My brother and I were discussing about the 5 year hardcore minecrafter who died and how it was kind of stupid to lose all that effort over one death. I can imagine a lot of accidental deaths, my fear is usually death by creeper that spawns right behind me.
So we were talking about how it would be cool if you were playing a realm server on hardcore. What if when you died your body was ragdolled permanently on the place of death with all your items still inside your body. Someone else would have to craft some kind of crystal heart (revival item), come back to your body and revive you by throwing the item on the ragdolled body.
I'm not very sure about the situations though, like if the body had fallen into the lava. Maybe a skeleton can be used as a body dummy when falling in but you lose all your stuff due to lava? I don't know. Honestly in normal, it bugs me that death just means you come back from the bed.
I think if we're trying to come up with better alternatives than perma-death on hardcore mode, a good alternative I would like to see is that just like in regular survival, the player respawns, but instead of respawning at the bed, the player respawns in a completely random spot in the same world. This way, even though it's unlikely, the player still has a chance to happen upon his old builds. The player would essentially still lose everything, but there's new opportunity for re-discovery. In addition, the perma-death tweak would encourage a person to explore because the larger their initial network is, the high the likelihood that they find their old build in it.
That only works if you expect to take damage. As an exclusively hardcore mode player, I can say that most of my deaths are from silly mistakes, not from a situation where a totem would have been able to be equipped fast enough. So no, you couldn't just use a totem of undying.
isn't the whole point of playing on hardcore the risk of loosing everything and having to start from the beginning if you die?
Agreed. The point of hardcore is to test your skills and see how far you can push your limits in Minecraft. To me, hardcore mode is like a test. It's to test you, how far can you go with certain skills. It's to test your abilities, strengths and weaknesses, so when you die, that's when you know that's where you need to improve. (In most cases) Wether it's being carful, combat, building, mining, etc.
I know and agree about the point of hardcore mode. There would be virtually no difference from what I suggested to the OP and what's currently implemented except that there's a chance that you might happen upon one of your earlier builds later into the game. At that point you probably won't need the stuff from your previous life, but finding the ruins of your previous life is a cool and enticing concept.

And how would this be useful outside of hardcore multiplayer servers?
My suggestions: Enhancements - Throwable Fire Charges - On Phantoms and Elytra. Also check out The Minecraftian Language. This signature is not here to waste your space.

You could just use a totem of undying lol.
