For the longest time, I had thought it would be really cool to be able to set up a tripod with a telescope on it, with it viewing your world around you at great zoomed in distances through a circle eyeglass (or square, because MineCraft).
You could set one of these up atop a lookout tower, and search around for things far away from your location.
Related items could be binoculars, or even implement this into a sniper scope weapon.
Well, it would be nice, BUT! There is big but(t) here.
You would have to load chunks for this to have any reasonable effect. If I put this on top of my towers, which extend to build limit, then I could theoretically see far. Like…1 km far. That is a LOT of chunks.
I like the idea, but I cannot throw my support, because it's currently technically not possible. Yeah, when MC will be trully multithreaded and able to use 16 logical processors at once, to load a LOT of chunks (and then unload them) in some fast way (you better have your save file on M.2 NVMe SSD), then sure, why not. But given the fact, that if I set render distance to 16, my FPS gets rekt… And 16 is only 256 m.
And no, I already taking into acount that you'd need to render the area where you're looking. Only that. Like if there would be another player. But in your FOV would be a lot of chunks.
Let's say all of it is magically solved. What about mobs. Should they spawn there? Like hostile mobs underground. My question is only "why?", there is no reason, since you cannot see them, but that means checking for another thing for all surfaces, which…and your CPU just melted. Do you see my point?
I know I've trashed this idea really bad, so let me just say I like it, but…MC is not ready for it. I cannot even be in my new building, because it's too big, without having 30 FPS and stuters. Yeah, because that's what I was aiming the whole 3 months of building it.
Then how come games like No Mans Sky do it? Where you can keep zooming out. Why not average certain blocks together and save that as 'thumbnail' or 'zoom' information? Would seem like a good optimization I would think.. Basic concept of LoD.

Well what about using something similar to Optifine’s zoom? Basically when you used the telescope, it zooms in and allows you to see anything in already loaded chunks, it would not require chunks to be loaded and unloaded as you looked at them as you can only see what is in your render distance.
In order to achieve OP’s idea for this, when you zoomed in it would force the player into first-person and add a screen effect similar to when a player puts a pumpkin on their head. The only difference being the shape is a ‘circle’ shape (a circle made out of squares, as per Minecraft’s style).
The Telescope could be used in the main hand or off-hand (so you could use a bow or crossbow whilst holding it. The disadvantage is you cant see what is right next to you). You can still move whilst using it but you are slowed down significantly. You can also use it whilst in a boat, minecart, riding an animal or while using an elytra without being slowed down.
You could also have Tripods which function similarly to Armour Stands except they only will accept telescopes. To use the telescope, left click on the tripod. To remove the telecope, left click whilst sneaking.
The main uses of Telescopes are, of course, seeing long distances (assuming you have the chunks loaded in your render distance). However, if they can be used in conjunction with ranged weapons, they would primarily be used to help aim at distant targets, such as other players. Or simply to spy on them from afar. I can also see the mounted version as being used as decoration in libraries, studies, observatories, pirate ships, guard towers or anywhere else that could be a lookout point. They could also be used in Adventure maps or PvP maps quite effectively.
Turoquen: Ask them. MC ≠ No Mans Sky. ← 2 important things to keep in mind.
No blok averaging, please. What if water and dirt will come together?
Liam_Morris_2702: Optifine doesn't generate new chunks. Therefore is limited with it's zooming capability. I only assume that we want to trully see in distance. Like 0,5 km far, without generating billions of chunks.
If OF-like zoom would be implemeneted, sure, it would work, but…I still consider it kind of useless. I haven't build 190 m tall tower to look…into fog.
So basically some scope like for sniper rifle. Sure, I could get behind that.
I've just went one step further in my assumption. I've expected some trully long range options. The ability to look up to 1 km far. Because…that's what's telescopes are for, aren't they? For looking really, really far.
If it would be something using only loaded chunks, then…it's just weak. Sure, why not, but at that point, why not having optifine? You don't need Forge for that, which is good, since it's been half year since new version, and new forge…isn't. I get it, it's hard, but on the other hand…

isterian_imperian Yeah, i get what you’re saying, it wouldn’t be extremely useful unless you had a long render distance. I was just giving an idea as to how it could work. Yeah, at that point you might as well just use optifine if you can. It would be about as useful as optifine’s zoom so take that for what you will. It would be more geared towards the community who do not, or can not, use mods.
Yeah, I can see the chunk loading being a big problem. Makes sense. Too bad, would be cool to have, though it would probably not be used enough for it to be a viable item.

It wouldn't actually merge the blocks for LoD rendering, just for visual. I'm surprised they don't do this already..

Sounds cool, but certainly would initiate a big fat lag-fest!
