2 minecraft days and a maximum of 4 minecraft days. This way you can easily collect dye without traveling miles and cleansing your land of supplies. Perhaps even mushrooms could have a system like this, just it only spawns 2 others in 6 days.
Some might say that this is overpowered, and those people must be idiots, because how can gathering dye be overpowered? It has no use in survival and is purely aesthetic.
As a side idea, maybe there could be a 1/100 chance that a flower could spawn a blue flower. The blue flower, however, cannot spawn any flowers near it, and will act as a blue dye, to make up for the scarcity of Lapis Lazuli.
Thoughts? Ideas? Leave it here.

there has never been a lac of red/yellow dye and there never will be so long as you explore just a little bit more than you currently do. Its lapis thats rare and even then not that much and even then thats how its meant to be. you can't spend all your time in doors for EVERYTHING.
I would prefer if the said blue flower dropped a more lush blue color, rather than have a mineral ore form from the flower (neon blue and aquamarine) and I wouldn't mind growing flowers, and digging for lapis is fine as it is, since at least one of the dyes has to be rare (a bit).

List of things that you can do in doors that you could normally do outside:
- Farm
That's about all I got.
And yes, there is a very small population of red flowers in my map, which is why this would be useful. And like I've said before: DYE HAS NO SURVIVAL BENIFIT! Maybe if I said you could plant a diamond tree on the surface than your comment would apply.

I guess you're right, it should drop a slightly different color, maybe it could be a natural source of light blue dye, rather than combining lapis with bone meal.

Anything that serves as a source for dye or food should be farmable, especially things like flowers/mushrooms. Yes, that means I support apple trees and an alternative source of blue dye, but that's for another topic.
The way I see the flower mechanics working (which is just expanding your concept):If a flower is planted on a grass (not just dirt), additional flowers will spawn near it over time, with a cap of maybe 10 or so, again only on grass blocks.
This way, we can still farm flowers relatively easily, but it isn't effortless. Plus, whenever you come across a flower patch, you can harvest all but one flower, and it'll restore the patch in time. Respect your ecosystem!

Yeah that's exactly what I said just it was 3 other flowers. Also I think you should have to pick and replant the flowers to be able to make them fertile, so you actually have to do that before your patch regrows, also that way it's easier to make a garden, if you're not using the for dye.

bone meal
Yet another massive year and a half long necro-bump. Come on, really? Why is this even allowed?
Yup...Bonemeal on grass makes flowers and tall grass...find a skeleton spawner and make a spawn trap...Inf bones, Inf arrows. Your set. Or just find them yourself considering bones are not all that hard to come by,

They're allowed?
Didn't think so...
Anyway, yeah. Grass + Bone Meal = infinite flowers + infinite tall grass = infinite red/yellow/orange dye + already infinite seeds :/
No support due to redundancy.
